The king had remarried when the princess was very young, and along with the new marriage came a bratty new step-brother. In their youth, they would compete fiercely, and to the king's amusement his daughter would always win. He encouraged her to follow her heart's desires, no matter where they lay, though there was always an unspoken rule that politics would never be her domain, despite her sharp mind and tactical spirit. Certain ancient laws around passing on the torch simply could not be changed.

Not needing to worry about politics had its advantages: the princess became something of a rake in the kingdom. She was known to have stolen the hearts of many lads and lasses. Yet there was only one who had stole her heart. So it seemed a fitting punishment for the spoiled prince that he choose the duchess for his bride, one final way to get back at his step-sister. The plan worked--perhaps too well for the prince's own good--for the princess departed the kingdom on the day of their engagement. Her last words to her lover, cryptically "I'll find a way to wield the sword."

The princess was racing against the clock, with only a few weeks until the wedding, she grew desperate. Learning of witches beyond her boarders that knew of transmutation magic, she sought them out offering any price they requested. The witches said they would give her a spell that would make her "A ruler of men and women alike. A conqueror, adored by all and able to wield the sword like none before her." The princess, in her desperation did not consider what that might mean for her. But bathing under the full moon, with power energy pulsing through her veins, it quickly became clear what the witches meant.

Rushing back to her kingdom, she realized she had missed the wedding. But luckily, she had not yet missed the consummations of the marriage. There would be a king crowned by morning, but it would not be her step-brother...
