I do think there is a wrong way to approach DC characters that is counter-intuitive for mainstream writing and film. With Marvel you build Spider-man around Peter Parker because Peter is the character and Spider-man is the fantasy. So you can know who Peter is and relate to who Peter is. With DC, it's the opposite. Batman is the character and Bruce Wayne is the "fantasy". Superman is the character and Clark Kent is a facade. It's who he wants to be but not who he is. So how to you write for someone that isn't grounded or relatable but represents an idea, theme, something less tangible. I think it's like adapting a story about Hercules or any of the great myths and tales. Give us the myth and the fantasy like Aquaman and Wonder Woman. They were unapologetic about the world they lived in. Not saying though that a great creative team can make a grounded or real psycological look into a DC character. Todd Phillips seems to be nailing this from early reports from the film festivals and as Nolan did with Batman give Batman is actually human at least lol. But you can contrast that with what Zac Snyder tried to do with Man of Steel. CW has been seeing a lot of success with expanding DC characters and properties with a blend of both mostly because they understand and lean into the bonkers aspects of these characters. I think trying to ground them is the hard thing to do and they don't need to be grounded...let them fly. Let them be what they are like Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Shazam which is the right direction and hopefully Bird of Prey, Suicide Squad reboot, and Joker carry it forward. BTW if you haven't heard, CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths has added Black Lightning to the cross-over for the first time. Brandon Routh will be playing Atom AND reprising the S and cape as Superman for the first time since Superman Returns. Burt Ward will be returning as an older Dick Grayson. RIP Adam West! They just announced that the legendary Kevin Conroy will finally be a live action older Bruce Wayne. The one and only voice of Batman will actually BE Batman on screen. Mark Hamill has already been in The Flash as the Trickster so we might see both Batman AND Joker's voice actors from the iconic Animated Series together on the screen. Maybe as Batman and Joker or at the very least maybe Batman and Trickster! Unconfirmed rumors of Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum from Smallville coming in for it as well as Linda Carter from the Wonder Woman TV show. And they already have the old Flash, John Welsey Shipp. 5 hour long fangasm event to salute Arrow off into it's last episodes.

2021-07-15 05:06:35 Damn haha. I gotta admit, just reading your description of the crossover here sounds pretty damn exciting. Kinda making me miss the days of watching Black Lightning haha. Really cool to hear that they're potentially getting all these people back. Seems like more than ever before, what with all the universe-crossing these days, the potential for people reprising roles in fun ways is bigger than ever! Kinda hoping they just pull everybody in haha. And I quite enjoyed your thoughts about DC on the big-screen. I think that's the perfect distinction about the hero being the fantasy for the Marvel characters and the everyday person being the fantasy for many of DC's characters. I would love to see DC really recognize & embrace that aspect as an overarching flavor of their universe as a means of setting them apart. And I think it would be nice, too, if DC went for something a little less massively-shared-universe-constant-crossover, buuut that's just me 😅 long been fascinated by the disparity between DC on TV & DC on the big screen in the recent years as well. Especially with all I've heard over time about all the different Arrowverse shows. Aside from the ringer that is currently the Flash movie, though, I think we've got similar hopes for this next phase of the DCEU. Now they just gotta hit their marks with these next few 😅😅
