Sand Krakens of Mia: The Desert Predators of Escalia
Though boneless like their maritime cousins, Sand Krakens are not related to them. Their elongated, grasping tentacles earned them this name. Inhabiting the barren deserts of Southern Mia within the Ytrean Republic, these creatures glide through towering sand dunes using a thin layer of air around their coarse bodies, accompanied by a constant humming. This vibration sets the surrounding sand into motion, giving it water-like properties. Relatively blind, Sand Krakens rely on their acute sense of vibration and a unique magical awareness, making them extraordinarily aggressive and swift hunters. Their prey primarily includes small animals and unsuspecting merchant caravans.
Uniquely, Sand Krakens have no maximum size. As long as they have nutrients, they continue to grow; without sustenance, they shrink. Hence, a Sand Kraken's size is always a reflection of the available food. Encountering one as large as a house or a ship is rare, yet it happens. Such behemoths consume endlessly until no food remains. There are rumors of Sand Krakens that grew so large they could no longer move, lying in wait to snap at anything within reach. During the times of the Ashquah, tales were told of Inrasi-Inrota, a demi-god guardian seated on the path to the underworld. Human sacrifices were regularly offered to appease him, preventing him from leaving his post, consuming the faithful Ashquahs, and potentially triggering the end of the world. Strange folk, those Ashquahs – perhaps their peculiar ways explain their extinction.
Quest Ideas
This monstrous being makes a fantastic setpiece for your game! Imagine it as a trap, its tentacles forming a deceptive sand-covered canopy. An unsuspecting traveler stepping on it could plummet into the maw or be ensnared by its limbs. Or picture a thrilling quest where a magical artifact swallowed by one of these colossi must be retrieved. The adventurers have to stun the behemoth to climb down its throat and search its insides for the coveted item. Disgusting? Absolutely! But undoubtedly an epic experience for any gaming table.
