They mentioned in episode 2 of this season that Muichiro is descended from users of Sun Breathing, just like Tanjiro. They probably have a shared ancestor many generations ago on their fathers' sides, which is why Muichiro's father has the same eyes that Tanjiro and his father do.

2023-09-14 04:38:11 I’ve read things online about the connections in Demon Slayer because it’s so confusing and not straightforwardly stated. I’m not sure how much y’all want to hear just so I don’t spoil, but all I will say is Tanjiro is not directly descended from the first breather, or Sun breathing, Yoriichi. The reason he is able to use sun breathing is because he is descended from someone who was friends with Yoriichi way back (that scene where someone who resembles an older Tanjiro sitting next to Yoriichi is most likely not his father since Yoriichi lived hundreds of years past Tanjiro and his father, Tanjuru, but rather an ancestor). Tanjiro’s ancestors learned the Sun breathing technique from closely watching Yoriichi performing and practicing it for years, and memorized and practiced all the techniques under Yoriichi's guidance. And as such, it has been passed down for generations in the Kamado (Tanjiro’s family) Family along with the Hanafuda Earrings. The reason both Tanjiro and his father resemble Yoriichi is because of the divine nature of Sun breathing. Also Yoriichi gave Tanjiro’s ancestor the earrings and that’s how they were passed down.

Tanjiro is not related to Muichiro. They have mentioned that Tanjiro can do sun breathing bc it's been passed through his family, and that Muichiro is directly a biological descendent of the creator of sun breathing. The difference is nuanced, but important. (Read comment below at your own risk -- contains spoilers lol)
