I'm actually pretty pleased with the quality of the final YouTube upload! The episode is 2k, but I uploaded it 4k because that's the only way to keep YouTube from blurring out all those little bits.

But! If you want a non-streamed version, here you go!

Right click, save the link:
2GB version [recommended]
And if you reallllly want EVERY bit of that grain overlay:
7GB version

Subtitles [english]

Also a Torrent Magnet Link for the 7GB version, including a bonus Relaxation Video for anyone going through those ol' stressful times (originally I hadn't realized I could host the videos on google drive without violating any TOS and getting flagged, so I was going to be pushing the torrent option, but apparently the ol' google can take it :P) Copy and paste entire thing into browser:

=====

Beyond that, stuff's going well! After working on a project for so long, it feels legitimately disorienting to finally have it out there, but folk's responses have been really nice; it's been a fun couple days :)

I'll be mostly posting breakdowns and such for the next week or two; I've got lots of WIP stuff and cutting-room-floor footage I think could be fun to talk about.

It's glorious!!! When's ep 2? ;)

Anonymous

How long did this take you to complete? -I mean from the first default cube that you removed to the final adjustment you made. Must have taken YEARS for it to be this darn polished!

This is a beautiful piece of art and culture Ian! It’s incredible and inspiring!!

Try: magnet:?xt=urn:btih:bfcba3c892759ed2765a89398c5faaa47d9f812a&dn=DYNAMO%20DREAM%20ep1%20Salad%20Mug I think Patreon tried to convert Ian's link into a URL and messed up some of the characters (hopefully it doesnt do that to me)

You literally set a new goal in my life with this, thank you

On youtube i didn't even realize there were particles floating in the first shot. It's really worth the download! Thank you Ian!

Great job, Ian. Thanks for continuing to inspire so many of us.

It's 21min but it's taken me at least an hour to play it back slowly and stop on all the frames that have interesting greebles. If it were a food, it'd be an MRE but delicious. Incredible work!

Davide Bertolini

I'll be seeding the magnet, but most of all posting the Youtube link all over, everyone should see this and it should be monetised

Jack_Wolfe

You really do make me wonder about your data storage solutions.

I'd love to see the file management/structure. How you organise camera footage, shots, scenes, and the blender files amongst it. For a big task I imagine organisation is crucial!

Anonymous

I'd love to see how you manage the scene itself in Blender too and dealing with render times.

Anonymous

I absolutely LOVE the soundtrack. I heard some motif from the Episode 5 VFX breakdown song. That "Have you seen the sky" song.

Anonymous

sincerely appreciate the relaxation break :p

I've seen a bunch of the scenes previously in your tutorials and whatnot and I have to tell you that knowing how the magician does the trick does not diminish the awe experienced when seeing it performed so well and instead of feeling like reruns it felt like nostalgia. Following the story through all of that was inspiring AF and reminded me that despite your blend-guru-hood, your calling is as a filmmaker, and a damn good one

Anonymous

Can't wait to see it in high definition. Tried the drive link, but Google was not having it. Torrent it is then.

Anonymous

Huge Congratulations on this release Ian, what an achievement. You are a true inspiration for all of us, and you generously sharing your process and progress has helped me immensely in my work as a concept artist for games, film and TV. Best regards/

I know I'm a little late to the party, but where can I see the original Dynamo episodes? This episode was so amazing I've got no words! Not shockingly amazing since my wife and I joke about how amazing your stuff is all the time. I told her the other day that if there was a feed with you making stuff and just jabbering on about it while you did it that I could probably hang for 12 hour shifts watching it every day, she said that she doesn't have any idea about any of the stuff you are talking about and she'd be down to watch it with me! She says she has to put on headphones whenever I'm watching your tutorials and videos while she's working because she can't not listen to whatever you're talking about (#samesies). So anyway, let me know where I can see the other episodes since Google is failing me when I look (or I'm just failing), and whenever you want to get that feed going let me know, cuz I'll be glued to it...

Hi Jan, I've always been a big fan of your work, concepts, and attitude in general, and still am, BUT I must say I didn't enjoy this episode as much as I expected (still forced fam and friends to watch it anyway). The thing is that at times it looks more of a VFX showreel, rather than an actual story. There's so many details and implications (what one can learn about this world from a glimpse) that my brain just couldn't handle it. It feels like there's enough material for a whole season in a single episode - environment-wise, story-wise not quite so. Maybe it's the fact that it took you so long to finish it, and that your mind once it gets started never stops diving into new details, but every shot has too much to it, it's like having to drink a whole glass of the finest wine in one go. It was overwhelming. Kind of like one of those hypertechnical bands that play supercomplicated music that musicians love and regular people just "don't get" (and I see the Blender community is loving every bit of this episode). But you never came across as one of those virtuosos that just want to show off their skills, rather wanting to have the VFX serve the story. And, my humble opinion, it feels as if you overdid with the guitar solos in this one. Just my humble opinion. Looking forward for your next work. Best.

I don't use blender but your patreon is worth every penny! Every time I watch one of your videos it undoes years of feature film experience and methodology. Blows my mind every time! 🤝

Davide Bertolini

I understand your point of view but I feel like most of this episode serves the purpose of establishing the world and getting the story started, so my guess is that future episodes will be less world-building and more story-driven. Maybe in a few years when you'll be able to watch the whole thing in one sitting it will make more sense. The whole hyper-detailed background thing is just his style though, that's not going away :)

Like most everyone else I really enjoyed this. It took a few viewings to work out what what I really thought about it as a piece of ‘cinema’ because it’s so personal to me. There’s definitely a ‘been involved in the project’/ personal emotional investment factor to account for. This definitely makes for a finer quality to the experience. That discounted it’s still a bunch of fun. The phone call missile scene is the highlight for me, for it’s humour ( that floating cash register proves quite a comedic find ), tension, the geographical context and emotional connection. That said all the live scenes work nicely, the only thing that ‘bugged’ me was I didn’t feel ‘Cass’ had line of sight to the assassin, and that combined with her stupor presented a ‘is she psychic?’ question that would have been better asked by her line being before the window shot or with her eyes closed. The sheer quantity of fx shots worked for me bar one thing which I can see is a difficult balance. I got geographically lost. I think the key to this is strong landmarks which I can retro analyse that you include but they escaped my casual viewing. Most obviously problem causing (for me), the location she leaves to visit Tacoburger and the opening location of ‘home’ didn’t immediately strike me as one and the same. I believe a stronger sense of home and relative location will gel the story and world together for a more powerful experience. That’s got my mind thinking more still about this challenge, another Hubert inspired lesson. If I look at it overall for exactly what it is I think it’s great fun for it’s story and creative vision and a superb platform for you to build from. It’s an awesomely effective 20 minutes of establishing a believable alternative world. We all know you are capable of far more in the future because of what we know you learned from the experience and what you’ve shown us about the technical difficulties of filming then discovering you could have done something ‘more’ months (years?) later in post! This will always be so as you continue to grow and show so many people that your art ‘output’ is a fraction of what you are capable of. Yet another priceless Hubert lesson. Never forget how valuable this experience is for us patrons. In summary, great stuff Ian, for now and even more the future (where it’s clear your head already is). Lots of love in these not simple to get by, never mind prosper, times.

Yeah! It's called A Million Different Words :) There are some lyrics on the Dynamo wiki, and I've got some chords transcribed. Not sure how accurate either the chords or lyrics are. You want 'em?

Anonymous

I liked it because it was similar in style to the old Dynamo episodes, which I already love so much and I never had that "Been involved in" kind of bias for that. I think he's just an auteur, doing his thing. As Dafoe would put it. So yeah, probably psychic. Not at all a surprising thing to find in the world of Dynamo though, I'd say. We've never seen anything before that is directly spelled out as being "psychic", but if you watched the old episodes, I think it would make more sense. But still be confusing, a bit. :P I also feel like Cassy wasn't supposed to have a line of sight to the assassin. I think she has some sort of mysterious power, or knows a thing or two about the area. She seemed mysterious to me, like something that will be explained later on. Also, I am pretty sure the place she leaves to go to the Tacoburger stand is NOT her home. She says "See you, Sophie!" not "See you, Cassy!" and the person reading the book in the same room as her is not even the same actress as the person playing Cassy. I think she's meant to still be at Waterworks, but in an area where you can relax as a worker, get dressed and such, and the train ride is what's supposed to take her home.

Thank you, that makes sense Lukas. Hopefully my post includes the fact that it created uncertainty for me not that I read it ‘this way’ or ‘that’ and needed it to be one or another. That uncertainty is a powerful storytelling force.

Anonymous

Thanks for the relaxing time Ian! I think you need to hear about a free software called "HandBrake", it literally compressed your relaxation video to 34 mb without any loss of quality.

Anonymous

Lukas’s post led me to watch once more and be reminded of something I’d neglected to mention. Episode 1 has that quirky feel from Dynamo and the worlds of Brazil, 12 Monkeys, Fifth Element, 1984 etc. But it has a lightness that I thought was brilliant, the ‘dystopia’ or ‘weirdness’ never got oppressive which makes the character pieces great, giving them the space to be ‘real’. The meeting with the ‘head’ is the best example of this, this could easily have broken that magic but once again it was handled with a brilliant lightness. This balance is undoubtably hard to achieve and quite rare to find in my experience. It’s a great setup for what you have planned for us in future episodes.

The youtube 4K video and sound mix looked great on my home theatre. In fact, better than most commercial 4K projects out there - way less grain, crisp as a sunny day.

Anonymous

Thank you. It's Good Motive to me!

Dr sponge

That’s cool I used to use that to put edited vids on ig before it was natively supported I didn’t know it could do at as well

Anonymous

Incredible work dude! I'm sure you've probably covered this elsewhere but how are you handling volumetrics in these scenes? Every time I try to use actual volumetric shaders I get so much noise and my renders become exponentially longer

Anonymous

Definitely. Ian has said before that he is influenced by the movie The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Seventh Dimension.

Anonymous

This is really awesome. The amount of detail is incredible. You should also release the soundtracks

Anonymous

I think you just plug an emission shader into the volume.

Anonymous

Yeah, it’s great. So many disto future films create a world that crush the characters or only leave space for swashbuckling stereotypes, DD has aced it here.

Anonymous

I’ll give that a shot, typically I use a principaled volume shader in the volume socket of a cube or into the world volume socket.

Anonymous

extra fun to see so many things applied from the tutorials in a story. I LOVE all the little humor that made it like "Yellow text" sticker

Anonymous

Oh lord, I’m gonna have to watch this a few times. Thank you for your years of hard work and for going the extra mile to share your knowledge with all of us through the tutorials. So inspiring, holy crap.

Anonymous

Thanks Ian, this is amazing!!! congrats

It's been really good, amazing graphics, and man, talk about world-building. I want to visit this world! Oh, I let my young kids watch this they were good until the end, and then they got scared, haha. Looking forward (along with the rest of the world) to episode 2!

Phil South

I only just freeze framed on the flash frame at the beginning. It's a whole little world in itself.
