And that's Squid Game! Be sure to tune in for a hilarious post review regarding what the creator of the show said about this show's ending.

What did you guys think of the series? We're gonna be reading some of your comments on our podcast so let's ask y'all some questions!

-Who were your favorite characters and why?

-Did anyone have any idea the Front Man's identity? Did you think the reveal was going to be that he was a contestant we've seen before or did you already suspect that it was actually a cameo? WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THAT FUCKING CAMEO?

-And most importantly! Which were your favorite "Game" episodes to watch? And if you were forced to participate in ONE of the games, which would you choose and why? (Let's skip the dalgona game since we all know how to easily 'win' that game now. What I'm trying to ask is, which do you think you'd have the best shot at surviving in?

My favorite characters were Gihun and Saebyeok. Gihun because he was a flawed good man, like in the first episode I found him very annoying because he did not seem to be good to his mother and did not care that much about her, same for his daughter like we could see he loves her he couldn't get his shit together to properly that her. But as the episodes went through I started to really like him because he means no harm to anybody, he just doesn't know how to get back on his feet and the games knocked some sense into him I think. Unfortunately that kind of game traumatized someone for life so I don't blame him for his he ended up after winning it felt realistic to me. Then for Saebyeok I love her because she's genuinely a good person and would do anything to protect her brother and family even if it means harming other people. I felt they were the most relatable characters on the show, at least their development spoke to me. I did expect the front man to be to policeman's brother but I did not think he would've tried to harm him. But DANG I did not expect that actor to be the freaking front man, that was a nice surprise. The only game I would like to do is Green Light Red LIght, It's the easiest and the safest game. Or another I would've done is the glass game, I would have just jump on the part where the glass is fixated on the iron bar, like this I would not have fallen no matter what type of glass it was (but maybe I would have been shot because I'm not really playing fair). Also I was very happy to notice that the games were all spoiled and under the eyes of every contestant as they were drawn on the walls (was nice to notice that detail)

Jeanse

Everybodys death was signalled in the show. Ali stole money --> his marbles got stolen. Saebyeok threatened her broker with a knife --> got sliced by douchebag smarty. Sang Hoon wanted to commit suicide, did it. Thug jumped into the water from a bridge --> died on the glass bridge. Maybe there were more, but I didn't spot them

I love this show, it's my favorite show this year! It's the first time in a while where i sat and binged something and was truly captivated by the characters. I was able to predict a lot of things, though, which disappointed me. Like the old man being in charge, the brother being the front man -- but what disappointed me most is that I was hoping they wouldn't have Gihun win. It was far too boring and by the time it was down to the final 3, i knew he was going to win...I really wanted a surprise twist where a character we weren't too focused on won or maybe even Sangwoo winning? So it was more realistic. Or it didnt even have to be realistic, just more interesting. I fastfowarded through a lot of the final episode cause i was no longer interested since it was inevitable. I don't want a season 2, that's for sure. And if they do, I wanna go back in time, but i know if they make it, we'd have to see Gihun considering the ending. I actually wanted Jiyeong to win (the girl with Sabyeok). I thought that'd be a great twist and she could live Sabyeok's life for her and she'd be a great underdog. I also found a lot of the games to not be that interesting? Tug of War was predictable, the honey comb game was fine for the intensity but a waste of a setting, the marble game was eh, but it made sense cause of the context and the beautiful scenes. My favorites were red light green light and the glass game. I kind of wish there were 8 games. I also think they could have cut the vip part out and made the show 8 episodes. (also i despise the fact that the only gay character in this show was a villain and SA'd someone....it was so unnecessary and turned me off the show a bit. They didn't need a gay character, since there's no romance anyways and everyone's basically ambiguous, but the only one that is confirmed queer is this man that forced himself on a guy? gross...it seems to a be trend in korean media to make the only gay character a bad guy. Not a fan :/ )

When I first watched the series i actually enjoyed it, plus I had fun comparing it to another survival game called Alice in borderland. My fav character Gi-hun. Just like majority of the people on earth pretty decent guy just stuck making it in life. This episode was also my fav moment of him. Like after all that, he still couldn’t kill his friend. I loved how he still tried to end the game so both him and sang-woo could go home alive. My second fav character is Sung-woo. Ik most people hated him but I actually loved his character. His character was the only character to me that genuinely felt realistic . Every choice he did from pushing the guy on the glass game to getting Ali killed was arguably wrong but I mean it kept him alive until the end (now him killing byeok was unnecessary) he was just someone who wanted to survive and win that money. Plus I like how he turned out to kind of be them villain of the show when I’m sure majority of us viewers would have thought snake guy was the villain just by the way they portrayed him. He was kind of a surprise villain like damn I was expecting snake guy to do all this fucked up villain shit not mr. college graduate😂 I had no ideas of the frontman honestly it never crossed that damn it may be his brother. But if I had to pick I think the only game I could survive is red light green light honestly. I do think the cop could still be alive tho👀 idk I still hate him for not taking his ass to his daughter😆 he be worried about everything but her lol.

Hey PD! Just thought to share this mini-commentary with the director/writer, art director, Lee Jungjae (Gihun) and Park Haesoo (Sangwoo) (https://youtu.be/QjuB2eC7Mmc). You don’t have to make a post for this but thought you’d be interested for your own viewing pleasure, especially since they talk quite abit about the production of Squid Game. Of course there’s also a fun little cast interview (https://youtu.be/1hCyPxPISDo) which may interest you too! Enjoy!

ngl sangwoo is my favorite. he's so smart and cunning it's just so interesting and makes such a good character. ALSO, maybe its just the hyper anti-capitalist in me but i feel like the entirety of squid game has underlying anti-capitalist themes. the idea that it's a "voluntary" game much like how capitalism is viewed as voluntary (though I view it's the oposite) and the root of it is money. bc in the end the players dont really have a choice, play for money or die on the streets. it just goes to show how f'd up money makes the world. the top 1% (vips) don't have to play the game and the players work for their own enjoyment.

Last episode definitely tanked my person rating a bit. Didn't enjoy the way it turned. Previous episodes were somewhat believable. I can believe endless greed and feeling of superiority from the super wealthy, to the point of putting on sadistic games. But the whole twist with the old man wasn't for me.

Malaki.H

I gotta say PD and Blaire, that Bob Ross and painting costume is genius

Rachel

His hair color is red to represent the anger Gi Hun feels towards the rich/VIP

The old man character is really confusing to me morally. Because if he was idk bored with life, and wanted to do something fun and give people the opportunity to give money, why do the eliminated contestants have to die then? He could’ve done the same concept of games, but the losers just lose and that’s it. They go home. And some might argue “oh well the eliminated contestants would then go home and tell everyone about the games and they’d be found out”. But if the games didn’t involve any killing, they wouldn’t need to be doing it in secret at ALL! They could just make it a publicly known thing. So I just think the old man is severely flawed as a person. But yeah, this is my first time watching the show and I was very surprised at the ending in every aspect

Blaire 🌻

I have an interesting rebuttal towards the gay character in korean media trope but I'll tackle it on the podcast!

flowerbit

Also if I was forced to participate in any of the games, I’d probably do red light green light. Because I have good balance and quick reflexes. I’m not strong enough to do tug of war or the squid game, and I know that in the marbles game and the one with the glass tiles, I’d probably have too much anxiety to actually play/make a decision. I’d probably be one of the people pushed off the glass pane lol

Violet Joo

I hated Gihun but as the episodes went through I liked him more and more. He just showed that even you are fucked up there is still decency in his mind. He robbed his mom and everything but at the last game he decided to quit and save Sangwoo so for me it was like him growing up a little bit. Also I like Saebyuk and her friendship with Gihun. Her not trusting anyone and then making bonds with Jiyeong and Gihun. I remember the director said at first Jiyeong was a guy but then he converted him to a her because he thought her sacrifice was going to be more relatable if the character was a she. I thought that Sangwoo would kill Gihun and get the money for himself but was surprised that at the end he didn't do it. And finally I remember a comment where someone said that all the people watching Squid Game were VIPs.

I am VERY curious about Lee Byung-hun's character - how he went from a winner to the FRONT MAN behind the games??? Because in the beginning his brother only finds out he's missing because he recently stopped paying his rent, and his apartment was barebones. So did he only become the Front Man recently, or has this been happening for a while?? My favorite characters were Kang Sae-byeok, Sang-woo, and the Front Man...in no particular order lol. I have a thing for smart characters who are constantly dancing around that moral horizon, and Sang-woo fits that to a capital T. I don't agree with all of his choices, but I could still see the reasoning behind each one, and that somehow makes him relatable? He's just an incredibly complex character, who happens to be smarter and more pragmatic than everyone else around him which is how he thinks up these under-handed moves that allowed him to get ahead. Kang Sae-byeok, I loved her because she doesn't trust anyone, at least in the beginning, and I feel like I would be that way as well - just going it alone as much as I can. Of course I fell for her and Ji-yeong because I'm gay and want the world for them, rip. Front Man I liked because THAT'S the role I would want to be a part of, if I had to be part of these games, and because his character is incredibly intriguing - he's been on both sides of the curtain at this point, so what must his worldview be like? Out of all the games, I think I would be best at Red Light Green Light, although I'm good with my hands so I'd have a decent chance at Honeycomb as well. I'm 4'11" so Tug of War would literally kill me. Really enjoyed rewatching with you guys, and thank you so much for doing this! I'm glad to see y'all enjoyed it just as much as I did.

formoftherapy

They had to die because exactly they were bored. He said eating, playing, drinking; nothing brought them anymore joy. So what you’re proposing is just pure charity which is something they can already do. They were SPECIFICALLY looking for thrill. So the OLD MAN wanted fun, but his CLIENTS wanted a thrill. And so this is the compromise if that makes sense?

Meruka Hinaru

My favorite character was definitely Saebyeok. Not because I fell in love with her at first sight (which I totally did) but because I think that If I was competing in the games, I think my decisions and my attitude would have matched Saebyeok's. I TOTALLY love Ali, and tho he is angel and will always be loved dearly by my heart, I still had some issues with how naive they portrayed his character. My least favorite character tbh was Gihun. He practically won by luck and I know that happens, but the decisions he took, the way he acted (really hypocritical) just made me detach myself from forming any kind of emotional bond with him. And even tho I don't like Sangwoo and his actions were messed up, I still understood why he acted the way he acted. Still I don't hate any of the characters, because at the end of the day, the root of all evil is CAPITALISM! Anyway, I literally SCREAMED with that cameo! Just a month before Squid Game came out, I convinced my mom to watch Mr. Sunshine. It was really funny when my whole family was watching the reveal of the frontman because my mom and I SCREAMED our lungs out when we saw Lee Byung Hun just standing there while my father and brother were SOOO confused, they thought they had missed some important plot line or something but in fact my mom and I were just two crazy fangirls screaming haha I LOVED the Tug of War episode, that cliffhanger was INSANE. I think I would do great at Red light - green light. I'm great at staying still and my family has told me before that I can practically hide my presence so I would totally nail getting across without being detected, like a ninja. I would totally die in any of the remaining games tho haha I hope I never end up participating in a death match.

best shot at surviving would most likely be red lights, green lights and that's the game I would participate in 100%. Since you are on both feet, as long as you do no get trampled by others, keeping balance and staying still should be very much possible after running.

CRAYON weiwen

I love Sang woo character, he's intelligent and can be very evil to survive, his character is so real, imagine if I'm at his position, I even tried to suicide, what can't I do to survive? betray is easy for me then. My favorite game to watch is the wide bridge, except the number choosing advantage, it's all depends on luck. I'm choosing this game because the result depend on my choice, I have no regret to die if I'm the one decide the move. I finish this series before PD start, been forcing to watch it because all my friend are doing it and recommend it to me, overall is a good show, but since I already watch manga Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji (same style and have even better games that need you to think a lots), this show plot is not fresh to me, and I already know who's the boss at episode 1 when the old man say he have cancer (immediately think of SAW), so behind I can't get the impact that my friend get it. But I'll still waiting for the season 2, just to follow the trend.

Joanne

while rewatching this series with you, there were so many clues especially about the old man. But its weird because they always talk about everybody having an equal chance in the games and playing it fairly, and even killed those guys because they were cheating and such. But the old man who is behind the game and also the rules did not play it fair himself. In a few games he could not die because they helped him out. Like he didn't get scanned by the doll with red light green light so he couldn't get shot, he did not have a lock like everybody else on his cuffs with the tug of war so he could escape if they ended up losing, he knew about that one person would not have to participate in the marbles game so he sat himself away from everybody so he would not get chosen and was surprised when gihun did. So its kind of weird like even tho he only played for some excitement before dying, why did they not play it fair themselves?

Brianna

I refuse to believe that Junho is dead, what I’ve learned from this show is that if there isn’t a body they aren’t dead. I’m hoping for season 2 it goes more into depth of him and his brother.

Amanda Araujo

the creator's response to lebron LMAO but anyway this show was freaking amazing i loved it and it was great watching it with you guys and im really excited for a season two because im also very curious to know more about Lee Byung Hun's character and how he became the front man, also i suspected it was a cameo and junho's brother since they never showed the face of his brother when he was looking into the files My favorite character was definetly Saebyeok, she was fucking badass from beggining and i really liked her personality in general and how cool she was i think my favorite game episodes were the ones with the tug of war, the glass and the green light red light and honestly idk what game i would participate i feel like i would suck in all of them lol

希文 王

I enjoyed watching this! The reveals weren't super shocking to me because I've seen people say that Squid Game goes pretty much the same as other works in this genre, though I guessed wrong at first that the brother was dead, but once we learned he wasn't, he was either a VIP or front man for me Favorite character would be Saebyeok, I'm so sad she died, she tried so hard and yet it couldn't be :( I'm glad that Gihun got back on his feet at least, the ending was alright? Though generally not a big fan of these setups for season 2 (also please for the love of your daughter go see her!), I wish/hope that the next dives deeper into the whole behind the scenes of the games (how did Lee Byung Hun become the front man? how do they pick employees for their games, and how do they categorize them (done by seniority or something else?)

Now that you guys finished it... there is a really cool detail many ppl noticed for the main characters' death... So the way they died is all connected to smth they did in the past... Ali kind of stole took money away from his boss he died when sangwoo stole his marbles. Deok-su jumped from the bridge when philippines casino people were chasing him and he died from the bridge. Sea-byeok died by being stabbed but she nearly stabbed the broker to bring her family (after she poured cofee). Sangwoo was about to suicide anyways ... welp he did in the end... I dont remember if there is anything more... i just found it soooooo intersting and wanted to share ;3

This series is a rollercoaster with every walkthrough I go through with any content creator I follow. I'll say the writing was so good. The way the characters were written basically is what I contribute the success to this show. The way the characters died too were all justified (at least the way I see it) based on their inate behaviour: - Ali: Too naive, got betrayed. - DongUn (The thug): Too aggressive, made a mortal enemy out of MiHyun - SaeByeok: Too much distrust in people. If she confided in GiHun earlier about her wound, things might have played out differently. - SangWoo: Scheming and calculative. Brought out the rage in GiHun in the final fight. I also thought that at the same time, the way GiHun was written to be almost the direct contrast of SangWoo was so brilliant. Unlike SangWoo, GiHun is not one to scheme. In fact, you could almost say he's dimwitted in a pure way. He should have suspected SangWoo had betrayed him as early as the dalgona game but chose to write it off as a mere coincidence instead, is just one example of how he is a simple guy. GiHun being a gambler also makes sense since gamblers rarely think about the negative consequences of their actions. I also had a debate with my friends on whether there could have been more than one winner, and initially I was in line with your thoughts that there could have been but based on the actions of the game masters, I think they would have forced an outcome with only one winner anyway. The main argument for that was that they gave each player a knife after their final meal, almost to say "now you go kill each other until only 2 of you are left standing" Overall fantastic series. Probably the best Netflix series for me this year. Oh and super out of topic here but the actress that plays GiHun's mom in this has Weeekly's Holiday Party as her ringtone lol

newcarsmell

I loved the show, I binge-watched it in like 2 or 3 days. I watch a lot of horror and thriller films and series and I can´t remember the last time I watched something that gripped me so much. Also the director´s response to Lebron is incredible lmao

OMG the costumes being switched at the start had me cracking up lol An interesting detail about Lee Byunghun's character is when Junho goes to look for his brother, the conversation on the phone with their mother and then with the landlady at his apartment makes it sound like he hasn't been missing TOO long (definitely not for years) so it seems like he might have been pulled back in for some reason (whether they contacted him or he sought them out again himself - both of which could be very interesting to explore in a potential season 2). I'm still not convinced that Junho is gone forever. The only other body we didn't see 100% confirmation of death was the old man who popped up alive. I feel like his brother had been so thorough with every other task but they never retrieved Junho's body just to be sure? I really believe he shot him non-fatally. I wouldn't be surprised if a s2 opens with him working undercover (maybe even obsessively) still trying to find the complex again. (Maybe the police DID get some of his messages and found him wounded on the island or maybe Byunghun's character even arranged to have him rescued after giving the rest the impression that he killed him) Most kdramas that end with a "too be continued .... maybe .. ???" I find really frustrating, but I didn't mind it here. I feel like even with that kind of cliffhanger it still feels like a solid ending.

If there's a season 2 it would be interesting if it were a prequel so we can see the backstory of the front man. Also, PD is freaking Nostradamus!!! Does he have any stock picks for me? 😂

I just think Sangwoo is someone who's smart but not wise. He's smart enough to get into the best university and get a decent job, but greedy and reckless enough to commit embezzlement (and get caught) and a bunch of highly risky financial investments, when he cannot afford to do so. It's his greed and arrogance that really ruined him. I honestly think that he is one of the few people who are able to "climb the ladder" and make it into the middle class or middle-upper class later in life. He is tall and handsome, very academically gifted, and have good social skills. He has good education and seems to work in a big company. His mum is a small business owner. Despite coming from a humble background, Sangwoo has some good cards in his hands. If I was him, I would maybe try to be a doctor or lawyer, and/or try to marry the daughter of my company's owner or something. Just be like that doctor guy from The Penthouse lol

I can actually understand the ending for this season, because the games are only once a year and it lasts for 6/7 days. So if he didn’t go back, he needed to wait a year before trying to stop the games. And I think the chip they planted in him, so they could scan his number, is also a tracking device. So maybe they are following his movements like that and he needed to get the chip out first before going to see his daughter. But this is just my opinion, haha. And I also don’t think the cop is dead. I think he survived and is trying to uncover the games while staying ‘dead’. So nobody would be suspicious or try to kill him for real.

AEy

Honestly, I think the ending is totally in-line with Gi-hun's character. Throughout the show he was charitable and helpful to others whenever he had the ability to do so. He fed the stray cat some fish, he gave that girl at the counter a small portion of his winnings from the bet he made, etc. He just isn't the type of person who knows they have the means to help others, but doesn't. His selfless choice is honestly commendable.
