The Hyperbole isn't a good idea, but it's one I've wanted to do for a while, so I kind of want to put some effort into it?

That said, I'm in a tricky zone right now, where I'm designing different characters, and I don't want to spend too much time on them, but I also want them all to be distinct.  I think my aim should be to have a few "hero" combatants, then fill the rest out with slightly more general folks- maybe I can design a more ambiguous character/vehicle tonight, that I can just swap out textures on.

All the riders are obviously based off of the photoscanned folks I uploaded a while ago- though I'm hoping it's not too obvious. I also want to do a few fresh scans of some practically-designed costumes, once I can zip off to the thrift store.

I've already tried throwing some mocap data from the Rokoko suit on them, and it works so well.  I think I'm going to snag the mocap data, then animate the bikes/camera to match.

I really wasn't trying to do a Twisted Steel menagerie of crazy folks, but I think I dig it.

These are fantastic! Like how the last two are still student drivers haha

Anonymous

Wow Ian, the stuff you come up with is inspired. I wish my brain had such awesomely weird stuff rolling around in it!

IanHubert

Ahaha, yeah I guess it's a little prominent on both (The Brutalist is definitely no student- he's an old timer) At the time I thought I was making So Many bumper stickers, but I have so many repeats I think I need to make another batch.

Anonymous

Damn!! These are so cool, Ian! Dylan2.0 is my favorite. Any chance we could eventually get some sort of hard surface tutorial to make stuff like that? :D

Anonymous

Hey Ian, so I’ve been trying to create characters for a family member’s project and I found a few videos that were really helpful lol idk if this work flow is relevant to anything you’re doing but I found them useful... Frankly it’s probably a lot quicker to photoscan someone but if you’re looking for a higher level of detail then maybe this would be helpful? Character creator https://youtu.be/yjY0uWE0LpQ Face builder https://youtu.be/5WH7s-IPIeM Marvelous design clothing https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp1G9mIBskI Ps these characters look amazing and I’ve been so stoked for the hyperbole scene since you released the animating a handheld camera tut on YouTube lol

Anonymous

I think the only weird thing about the Hyperbole scene I find weird is you put tire track marks on the racing track, and everyone's vehicles are flying. :)

IanHubert

HAH!!! Hahaha, that didn't occur to me at all. Maybe they rent the course out to Regular Car Racing weekday afternoons.

IanHubert

AH! These are some great links, thank you! Super cool seeing how to use Marvelous Designer with Blender! I've gotta do more with face builder. I was so stoked to scan all these people and have all these mix-and-match models, but it's been hard the past few months, haha Yeah, photoscan has it's pros, but in the end you just have a big textured mesh blob; none of it knows "what it is", not fingers or eyes or a mouth or anything, so there's only so much you can really do with it (well- I guess you can rig the fingers). Doing a more legit workflow like this would be really cool some day :D Thanks again!

If this ends up being on screes in-world only, can we get a solo release like Crab Battle? I have a feeling this is going to end up being ridiculous (-ly good). It's also really cool seeing your development in real time instead of getting a finished episode and wondering how long it took to make.

IanHubert

Oh! Sure! I'm a little embarrassed though, because from a modeling standpoint It's like 99% just beveling and insetting, but I can talk through some stuff!!

IanHubert

Yeah!! Totally going to make a little standalone thing for this- hopefully like 45 seconds? I guess I COULD just have a bit in the episode where we randomly watch a pub television for a minute to see it all, but I always went weirdly out of my way to do that with the scene I used for the Dynamo Dream teaser, haha, but I'll probably just have a small piece of it going in the background. VERY excited to hear what Impossible Acoustic does with the sound design :D

Anonymous

My heart is yearning for a spin-off series about Hyperbole :D

IanHubert

Me toooo- it's seriously the absolute wrong way for me to ever finish a friggin' Dynamo episode but I want to follow this motivation for a minute, haha, quick vehicles and explosions is like the opposite of all the slow environmental dolly shots I've been doing for the past couple years.

Anonymous

Inspiring as always. Thank you!

Anonymous

I'd love to see an outlandish rider on a old Silo. 4x bigger than all the other contestants.

Anonymous

Man... I thought I was being productive lately but you are straight crushing it creatively.

Anonymous

am in love with RANGER RAZOR wanna ride one...

Anonymous

Hey Ian ! Interesting ! Maybe there's something that could help you for your problem of "scaling" the process of creating and animating different not-so-detailed unique persons for your hyperbowl scenes : check this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AQsoA_B1_I Basically if this works well for you, what you need instead of photoscanned stuff is just to get 3 pictures of some folks (front, back, side), I guess it should be much easier to obtain that given that all that is needed is a camera, or even a phone ;)

Anonymous

This is awesome! It sometimes gets tedious when you have to work within the constraints of your own universe that you made, but every once and a while you can make a half-naked guy ride around on a cement tube shooting people, and when you can I say go for it!

Anonymous

Man that taxi véhicule is a beauty! Why can't we have flying cars like they have promised us in 1988... Not even an overboard.

Anonymous

Once this is done, can we also get a mech fight vs Hyperbowl sport where the old guard mechs take sword swings at the jet bikes flying around overhead?

Anonymous

THE BRUTALIST, not really going to win and he is heavy and too slow so make his purpose just destroying the other racers to win, give him a hammer or smth hehe, btw fantastic as always

Anonymous

YES!!! Student driver hahahahahahaaha

Anonymous

The Brutalist! YES

Anonymous

How many more months do you think we'll have to wait for this episode?

Anonymous

Congrats... ian reached 3000 patreon which is epic..

IanHubert

The Hyperbole episode should ideally be done pretty quick here (I'm trying to make like a 1 minute short or something, that could just stand alone or be used on a background monitor in a bar or something :P), but the big Dynamo episode will probably still be a couple months- and honestly I have no idea how long sound will take. They fast, and good, but this is a hefty episode.

Anonymous

I hope you share the big cheese with us and I would love to use it in a scifi themed music video of mine

IanHubert

YEAH! I've been trying to figure out what his weapon is. Either he just rams folks, or, like, a sledgehammer, for sure! Hahaha

IanHubert

Yeah! I think I can upload all of these in a bit! I want to model a few more of them first.

Anonymous

having a guy called The Brutalist ride around on a concrete drainage pipe is INSPIRED. can't wait to see the episode, and grats on the 3k!

Anonymous

Ok but this is absolutely amazing! I’m loving the pod racing/arena fight mix!! This stuff literally is the best. I would totally watch a full on stand alone Hyperbole battle for hours LOL!!

Anonymous

OMG! Is wish I had the time do do the stuff you do Ian, keep it up! PS: Maybe if you have a long modeling session you could stream it on twitch / YouTube! (Spoilers might happen though)

Anonymous

As always great stuff. Congrats on reaching 3K patrons BTW.

Kai Christensen

I love the play on words with "Hyperbole" being both a mix between a race and the Super Bowl, but also being, you know, over the top (thus a hyperbole). You come up with that yourself?

IanHubert

If by "come up with" you mean, "mispronounce hyperbole for literally half my life", then yessssss I did haha

Anonymous

Yes, amazing to see it grow! On to the 10k I say! Let's all keep sharing with the world the joy people can get from Ian's 'behind the scenes' content. Know anyone that could benefit from his content? Tell them about the experience! Let's help him set up a well funded indie studio, just imagine what could be possible then.. #daydreaming

Dylan2.0 kinda reminds me of Kojima Production's Ludens mascot. Also i love the different vehicle designs. Favourite one might, despite the simplicity of it, be The Brutalist!

Anonymous

Ranger Razor is hands down the coolest of the bunch.

Anonymous

Im gonna go with the Big Cheese

Anonymous

Razor Ranger is going to lose his hat if it isn't glued to his head!

This next episode of Dynamo is going to be insane with all of this you've been sharing!!!!! From Kaitlin tripping out on a train, to canal boats, to cyberpunk Broil burger joints, to Hyperbole racing....!!!!! AHHH!!!!! It's going to be mind blowing!!!!! I can't wait!!!!!!

Kai Christensen

I'm genuinely interested in seeing a video you making one of these. The modeling on Big Cheese and Dylan2.0's bikes is pretty awesome, would love to see all the insets and extrusions and texturing techniques you used.

Anonymous

Can we sent our model as well . so maybe you can use them in Dynamo 😁😁😁😁😁

Anonymous

I personally was in this biz since 1994. Many twists and turns since then, but on of the great things about our modern world is open source tools with talented coders, pipeline engineers, business minds, and both techical and concepts artists backing up all of us.

Anonymous

HAPPY 3000 PATRONS!!!!

Anonymous

Also, that thing you posted on Instagram stories looks so cool! SURF THE HYPERBOLE!

Anonymous

Did you name it Hyperbole meaning for it to be the same as exaggeration or was that a lucky accident? 😂

Anonymous

these rider designs are fucking insane!!

Anonymous

"Gentlemen, start youuur enginneessss...!"

Anonymous

Not sure if you have someone to do the sound design but I’d totally be down to do it man... free of course out of good fun lol

Kai Christensen

He works with the guys at Impossible Acoustic in Seattle, so yeah he’s got it covered :) I’m sure the offer is appreciated though.

Anonymous

That’s Cool, I didn’t know that :) good to know he has a sound team working for him... I do a lot of freelance sound work, also do it for my channel Forlorn Foundry, not a professional by any means, but seeing stuff that he makes always gets me going lol

If you plan on making more of these please consider calling one 'Road Nangler'.
