Why would someone build a GIANT runway with a parallel taxiway, in the middle of nowhere in Florida? And how come is it still there AND being used today, a full 55 YEARS after it started getting built? Even if you know what this is about, I bet that there are details about this place and its present use that will surprise you. Fascinating! The Everglades are one of the worst environmental disasters in the US, and the same can be said for much of the state of Florida. I spent 2 days in the Everglades (ironically because of a flight delay due to a snowstorm in the Northeast) and it is amazing. But large areas have been destroyed due to fresh water being drawn from it for agriculture (mostly sugar) and population growth. Efforts are being made to restore it. It's been described as a slow moving river of grass. All of Florida is barely above sea level, and salt water is slowly encroaching on the Everglades. And Florida weather? Some of the worst in the US. It's regularly hit by major hurricanes. And speaking of alligators, have you heard about the problem with Burmese pythons? They actually eat the alligators, and were introduced when pet owners released the snake when they got too big. Good orientation to the "politics" and economic preparations needed to support airplane travel. Might be a good precursor to another program on same subject matter, but more oriented to accommodations for present-day and say, 5-year futures of aircraft. Also, there are probably (in Europe) some examples that USA could use, of airport with direct connections with high-speed rail. (We have seen some sightseer-oriented such examples, with glimpses even on TV shows like "The Amazing Race"
