I agree. Moffat had this tendency in the RTD era of infusing his own slightly contrary ideas of what the show should be on his episodes. I feel the same about his obsession with dancing as a sexual euphemism. Though I admit I also didn't like the idea of River potentially being his future wife/romantic partner, because I'll probably always and forever only ship him and Rose... I also fully agree about the garbage at the characters but brilliant at the intricacies and conceptual stuff. like, post-RTD has some really good concepts, and even general characters, but I noticed this sort of instant switch from the start of Matt Smith where it felt like the show had lost its heart, and it never quite regained it from what I've seen so far. I just wasn't ever as emotionally invested in the characters

Sadly, don’t have time to watch right now, so I just watched your comments. So glad you liked it. Agree - this is the best double to date (and if we count them together, the best episode?) I. Love. River. Song. A woman who’s a match for the Doctor in strength of personality. Capable, beautiful, sarcastic, yet still warm. I cry at her final scene with the Doctor every single time. Alex Kingston is such a wonderful actress, and has great chemistry with David. I could say so much about these episodes, but I’ve got stuff to do, so I won’t! I’m looking forward to watching your reactions to this and the previous one in full.

without you guys constantly doing bits, your reviews would probably average only 5 min. I love it though, don't change a thing

Glad you loved it! Honestly remains one of the best two parters in DW history. Also written by Steven Moffat who becomes the show runner next season. River Song is his character and he’s honestly my favorite writer when it comes to complicated time travel stories. Like you see with River he’s really good at jumbling up the times lines but in a way that it all makes sense in the end. He also has written some of the longest story threads. Some that are revealed across multiple seasons. Steven Moffat also was the main writer who wrote BBC’s Sherlock which is an absolutely brilliant show! But with very short seasons and long episodes. In my head Moffat takes up two thirds of the SuperWhoLock trifecta. Even though they’re pretty differ shows it’s pretty guaranteed if you like Supernatural, Doctor Who, or Sherlock, you will like the other two shows as well. The fandoms had such big overlap it kind of became one huge fandom referred to as SuperWhoLock and there’s tons of crossover fiction, art, and memes

This show must be giving you a lot of subs for you to keep reacting to it, because it's clear as day that it's a chore for you to do so

i have such mixed feelings about river song as a character. alex kingston is amazing, of course, but i feel like moffat used her in this instance to, like, pre-emptively raise up his doctor as the coolest version, except he did it by trying to demean tennant's just a little ("he's not quite done yet" "now my doctor, i've seen whole armies turn and run away..." "yeah, someday [he'll be the doctor]" and the subtle talking down like to a kid. like fuck off.) unfortunately, it's an attitude reinforced by every soundbite and interview and panel i've ever seen of moffat discussing his writing or his doctor and companions (compared to others) and so it's an distinction i'm unable to separate from any of his work on the show. which absolutely sucks because he IS great at the intricate timey-wimey stories, he's just absolute garbage at characters when it comes to making them feel real (made esp. obvious in the longterm :/ )
