Content

We're continuing with the idea of presenting more audio only content for our patrons, and this is the first in a hopeful series we're calling The Sylvie Interview Podcast. We're taking on important topics and principles of Thailand's Muay Thai and discussing them through an Interview format. We hope you enjoy!

You can also watch the interview on YouTube. Watch it here. The video versions are public, patrons only get the podcast versions (see how to get the podcast at the bottom of this post).

publicly on YouTube. Watch it here

We keep exploring more and more ways of taking deep dives into Thailand's Muay Thai and discussing or documenting it in ways that others might not, in addition to the Muay Thai Library preserve the legacy project. These discussions come out of our engagement with the art and the sport.

More Study

There are a few Muay Thai Library sessions brought up if you want to study further on the subject of Muay Mua, they are below:

My secondary realization of what Muay Mua was happened while I was filming with Arjan Yai:

#113 Arjan Yai Muangsupan - Golden Age Forms & Dynamics (119 min) watch it here

Arjan Yai gives a keyhole into basic Golden Age forms of Muay Thai that have not all been preserved over time. He was a padman and trainer in the famed Sor. Ploenjit gym when the great Kaensak was Fighter of Year twice. He still trains stadium Muay Thai fighters. In this session he starts from the ground up in a beautiful documentation.

and with Panomtuanlek:

#131 Panomtuanlek Hapalang - The Secret of Tidal Knees (100 min) watch it here

Called Mr. Tidal Knees, Panomtuanlek completes the trinity of Muay Khao greatness documented from the famed Hapalang gym. This is such a rare and beautiful session, perhaps Top 10 in the entire Library. Panomtuanlek teaches his base of movement and postures which allowed him to become one of the most dominant Muay Khao fighters of the Golden Age.

Karuhat has been the ideal representation of NOT Muay Mua, his latest session:

#111 The Karuhat Rosetta Stone 7 - The Secrets of the Matador (83 min) watch it here

Karuhat is the most documented Golden Age legend in history, thanks to the sum of all the filming and commentary we've been able to do with him. This session though provide the key to understanding all the other sessions. And there is a very special focus on his particular Golden Kick.

you can find a list of all of Karuhat's sessions in the Library here. He was one of the least "muay mua" fighter in Thailand's history. Studying him really helps.

Sagat teaches the principle of "organization", helpful sessions involving organization. Organization helps you move away from Muay Mua.

#26 Sagat Petchyindee 1 - Explosive Power (57 min) watch it here

One of the great fighters in the history of Thailand, and the inspiration of the "Street Fighter" video game character, Sagat is like no other. Here he teaches how power has to come out of the ribs, and your frame, taking the shortest distance to your target, making sure your feet are constantly "organized".

#38 Sagat Petchyindee 2 - Maximum Damage (61 min) watch it here

Such an anticipated session, part 2 of Sagat Petchyindee, the inspiration of the Sagat Street Fighter character. It's hard to believe, but he's even better in real life. In this session his continues to teach his "stay in your frame" method of bringing maximum efficiency and damage to striking.

Pop Praditbatuga

One of my favorite fighters to watch in Thai Fight is Kitti Sorjordanrayong with his elbow attacks. However, Thai former champs and coaches I know describe his style as often being "Mua." They say his relentless attack although admittedly "Mun" to watch is often characterized by him throwing them faster than he can think. They also believe the new three-round format with forward-pressing brawl requirements is more conducive to fighters being "Mua." New audience (although many may not be well versed in Muay Thai) may actually embrace the scenario that's sometimes "Mua." This is the antithesis of Ruup Muay of the Golden Era.

In defense pf the 3 round Mua format, the Mua style gets some love and action. But it's a short and limited defense because styles that aren't already that have to adjust to it.
