Hah! So- making tutorials for physics-based stuff is always a little daunting because it invariably comes down to "just tweak stuff till it looks right for your specific situation".

With that in mind, I also wanted to put out some pre-made video textures that I think can be super useful for environmental scenes!

Download Dust/Bugs video files and Blend

You can use them in AE or blender or whatever :)

I recommend using the "Import Images as Planes" add-on included in Blender, and setting up the material nodes like this (maybe check "Cyclic"- all the videos loop):

(you can replace the translucent shader with an emission shader if you want the dust/moths to ignore lighting and just glow a little for maximum visibility (and shorter render times, I believe).

I'm going to be using this in part 3 of the "Making a whole shot" video, but wanted to focus on it a bit more.

this asset showing error while download. can't be download securely.

IanHubert

I promise you they all download securely, though, I just haven't transferred over all the old assets from years ago.

For even more convenience, you can zero out the gravity in the field weights setting of the particle system, rather than the global gravity. This way, it will work if you have other objects that do need gravity, and it will also carry over when appended to a new file, so you don't need to turn the gravity off each time

Awesome! :D

IanHubert

AH! Thank you very much!! I thought there was a way, but couldn't find it! Updated the blend file :D

What's it say about Ian's skill that I thought the video thumbnail was a render (& can't be the only one :D )

Your endless creativity never fails to impress! Love this method

YouTube video compression be like: help ._.

i think i will stick with video textures....are you into manta flow or flip fluids.....what are your thoughts on that ....

Anonymous

and if you actually make those hair things in a different particle system with some force field tweaks, it looks even more realistic, I've been working on it lately.

Anonymous

Youtube compression did not like this one.

These little details add so much realism. Like your lazy tutorial about moths- I never thought of using them before, now I want to add them to everything. With bugs this small though, is it better using video textures as opposed to using particles directly?

IanHubert

Honestly I'm not totally sure about all the pros and cons. I think just for convenience sake I'll probably just use the video textures most of the time, but it can also clutter stuff up (and confuse cycles, I think) having a ton of near-invisible planes in your scene.

oh man this method is so nice and simple!

When adding the videos as planes I'm having trouble making the black into transparent. Can someone post the whole node set up for this to work? I cant see it on the video. Thank you so much!!!

If you are rendering in Eevee, make sure the blend mode is Alpha Blend: Material Tab -> Settings -> Blend Mode = Alpha Blend

Hey ian, the download link isnt working probably since your site is down. Is there any other way to get these files?

IanHubert

The link still works! It's just a bit funky. Did you try right clicking, then "Save link as"? I've started posting assets on my google drive, since that seems to be easier for folks, but these old ones should still work :D

Hey Ian, would love to use these in a project but I am having the same issue and am unable to download. Is there another way to get the files? Thank you!

IanHubert

And you tried right clicking on the link and saving? Cause it just worked for me! I should figure out a less confusing method for these old files, though, yeah

Don't know how I missed your reply to the comment above, my bad! Got the files, thanks so much!!
