If you consider military aviation, I would like your opinion on the engine upgrades for the B-52. Instead of replacing the 8 Pratt and Whitney TF33 engines with fewer larger engines, it appears the USAF will replace the Pratt and Whitney TF33 one-for-one with the Roles Royce F130, which powers planes like the Gulfstream.

Some years ago, there was a joint proposal from Boeing and R-R to re-engine the B-52s with four RB211-535s, then the most reliable big turbofan in service. However, I understand that the issue with the B-52 is that it would not have sufficient rudder authority to handle the shutdown of a -535, particularly on an outboard pylon. Presumably, a double engine failure of TF33s on the one pylon was/is of sufficiently low probability for it to be acceptable. The life (and reliability) of the F130 engine (in actuality a BR725) should be far greater than that of the TF33, and its fuel burn will be far lower.
