The first is when my rent is due. My lease was up in September and so I renewed it.

Except I woke up today to find that my rent has increased by $500. And instead of the agreed upon $870 rent my rent is now $1300 and there’s a month to month fee.

I don’t think my apartment complex renewed my lease. If that’s the case I can’t stay here.

Hoooly moly. I’m currently traveling but I’ll be home today in the afternoon and go straight to the front office and hopefully sort this out.

All the best PD!!

Chloe

I hope everything is okay

Susan Bermudez

Are you okay for the first month so you can find a place?

Tyisha

You definitely should. They should have notified you in advance for sure about that increase amount. Good Luck!

Brittany Urbati

Unless the new price was in the rental agreement you should be fine.

Benjamin

Good luck because that sounds a bit shady

Kira Paige

hope everything turns out okay!

No...ordinarily I would be but I have to pay my editor (who I fired) their last paycheck AND I have to suddenly pay my taxes which is altogether roughly $4,000... Which will leave me with kind of nothing so I am going to try and get a loan???

riverbandhope

i hope things works out. :(

Jacob Peter Bankel

No way they wouldn't notify you months ahead of the change. Could you have overlooked it somewhere? If you haven't recieved any info, there might be a case/lawsuit to be had...

Octobre

What the actual hell!!! How is that legal??

Susan Bermudez

Do you have either a signed new lease, or a signed addendum to the old lease, showing the new rent of $870 and new contract period? Because otherwise, I can see the assumption of month-to-month happening. Absolutely not worth staying if they don't revert it though.

That happened to me when I lived in Oakland. Increased by about $650. But they did it when the lease was up for renewal and we had to sign a new agreement. If you renewed your lease in writing, and you both signed it, they can’t adjust the rent afterward unless there is a clause allowing them to do so. I’m so sorry, I remember the whole ordeal being 1 gigantic pain in the ass and super frustrating. 🙁. I hope everything gets better!

Oh my... That seems messed up and fishy. That doesn't sound legal to me... I hope that it's just a mistake...

Move to Mexico 😉with that amount you can rent a house and pay the bills and some part of groceries, jk but true

angelkat

That sucks PD. 💕😓

A.O. Chika

Are they legally allowed to increase your rent at will?

When our year lease was up we had to either sign a 3m, 6m or 1yr lease where the 1 yr was the least but still 200 more...not only that if we moved month to month instead it would be almost 500 more. Unfortunately it was in the lease agreement...and the entire apartment complex had a rent increase. However I thought we would be locked in on our rate. We were planning to go month to month and save to move to a house, but hello 500 more for rent was the amount we were going to save. Basically the universe bitch slapped us and the apartment complex owns our souls for another 6 months. It sucks! It's in the lease but it's not like a clear statement. Its vague and loose to interpretation. Meh😤
