Living in Houston I remember this crash. At the time we were told it was weather related. Although the weather was a minor part, now I understand the real reason for the accident. Thank you Petter for explaining it so clearly. By the way I grew up west of your home in Sweden across the border, but have been living in Houston since 1989.

It should be automatic to trust one's instruments, not one's senses. This is drilled extensively in pilot training. I would think that if a candidate does not show that they have mastered this -- especially in a startle situation -- in training, they should wash out. It's equivalent, in a certain sense, to being blind. Here, blind to the instruments.
