It's interesting the way Anna's story ended in this episode. We all know that the Castiel character was only supposed to be in a few episodes, but I believe that Anna was actually supposed to be that "Castiel" like Angel to Sam and Dean. Maybe they thought it would be good to have a female in that role with S&D, but they really liked Misha Collins and there was a lot of positive feedback about Castiel as well as the chemistry between the actors, especially Jensen and Misha. So, unfortunate for the actress who played Anna who thought she was going to be the recurring Angel who S&D always call on.

Huh I thought for sure someone would mention the continuing treatment of women on SPN! They're only there for mangst. Unfortunately Anna was not the first we've seen of this and she won't be the last :'( Also, I infer that the vessel Uriel possesses in the past is the FATHER of the vessel that Uriel possesses in the present. Michael is not the only angel who's said that the ability to possess a human is in their blood, Castiel also said that to Jimmy ("he said I'm special, that it's in my blood") and it's why he was able to possess his daughter Claire ("it's in her blood, as it was in yours"). And given that both vessels look to be mid-20s to mid-30s and they traveled back in time roughly 30 years....that makes the most sense to me. Also something I never noticed on probably a dozen rewatches until this last time is the fact that when Sam tells Mary that an angel is after her, she says "There's no such thing," meaning that Mary Winchester did not, in fact, believe in angels or (likely then) even God. So the fact that Dean grew up remembering his mother tell him before she tucked him in that "angels were watching over him" and what we see in the final scene makes me think that even THAT is something Michael planted into her head. Maybe this was a failed attempt to instill some faith in Dean from birth, or something, but I thought that was interesting and I wonder if that was an intentional nugget in the writing or just got overlooked 🤷‍♀️ Oh! and as for Anna, if she were reprogrammed and following heaven's orders, then she wouldn't be suffering the ill-effects of time travel. When Cas travelled before in the first episode he took Dean back in time, he wasn't spitting up blood or anything. The reason Cas and Anna are in such bad shape is because neither of them has the power of Heaven behind them.

Like what most people have said, always been dissatisfied with how Anna's story ended up :(

Matt Cohen’s performance as Michael is worth the rewatch of this episode alone!

I do agree with you guys about Anna's story here being somewhat unsatisfactory. With that said I do really love the interactions between Sam and Dean and their parents, and between Dean and Michael. Nice reaction! Can't wait for the next one!

I'm glad you guys didn't watch the recap, BUT it did have a refresher on all the stuff that happened on the previous time travel episode 😅 damned if you do, dammed if you don't! 😂😂 No recap is still better IMO. As for Anna, 100% agreed. I love this episode it's up there for me just because like Greg said, the character moments. And that talk with Michael. Just some huge things for the lore of this show. But Anna got the short end of the stick. I think all those other great moments just took precedence over giving Anna a better exit, and it is very disappointing. I wish it could've been explored more, but from this point on it is a pretty packed season. They are building to a "series finale" in a sense. So her story just kinda got sacrificed for the character moments and the big plot line of this season. Also to Greg mentioning he wished for a bit more of exposition about what Mary knew, Dean says it before they time travel! Lol "She just thinks I'm some random hunter who disappeared after her dad died." Maybe it's a bit vague, but yeah he tells Sam they can't tell her the truth because of that very reason. To her he was just some hunter.

HAHAHAHA! Greg's face when Michael promised Dean he would "fix his darling Sammy" That was my favorite moment in this reaction. That was screenshot worthy :D I can agree that the Anna parts weren't the greatest, but the actress was still pretty green and it translates more in this episode than the others she was in. Knowing that, you can see it in the others, too. But this episode wasn't about the Anna of the past, so I didn't take much issue with it. She was a means to an end. This episode is about free will vs destiny, and the lengths we are willing to go to for either. Whether it's Sam willing to die to screw up Lucifer's plan, Dean's insistence that Cass send them back to the past regardless of the harm it could cause to the one angel on their side or Sam & Dean willing to never be born, which also would sacrifice Mary & John's happiness. Some of the comments have said Anna was reprogrammed in heaven, but that was never specifically made clear, and given heaven's desire for the big fight to happen, that wouldn't make sense to me, but who really knows. I always thought it was a great way to introduce Michael and the TFW concept, but he episode highlights for me were always Sam seeing his mom for the first time since he was 6 months old (those tears kill me) and all of the Winchester family moments.

I am sure I've already said how I don't like time travel stuff in sows and movies. But, spn has done episodes that I can still enjoy and aren't as bothersome to me. So I liked this episode a lot. It got the family discussions that I didn't know I needed, but I did. Seeing Sam talk to his dad, having the conversation he never got to have. Even though young John didn't know that Sam was actually talking to HIM. Sam needed to say what he did. I really enjoyed seeing young John as Michael. That was so cool. Getting a chance to see Michael talking to Dean. I didn't like what he said to Dean though. Destiny is crap. I'm with Dean on denying Destiny. And Free Will. I don't like anything that suggests there is no Free Will. When Anna first appeared in this episode I was all for it. I was glad to see her again, but wasn't happy in what it turned out to be. I didn't want Anna to turn 'bad' and then die. There is no way that Uriel would have looked the same as he did in season 4. Uriel was dead, so there is no way he'd have gone back in time. But the vessel Uriel was using is the same, but a younger version. A vessel is important for an angel.

I love this ep! Though I must agree regarding the Anna issue- I was sooo salty about her character's treatment when I first saw this! I really liked her in season 4. Though I will say this- if you remember, after being taken for "re-education" in heaven, when Cas came back he went "fullmetal douche again" to quote Dean, and he explains when he starts coming back to himself that Heaven has their methods to deal with rogue Angels. So, at least for me, I think about her turnabout as a result of her being probably tortured in heaven which twisted the way she went about things. Without spoiling anything, this issue will come up again in the future, soooo... other than that, I love the way this ep expands some on younger John and Mary and some of the lore surrounding the "chosen vessels" thing. Plus, if you remember, way back in season 1 or 2, Dean told Sam about how Mary used to tell him angels are watching over him, and that throwaway bit came full circle here, which is awesome! I love how it all comes together and how the writers found a way to use things from the start of the show 😁 another great reaction guys! Can't wait for next week's ep! It's a personal favorite!

The fact that raising toddler dean was so stressful that it made john winchester go from looking like a 27 year old to a 44 year old in 4 years when we see him in the pilot lmao (aka the actors ages) I like that this episode shows that sam and dean both have and had very different relationships with each of their parents. Greg i promise you, you will never see an angel disappear. Because theres nothing to see, they literally just vanish. They teleport. Ur just setting yourself up for disappointment lol.

Kayla Waters

Yeah, they said it as they were walking up to the house, that she thought Dean was just another hunter who disappeared when her dad died, you just talked over it. And yes the rest of the season is just delightful :p
