Iris

Amanda Araujo

Serena

omg i just finished this like a week ago but im excited to rewatch wohoo

holls

this set up is SO cosy i love it !!

jiminycricket

In the discussion on if this should be real and televised, it reminds me of the movie Nerve (2016) with Emma Roberts where you need to do dares and film them for money, no talking to the cops, etc and the world watches from their phones.

czennieluvie

I'm sure you guys will be careful, but just wanted to say try your best to avoid spoilers even though they're basically everywhere now, try your best since your watching experience may suffer if you know some things ahead of time

Harley

everytime I see the black mask guy I just imagine it's actually Min Namkoong ready to start I-Land all over again

SPOILER FREE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION: Okay so in response to the question posed at the end: Yes if only humans wouldn't take it EVEN FURTHER. I wouldn't necessarily say that it becoming real would be "wrong" per say, but rather that it's a slippery slope to a fancy new form of murder. The fact that it could be rigged or fixed if it became publicly viewed, the fact that people would find ways around the "fairness" of the game to get people they hate or simply want out of the way into it and killed, etc. I feel like by adding the layer of "this game NEEDS to be fair" is where you start to see it fall apart. Humans love to fix games and play by their own rules to get ahead, it's literally what has led us to the point where these kinds of games (death or money) seem like a good idea! And also, I'm looking at this question as if I'm putting my own morality to the side. (if i was in these games I'd play to WIN, no matter what. sorry not sorry y'all) I mean, the "right" answer is to get rid of capitalism and run the world by a perfect and fair egalitarian system that can never exist so long as humans are indeed humans. But given the world in which we live, I always have felt like we're one or two worldwide events away from the Hunger Games or Squid Games. (And thus 2020 really scared/stressed the fuck out of me) Pushing all reality and morality to the side, yes. I do think some form of squid games could work irl but not for long. (also I'd love for y'all to come back to this question yourselves once you finish the series because I think that will really affect your own answers!)

Amanda Araujo

i dont think i could watch a real life squid game and i also think if something like that comes true it would be the day where we know the sociaty has gone completly wrong

Ena

When I first watched this and it showed the back of the Frontman's head, a little part of me was thinking. . . . .Logan Lee?!?!?!???!?

Kei G

I mean consider the gladiators in ancient Rome. They were essentially the ancient version of the Squid Game. If they won and continued to win, they would have glory and fame. If they lost, they would die (with some exceptions, but in general). That lasted for thousands of years without issue, so I don't see why it could not happen in reality now. I think the issue I have with an IRL Squid Game is that poverty is not always by choice? What about those who are in debt from huge medical bills or those who's relatives have shunted them with large debts? It would definitely be a weird place to consider such circumstances.

eleftheria k.

lmao the squid game is already happening in some forms irl. also, these ppl aren't exactly in the same power status as those who hold the game. so i can't really see the concept of true consent applying in this case. everything that is happenning is forced by their situation (poverty etc),

Maria

yess and I also think The Devil Judge dives into this very well. looking forward to PD & Blaire's thoughts on what happens on there.

Anonymous

tbh i think it would be a bad idea for it to exist. because it feels like the entire point if this huge game is to exploit, take advantage of and prey on poor people who are down and desperate enough to consent. it feels sick in a way to use poor people as pawns in a game for entertainment. its like saying 'hey we can use u as collateral because you have nothing else left anyways' i mean i can definitely see how it would be an interesting thing to exist but its just so slimey

catanda

ok but PD with the mask jump scared me and i feel like blaire is staring into my soul lmao, pls this is so good

Connor (Cyndr)

I don't agree with consent == ok. It's like cult group suicide or something, I don't think we should be allowing any sort of event where people just gamble their lives for money, whether it's broadcast or not. I think there are other ways to give people a chance out of poverty that doesn't end in death. Just remember that gladiator matches and death-fights used to exist on a societal entertainment level but no longer do. This is the same thing on a larger scale with more at stake and a greater negative impact.

Connor (Cyndr)

I do think the argument regarding military and police of "knowing the risk" is a valid comparison, but the justification behind their existence is supposed to be societal benefits on a larger scale than just hundreds dying for the chance to make money (the actual result of that benefit is obviously not the same and you could definitely argue the harm caused by those organizations cancels that out)

Shannon Ryan

What's interesting about Squid Game is this illusion of fairness, but also the illusion of choice. They target these desperate people with offers they can hardly refuse when life is hell outside anyway. They know they'll "consent" because they hardly have a choice, die out there or in here. It's agreement under exploitation. I would never want this to be a real thing. Poverty already kills and the system is rigged to make it out to be a "fair game" of life. Not all these people have a fair chance for a variety of reasons. Often when they lose it's the system rigged against them. They'll "work hard" for their success, but at the cost of lives, of their humanity. I don't doubt this could happen and that thought depresses me immensely.

Phani

Found this drama to be okay…. I think it was way overhyped…. Like its good but most Americans are treating it like it’s the only show ever

Samantha

Once you finish the series you should check out KennieJD's youtube video of the series, she literally put words into every thing I thought about this series and its characters. I agree with her 100% on her whole breakdown of it all and like she organizes her thoughts so well!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BLAIRE 🎉🎉

Anonymous

Love the set up!! So excited for the Friday Night Fright Club.. Thank you!!

Dia

Happy Birthday Blaire! Guess I’ll be rewatching Squid Game with you guys!

rockthekazb0t

@Samantha I saw Kennie's video as well! Agreed with her opinions on Sangwoo and Gi-hun(which I guess are considered hot takes??) if you think in the context of doing everything it takes to win, the actions become clear, if not morally right

Anonymous

I don't think it's right to have a real squid game, even if it's voluntary. It preys on a person's desperation, and glorifies death. In Roman times, gladiators would fight to the death in front of a rabid crowd. I'd like to think we live in more civilized times.

Tetsuo

Juliana Ferrari

I think it would be super wrong to have a real squid game and I could never watch it or have fun with it, for me watching the show itself wasn't fun, was it engaging? Yes! But I personally did not have fun while watching it. I think that nobody should ever be offered the opportunity to gamble with their own life.

EC

I think your question on whether the game should be real should be reserved for the last episode. Without spoiling the plot, I can't answer it in detail but here's what I'll say in the meantime. I think there are 3 things to consider when thinking about implementing any system: 1. what purpose does it serve? i.e. is it a moral objective or "greater good" so to speak 2. What are the implications/effects on the people involved (be it the receivers/the givers/the spectators)? i.e. does it set a dangerous precedent for something more sinister. 3. How is the system going to be governed/policed? This needs to be in place to prevent exploitation/abuse of the system. I'll not give any answers at this point to these questions in the context of the show since it will be a spoiler but I'll answer it in the context of the police/military since it was used as an example. The reason why I think the police/military system is justified: 1. It serves to protect the people. A country/nation/civilisation and therefore its pure intent is for the "greater good" 2. The people who provide the service (i.e. policemen/soldiers) have a career. It creates jobs. It protects the nation/society from threats, thus benefiting its occupants. 3. If a good government is in place, there will be controls put in place to ensure that this form of power given is not abused. This is where I would say for example, if the governance is poor, then it is harder to justify the implementation of the system.

EC

I think you're overreacting with this a little. PD is just opening up a dialogue for debate. It's not like PD is part of a government body that can actually implement this sort of thing so I don't see why you should get so upset about this. In fact, it's important to talk about stuff like this because society does have its issues and HOW we go about addressing them is important. Also, you kind of spoiled the plot here so I suggest rethinking what you wrote.

Aiz

Hm..I don't think any "consent" given to have a squid game (irl or not) would be valid. 99% of the people willing to put their lives on the line for money would do so because they're victims of a system that favours the rich and feel like they have no other way out, which means that consent is being given under duress. Also, what really got me about the concept of a squid game is that you have a bunch of rich people (I'm assuming by the set up and the tech etc etc), who have the resources to identify people who are desperate and in need in a way that others can't. Then, they assign each player a 100 million won. Then they decide that everyone should fight to the death for amusement. In an irl game, wouldn't the process be the same? You know who needs help, and then you manipulate them into giving consent or you exploit their hardships, and then you dangle money you already have infront of their faces, and you choose not to help them. Instead, you exploit them and use their lives for entertainment. So. Yeah no, no squid game could ever be okay for me lol

EC

I don't disagree about your opinion of that. In fact I do agree with you. However, you assume PD is pushing this as though it is a suggestion to implement this, when all PD is doing is asking an opinion of people. Even to the point of saying "please don't insist on it, or I'm out"? What in the world? By the way, you don't think using your support/subscription as a threat to open speech is disgusting? It is disgusting to me. Isn't it to you?

Hannah Q.

The question of "should we let the squid game happen in reality" is kinda like many consent-based capitalistic issues such as "should we allow organ trades", "should we allow human trafficking", "should guns to banned" etc. Essentially it's the questions of "should we just allow everything that people consent themselves to, even if the activity in itself is very BAD and inhumane?" and "Does consent give you the right to do everything, and the right to allow OTHER people to do everything to you?" It seems technically fine, in the current hyper-individualistic world where people are kinda obsessed with personal freedom and consent. But at some point we just have to draw a line. I'm someone who supports mandatory vaccination against covid-19 (unless one has special medical reasons). I think some people just need to chill with their personal freedom and do what's right for their community/society at large. If people are ever allowed to kill each other on TV for public entertainment, or even just for the private entertainment of some rich billionares like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, then this world will be fking DOOMED. No morality left. Just entertainment to death...literally.

Hannah Q.

Like the character Saebyeok was literally fucked right from her birth. She didn't choose to be born in North Korea. She didn't choose to desperately need money to take her mum to SK, and then get scammed, and then need more money. When she gave "consent" to the squid game, it's like - Ok. But this girl never had a chance.

Hannah Q.

I mean...slavery also lasted for thousands of years. Then it ended, for good reasons. Of course slavery could come back again. So were those extremely cruel ancient games. But most of us wouldn't want that to happen. It can absolutely happen. I'm not a super optimistic person. This world is crazy. But I don't want it to happen, especially if it's motivated by poverty and desperation. When people are desperate enough, they can consent to basically everything. Selling organs, selling oneself as servants and sex slaves to rich people in order to support your family (a lot of poor girls and boys in ancient times did that for their family), etc. And there's a reason why organ sales and slavery are mostly banned in the world. Some things are just more important than consent.

Catrin

Anyone else think number 67 (the pickpocket) looks EXACTLY like Ni-ki from Enhypen?

Ellie

Personally I think that if there were people desperate enough to agree to a game like this and risk their life, there's a lot more we could do as a society to make them less desperate than just promise them money and watch them die for entertainment ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Malaki.H

Yeah she does, they have been compared so much on the Internet

Malaki.H

Wait lol doesn't the rock paper scissors tournament exist already

Marcia

We still have games like that (reality tv) I highly suggest the video of Ibrahim Kamit :)

2021-10-16 16:58:56 The video and sound are not synced, is it just this episode, or is this happening across all the drama reactions? I checked on Netflix just in case, and the sound there is totally synced, so it's not my computer. I haven't seen Squid Game yet, and was looking forward to watching it with you, but I would just get annoyed with the sync issue, lol, so I'll watch it on Netflix. Hope it's a good one!

Hey, I hear you but I think the way you put it wasn't expressing that you personally will be against this and stop watching this reaction series particularly, it sounded more like you were going "never talk about it again because I'm not okay with it or I pull your funding". Just don't watch this reaction series. It's totally fair for you to express your disagreement and disdain for that thinking, but to take it as far as giving PD some ultimatum to avoid this topic because of your strict moral code? Just don't watch, others will discuss and watch because they want to. Just because PD discusses this concept as a reality doesn't mean that he's the end all be all to people tiptoeing some line trying to decide if it's okay or not. People are responsible for their own thoughts and actions. Don't censor, just avoid.

jjeojkl

enha went on 1thek’s iddp recently and they saw an article about it !

Misha

Think it's something on your end dude, the sound for me is synced.

Mats Lind

When that dude tries to use the ATM in the beginning, do the beeps correspond to his pressing the buttons? That's when I noticed it, with the sound being quite delayed. This did not happen on Netflix.

希文 王

also synced on my end, may be a one off problem on your end? have you tried watching other episodes/videos on patreon or refreshing the page?

Lastelios

venom is such a shit movie that it is beautiful

Lastelios

I think it could be a real game maybe with serious criminals in prison because the prisons are overcrowded

Lastelios

capital punishment should be legal, it is not society that sends him to death but himself. he can choose whether to commit the crime and die or not to commit serious crimes, like squid game.

formoftherapy

I expected Venom to be awful so Venom 1 was a nice surprise. Venom 2 was FUN. A good movie? Hell no and yet it was charming and I had a blast

pip pop

nah i could never watch a real live squid game like it just feels soo wrong to watch ppl die for my entertainment

flowerbit

I personally would be against a real life squid game. I just think society needs to move in the opposite direction of that. I feel like people dying for the chance to win that amount of money just feels like an allegory for the worst aspects of capitalism. And I think for society to be bettered (in general, outside of a squid game world) we need people to not be literally dying to have the money to live a happy life that I personally feel they deserve. Also, I just feel that especially if it was televised or something, watching it as a form of entertainment feeds into a bad voyer-istic part of our brains where we want to see certain things even though we know it would be harmful for us. And my final point is that I feel like an event like this, is just another way for the rich to dehumanize the poor, because realistically, the only way many wealthy people could stomach watching this would be by tricking oneself into believing they’re not real people that matter anyway, and that they are perhaps even criminal or like animals.

flowerbit

This is my first time watching the show tho so I’m really looking forward to seeing how it goes

Mats Lind

Sorry, maybe I should've been more precise. The sound coming from PD and Blaire is perfectly synced with the video, but the sound coming from the drama is delayed. I'll edit the initial comment.

I mean this is basically capitalism but illegal, i mean i wonder how many companies/lives amazon has destroyed to become this dominant. FYI i love amazon lol…

Donslaught

PD what you're asking is a little different than what Squid Game is. You're asking if Squid Game should exist and yet as it is, the games aren't televised. That should be two separate questions. Should Squid Game exist? If everything was fair and all contestants were made well WELL aware that either they solely win a week-long contest of children's games against 400+ other people or they die I think that could be an interesting alternative option to say, extreme debt or homelessness. Should Squid Game be televised? That is what takes this idea from fringe satire to dystopian. Think about if there was someone who regularly went to watch executions. Something's go to be wrong with that person, right? Now if society as a whole did that then something's got to be wrong with society. I've been reading a book recently called A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum by Emma Southon (which I recommend everyone read) and one of the things it talks about is how common death (especially murder) was in ancient Rome. The only thing I can think of is hearing about all of the things that the Romans did that made them so fascinating: Gladiators, orgies, extreme excesses in every facet of human nature. And look what happened to them. I don't know if having televised murder events would be a good thing, but I do know that I don't want to exist in a place that does.

Daniel Browning

LOL PD saying "All animal abusers should get the death penalty" while at the same time funding animal abuse and suffering and pain and factory farming every time they eat. If they feel so strongly about animal abuse, maybe they should stop paying for it to happen every day.

Isabella N.

hey and maybe you can decide to not be an asshole who shames people for their diets 🥰

Angie

i understand the annoyance of people's hypocrisy when people who eat meat get angry at animal abuse, but at the end of the day, it's how majority of the world is raised....and the aggression is not necessary. There can be a much kinder way of having this conversation.

Wheezefest

The post commentary about whether or not squid game should be real and what that would mean for society reminds me a lot of a conversation I had with someone about a real life purge. I'm pretty sure you'd know the concept of the purge so I'm not going to explain that. Basically my stance was, even if there was data to support that this benefits society by reducing poverty and crime rates- there's something really fucking disgusting knowing you're supporting heinous crimes due to circumstances while also saying "hey look at how low our crime stats are :D". And that's kind of how I feel about squid game. Would it benefit people? Maybe. Would it be dehumanizing people in need for entertainment purposes? Absolutely. We already see cases of that in media but the difference is- death isn't involved. Even if contestants consented with full knowledge there's a high chance they will die- it's just fucked up knowing that we'd become so acclimated to the concept that we won't view people's lives as meaningful as before and the rich would most likely find a way to get even richer off of it- geez this got long and I'm not even sure if I'm making sense

h.

i literally put. off watching this show so that i could watch it with you guys ! im excitedd

Rachel

that’s because the show is better than most American shows rn
