Luckily for you, it’s a beautiful, warm day, and you don’t have to walk far. Normally when you’re walking outside, you take your time about it, savoring the sights around you and generally enjoying being out in the fresh air under your own power. But today is different.

Today you’re determined to get to… wherever… it is that you’re going as quickly as possible. There’s an address in a text message on your phone, and even though you don’t remember receiving the message, you know that you need to get to that place before too much time has passed.

In moments (you really don’t know how long, in fact if pressed you might be willing to swear that you took one step and then were suddenly, magically at your destination) you find yourself on the doorstep of a nondescript house on the outskirts of town, set far back in an isolated lot.

You do not notice the absence of neighbors.

Just as you’re lifting your hand to knock you get another text; this one directs you to an door at the back of the house. Through the door you can see narrow stairs leading down into darkness and hear the murmuring voices of a small group of people. Without hesitation, you begin to walk down the steps.

As you walk, you seem to hear a voice.

(“I know a lot of people are familiar with the idea of, the thought of going down stairs to take someone deeper, and even though I know with you it’s not necessary, because you are already quite deep and going deeper, why don’t we take advantage of these steps anyway.

“So you can find yourself as you descend these steps going easily more deeply into trance. As your foot touches the next tread going that much deeper and perhaps even becoming heavier and harder to pick up your feet as you continue your descent.

And by the time you reach the bottom of this staircase, you can find yourself feeling so wonderful because you are so deeply in trance, and of course the more wonderful you feel the deeper you can go. And when you get to the bottom of the steps and are as deep as you can go in that amount of time, just say “yes” one more time.”

“Yes.” you whisper with finality.

“Thank you!” Lee says.)

You stand at the bottom of the steps at the entrance to what you realize is a windowless basement, dark yet comfortable-looking, and populated by 4 or 5 small groups of people in various states of alertness. You know that before you can continue, you must pick a group to join.

Which group will you join?

  1. People getting snacks.
  2. People drawing spirals.
  3. People on their knees.
  4. People looking lost.
