I'll leave the explanation to Edgaras. there are too many levels to what happend. imo Killua was partially messed up mentaly by his bro plus did what he had to do to protect Gon.

Technically everyone except for one person was supposed to pass. They were all judge to be at a lvl worthy of being a hunter, because Killua killed someone and was disqualified everyone else passes by default.

As I understood, Illumi was using pins to hide his face from Killua, since the start of the first phase . And I dont think the judge got killed, he just has fucked up face for a while , i think. As far as this ep goes , i was shocked what direction it went , first time watching it. Killua was my fav character at this point, But viewer never seen him struggle or be emotionally challenged much, And this ep just completelly reveals his insecurities and flaws. Illumi, his brother is a piece of shit. He got under his skin knowing fully ho Killua is . Killua since initial reveal that he is an assasin, never wanted this, he told us he just want to live how he wants . And this ep reinforces that . While Killua is a badass child assassin with superhuman skills, he is still 12 year old child . So he craves and wants for normalcy . It is one of the reasons why he got attached to gon so fast . It is also contrasting his own personality and outlook at life . But his brother just started poking and proding, at it shows that some of what Illumi said , Killue trully believes in that about himself. Also that hypnotic effect , was not meant to be literal i feel ., its just showing how Killua is defensles mentally and how every word from his brother feels powerful . This is the first time we seen Killua be so scared and unable to act . And part of it also I feel Killua knows that he is not worthy to be Gon's friend or have any meaningful relationship. The reason he killed bodoro, I interpreted that he just reinforces his own mental image that hes just a souless killer as a fall back defense mechanism and that he needed to get disqualified immediately no matter what. Overall really good epsode, showed layers of Killuas character and just fucked up up bringing . And just there was no actual fighting but the tension was so good . Also good call about using slower version of main theme . Overal these two back to back episodes showed me that HxH has something very unique how it approaches characters and storytelling . Tho its not as consistent as much shorter and modern shows

Lol. HxH and death note are the only shows i watch with these guys at the moment . And HxH gives me opportunities to write long rants about it , haha

The manga makes it clear that Illumi doesn't kill the judge. The pins are painful in what they do (they are painful to Illumi too, but like Killua, he has been regularly tortured to endure pain).
