All of Song Joongi’s closeups look like green screen because they are! As crazy as it is to believe, he has never been to Italy and has filmed everything in Korea. The scene with his brother Paolo in Italy was shot separately, Paolo’s shot was actually in Italy and they just added Vincenzo’s green screen shot blending the two. CRAZY

I'm italian and this show was SO fun to watch. I think Song JoonKi and the writers did an amazing job at portraying Vincenzo's character. The lines in Italian sound very natural, although obviously we can hear a bit of an accent, but that's totally normal, it’s actually really impressive that he is able to have this pronunciation after only a few months of studying for the show!! The sentences he says are very fitting to the scenes and don't sound awkward or unnatural at all, especially when he curses ahahaha. Props to him and the writers!! BTW, the translation in English REALLY downplays the curse words he uses, the real curse words he is saying are much much stronger and as an Italian it is absolutely hilarious to watch. And yeah! All other characters besides Vincenzo are acted out by Italian actors

Thanks for the insight! I personally don’t speak Italian but I’ve also heard from various sources that Song Joon Ki did a great job with mastering his lines. Also I was really impressed by the italian actors performances, I especially enjoyed the actor portraying Paolo

The English subtitles without the closed captions seem to be slightly better. I haven't checked throughout the series, but I checked for the first scene of Chayoung and it's different and maybe better

Ahhhh this show... The cringe in this show is real. My advice is ACCEPT early on, that this show is comedy. That's the only way I can go through with this lol. Don't get me wrong. It's not all cringey. I like the cast, the plot and whatnot. It's just the ridiculousness of some parts is too much for me. But it is doable for me. Every time something ridiculous comes up, I just remind myself "IT'S COMEDY. IT'S COMEDY!" Lmao. ALSO, for the subs. Don't turn on English [CC]. Instead, use just "English." I'm not Korean so idk, but the subtitle errors you pointed out were correct in the "English" subs.

I feel like the subtitles are meant to be for the dubbed version. Like you know how in anime when it's dubbed the sentences are totally different from the original. I think that's the case here too. But on the other hand, Spanish shows on Netflix also have a horrible translation. So could just be a them thing🤷🏽‍♀️.

I just started this a few days ago, and yeah the closed caption version is for the dub which is why it says he's speaking english and why it's so bad. The english subtitles are much better! Hopefully you get to use those going forward

I really think you're gonna love this drama. It's like Imitation funny times 10. Plus they love dropping Easter eggs and references. Also, there's 2 english subtitles. You have English CC on instead of English. They're just captioning the terrible dubbing.

im so excited i love this drama so much and i find crazy that the subtitles in English are so wrong because everything you pointed out when i watched with Portuguese subtitles were accurate and exactly how you said they meant lmao idk why only the english version has this problem of mistranslation

Regarding the subtitles, I watched it with german subs since i am german and they were pretty accurate i believe like when you explained what they actually said in korean, I remembered the german subs since i watched the first episode about 7 times with different friends and they were fitting so i don't know why the english ones are so weird.... anywaysI'm so hyped to rewatch that show with you damn

If you change the subtitles from English (CC) to just English, the subtitles will be a lot better.

For the shower bathroom thing i believe they do it else in Asia too. I’ve been to China and was staying at my grandparents place and they also dont have a divider for the shower its just the whole room with tiles. The bathroom was extremely small so water would get everywhere on the ground and even on the toilet seat. As a person whose used to having a separate shower i prefer the western way.

1:08:07- pd it’s funny that you mentioned how Song Joong-ki looks like Sunghoon from Enhypen cuz when Sunghoon used to train for figure skating in Gwacheon, he was nicknamed “the Song Joong-ki of Gwacheon” cuz of their similar looks and one of the things Sunghoon was known for in figure skating was his good looks!!

Is it possible that the Closed Captions are there for the English Dub of the show? Like there might be closed captions meant for the dub and subtitles meant for the original Korean audio. That might explain why it's so bad...

As an Italian it's quite interesting hearing him talk in Italian. While it is not bad or wrong, especially at the start you can see the difference with the other italian actors. But what they got right is all the swearing even though the subtitles won't represent that obviously. Also interested if PD realized that Taecyeon from 2PM is in this drama

Actually I watch it with spanish subs and it was actually accurate, is the first time that I see the englisg subs in netflix and is kinda different from what I saw, but I think there is another eng subs not the cc

Yeah, that's totally the CC English subs, I just checked on Netflix and the regular English subs are correct. The CC English Subs are based on the english dub, that's why they are ridiculously inaccurate haha

PD the frustration you feel for the Korean translations, I feel it for the Italian translations because Vincenzo was cursing left and right and they never translated it lol. Especially the beautiful “Korea di merda del cazzo!!!” that he yells after he gets conned by the driver, he’s yelling “fucking shitty ass Korea” over and over but him saying it in Italian makes it so much funnier lmao

about the bathrooms i also prefer the all tiles. i guess it's an asian thing lol. i don't mind if our toilets are wet. we use water a lot too.

For the thing with the subtitles it's honestly Netflix most likely being lazy. The probably got the initial script back when the series was greenlit and probably never bothered to edit any rewrites that may have happened between then and now unless they were major. And about the "In English" subtitles, once again I think it's their computer system assuming that because the actors have switched back to the main language of the series that it would be "In English." My personal theory is that it's just a lazy and American company being an American company.

I definitely felt your frustration towards the translations. When I watch shows in Spanish on Netflix I need English subtitles because dialects are hard to understand but they’re slightly off, but only to the point that it’s a little annoying and not to this extent. However, when watching this show it was even more frustrating because I could tell the Italian subtitles were wrong because some words sound like Spanish but I didn’t know if I was overthinking or if they really were wrong. Now I’m thinking they completely butchered it and it’s really annoying.

PD! I absolutely love watching these dramas with you two, it makes me feel like I'm watching with friends and makes the experience ten times better. Your plight with the English translations is completely relatable, I think it might be the CC version and not the regular subs? Not too sure though. Excited to start a new series with you two and if you haven't already, I would love to see you add Crash Landing on You to your list of shows to begin whether it be soon or purely in the future, I think you would enjoy it and I would love to rewatch with you. Hey PD the subtitles automatically are on the CC subs for the English dub so maybe that’s why it’s really off. Other than that can’t wait to keep up with this every week with everyone

I bet others have mentioned this but the subtitles you have are the English [CC] ones, you'll want to click on the the subtitles that just say English. They're a thousand times more accurate.

As someone that used to have to watch anime with fansubs back in the day, I always had a preference for certain translators because they would translate stuff more literal? Like I like when translators use actual honorifics instead of "miss or Mr." because it adds more depth to knowing relationships also when words can't be directly translated like I think back in the day One Piece translators wouldn't translate the word "nakama" because of it's in depth meaning compared to just saying "friend/family" Recently I did see arguments about dubs completely changing dialogues in anime like it was that Sk8 anime where they had someone say "ladies and bros and non-binary hoes" and whether that's appropriate or right to change that from what the writer originally said. So I'm curious PD if you wrote something in Korean and someone wanted to dub your work how would you feel if they did something like that?

I've watched this series twice because I find it entertaining and I didn't remember the subs being this BAD only for me to realize that netflix offers English and English CC. I think you click English CC 'cos the English only option has the correct subs

Yeah so I went and matched what you just translated on the regular English subs and not closed captions what you have and its accurate there! So I feel better knowing I watched it with the regular English subs and not the closed captions so thats the problem!! Also I'd prefer the standard American bathroom set up lol. Also this drama is so good its in my top three with Boys Over Flowers and Kill Me Heal Me!! Taecyeon plays the perfect villain I love his character so much! And he's an amazing actor to pull off that role! I wasnt expecting this to be so funny either! I'm about half way through on ep 11 and I'm rewatching it with you now. I cant wait for you to see what happens omg its beautiful and brilliant all the way through!

And I totally agreed with you that the subtitles are bad. As I understand Korean, it kinda changes the intention of characters. There surely are significant reasons behind their word choosing and stuff.

I am german and ofc i watch with german subs. i i just like to say the german subs are exactly like you translated it and not like those english subs at all. In conclusion i am glad that i know what they really said.

I started watching the first episode on my own and stopped about 20 minutes in cause I knew I had to watch it with you instead! I absolutely love Song Joong Ki and can't wait to see him in this role. If you guys were willing to do an older drama in furture drama clubs I would highly recommend you watch Descendents of the Sun! It's incredibly good and I think you'd both enjoy it!
