So, to answer the "Why isn't Aang asking for help learning to Earthbend?" question, it's because he can't yet. As was mentioned earlier (and was shown in the recap), Aang has to learn the elements in order: Air, Water, Earth, and finally Fire. He has to master Waterbending before he takes Earthbending for a spin, which is why they are headed to the North Pole, where the other Water Tribe lives.
