This album opened a lane for Kendrick.

Hell yeah!

Anonymous

the first classic review of an album that's not a classic

Anonymous

Rod, you the real MVP.

Anonymous

THERE ARE NO DAMN SKIPPABLE TRACKS ON HERE

Anonymous

Lol y'all talked a lot about the Cool. It feltlike it took away from food & liquor.

Anonymous

LOVE this!!!!!1

re: Rod at 11:58... this was exactly me. I know Food & Liquor is '06 but I stopped fucking with rap for a few years starting in '08. The genre was in a reaaaal bad place lol.

Anonymous

If you're a Hip Hop Head and you think this then you're in a very small minority

Anonymous

Y'all need to talk about the Lupe vs Kendrick shit that's been brewing recently. Thoughts? Who'd win? Who's right? Who's being petty?

Anonymous

Sunshine is the perfect example of making a love hip hop song that is legitimately great and does not come off as corny

Anonymous

The Instrumental forever slaps.

Anonymous

Classic album , classic review !

Anonymous

Should've mentioned the leaked version, nonetheless still a great review.

Anonymous

Easily a classic! Better than the cool?? Idk about that!!

Anonymous

Was feefo in Chicago in 06?

Anonymous

When I heard kick push I literally hated it for years until I heard part 2 then it changed my perception of the song. I gotcha is what made me a lupe stan

Anonymous

Sunshine is my favorite joint off this classic mannn. The instrumental is so beautiful after listening to it it just makes you feel warm. Thank you Lupe

Anonymous

So like now we gotta hear a review of The Cool right?

Anonymous

Great review. First heard Lupe on Madden 07 (The Instrumental) and from there Lupe was my man.

Anonymous

Lupe vs Kendrick next?

Anonymous

It sounds like from the discussion that maybe we need a The Cool classic review as well! Secretly I think T&Y is his best album, although I'm not sure if it can be talked about as a "Classic" because it doesn't seem to have impacted the culture in the same way.

The greatness of Food and Liquor and The Cool got me stanning all these years later. Need The Cool classic album review!

Anonymous

Mike was 100% right about Daydreamin being a classic, always been the track for me

Anonymous

Has to be a classic, bruh was look at as one of the greats from jump after this was released, The Cool just solidified it and even after Lasers people still considered him a great and he'd only released 3 albums. "Top 5 alive and I only got two out"

Anonymous

One of my favorite albums.

To maybe answer why Jay didn't mess with Lupe after. Jay was actually supposed to run Atlantic instead of Def Jam at the time. Jay was cool with Lupe's label manager Chill and hooked them up with the deal at Atlantic where Lupe would be the first artist he looked after. However, he went with Def Jam because of a better offer. Jay kept his word and executive produced this album. Because of the separate label, I believe this is why Jay didn't have time to do it again.

If any album of Lupe's should be reviewed as a classic album, it's Tetsuo and Youth. I understand you guys have already reviewed it and not this album. But Tetsuo and Youth is his best album by far, and a true classic of 2010's hip hop.

Anonymous

I agree that T&Y is his best album, and by a long way. While it may not have impacted the hip hop mainstream in the same way, Lupe has always been a rap loner, and that album is really the pinnacle of his style.

Anonymous

I was hoping you guys would touch on “Hurt Me Soul” - that song alone is 1 reason why it’s a classic! No rapper has done what he did. Quite frankly Lupe was (and is) ahead of his time

Anonymous

This album is a classic because it bridged the divide between the conscious, underground sound, the mainstream sound, and the early '90s jazz-rap sound. Without Food & Liquor, there'd be no To Pimp A Butterfly or other modern conscious classics like it. Just because it's a more recent release, doesn't prevent it from being a classic. If it hadn't been for this album, we'd never have left the bling/ringtone era.

I used to think F&L was better than The Cool too but I can't say that no more lol, but then after seeing you all nominate this on the classic review list I started thinking to myself is this really a classic....now after hearing this album more and more and hearing you all talk about and then thinking about what was coming out at that time, this album is for sure CLASSIC! Thanks for this review yall Lupe is one of my favorite rappers ever and I am glad you all like him too even with Lasers and Drogas Light lol! Great job and review yall been a fan of yall for a while!

Lupe is my favorite rapper. I prefer The Cool & Tetsuo & Youth to Food & Liquor. That being said, it is an awesome project.

2021-07-09 21:07:12 You guys had be going back listening to both albums. I still like The Cool more just because of the feel the album had, and the products, but I will say that F&L has a lot more strong points
