Say Hallo to project Chicago!

That's right, finally an Alpina on the channel!
2008 Alpina B7, black on black, 128k miles, loaded, Texas car all its life with a clean title.

I was not looking for a BMW with a famously "reliable" N62 engine, but it rather found me. A nice viewer from Chicago, Antonio, emailed me and said he has a broken but running & driving Alpina B7. They were always out of my price range so I wasn't expecting it would work out but then he responded the asking price is $4k. That makes it obtainable and pretty sure the cheapest B7 in the world currently.

Obviously the car has issues, it had a minor accident in the front and the bumper was poorly repaired. The check engine light came on and the owner took it to some independent shop where they found misfire and valvetronic codes, coolant leaks and quoted him 11k to repair it! They quoted him for a fully timing chain job which makes no sense based on the codes and pretty sure not the problem. No blue smoke out of the exhaust when cold starting or when revving the engine so the valve seals are likely okay for now.

Anyway, he had it for around 2 years and in mid-2020 he relocated to Chicago. He didn't want to deal with the repairs and he offered it first to me before posting it online. After hearing everything, I also received a video of the engine running/walk around, I quickly decided to buy it. Didn't negotiate as I felt it was priced very fairly and the seller is a stand-up guy. Honest and very easy to deal with.

The car was located in a suburb of Chicago, Lemont and as luck would have it, I have a close friend that lives in Chicago and has a trucking company in Lemont, 7 miles from the seller. He met the seller this past Sunday, confirmed everything is as described, paid the guy and drove it back to his company HQ where it will be stored until it's picked up and shipped to Germany.

I didn't know much about E66 Alpina B7 so I started researching and man, what an impressive machine. Supercharged beast with 500 PS, 698 Nm of torque, 0 to 100 km/h in around 5 seconds, bespoke Akrapovic exhaust, Alpina block, forged crankshaft and high strength Mahle pistons.
As it can be seen on the window sticker, it was $117,075 back in 2008 and I bought it for $4k 13 years later. Pretty crazy.
I know looks of E66 are hate it or love, but with Alpina rims and other goodies, I actually quite like it. I just wish it was blue and not black, I hate black cars as they are pain to keep clean but can't pick a color on a used car.

The reason I bought it is, well the paragraph above, but also for content. Hoovie had one that he sent to the junkyard and it had pretty good view counts so I'm hoping it'll attract a bigger crowd. Plus, it's something different that I've never done before and will be fun for me to work on it as well.

No big plans for now, I'm doing some research and getting a general idea of what might be causing the codes but we'll see once it arrives. It's probably going to be a few months before it arrives but I'll keep you posted here.

Please keep this to yourself as I don't plan to unveil it any time soon.

Hope you are excited about it! I can't wait to see it in person.

P.S. Alex from Legit Street Cars emailed me recently that he might be coming to Europe and wanted to see if I'm up for a collab (of course!). I told him about the Alpina and if he wants to collab on this one, make a video on it or something. Waiting to hear back from him.

OH MY GOD I AM SO EXCITED! An Alpina! And the B7 is such a lovely example! I have lusted after one most of my life, and since I'll likely never have the means to own one, this is the next best thing!!!! Can't wait for this series!!!

Anonymous

Hell yeah, this thing will be insane 👏 cant wait

Anonymous

Excellent , love it.

Anonymous

YES! My favorite “modern” B7! 🙂

Anonymous

Have you seen hoovies video on alpina b7? Cant remember exactly what was wrong but supercharger was broken in some way and parts from alpina had astronomical prices to them, and basically had to have all new supercharger installed. Ill link that video if i find it. But congratulations, i think one of the most badass looking and sounding alpinas

Anonymous

OMG, is that Hoovies Alpina?

Great!!! Can't wait for the start of project Chicago :)

Anonymous

I do like an Alpina.

Anonymous

The facelift e66 really isn’t bad and actually looks particularly good in Alpina clothing.

Anonymous

Nice buy! Cant wait for the great content🙌

Anonymous

"Coming up!! We will see if this $300 Alpina is as much of a shit show as it looks to be!"

Anonymous

I had a strange sense it was an E66 Alpina B7 not gonna lie.

Anonymous

This will be a good one. I have been looking for a e65 project for myself.

Anonymous

Nice 👌

Anonymous

I am so happy that you are now a full time restorer, can’t wait to see all your future content 🤩😬😊

Wau collab with Legit street cars is awesome news. very excited to this, and also to this B7. 😍😍😍😍

Nismo

Sweeeeeeet! Very cool news! Lucky to have friends near a lot of your project cars. A collab with LegitStreetCars would be awesome! Big fan of him as well. Can't wait for an update on that.

Anonymous

I think that Bangle-era designs aged pretty well, in the end. Looking forward to this one!

Anonymous

This is going to be Awesome. Really looking forward to this one….

Dennis Papadopoulos

In my mind you should stick to yourself or some good youtubers who don't click bait all the time...(for example AMMONYC 💯💯) You have the best automotive channel in the entire platform if you ask me. Please stick to it and don't collab with "lesser" youtubers. My opinion as always. 💯🔥

Anonymous

Alpina 🤘this looks like a fun project. Does Hans have a cousin who is also in the Mafia?

Anonymous

Sick project!

Anonymous

Wild stuff! Congratulations!

Anonymous

Wow, just wow! Thought the other day day that you missed a Alpina i your fleet

Anonymous

Very hyped on this project! Actually love the n62, would love to own a 550i e60! Maybe in the future.

Anonymous

Whoa! So rad. Awesome!

Anonymous

a colab with Alex will be awesome!

MichiJim

Marvelous Supercar! Can’t wait to see the results of your work. Your YouTube channel is the absolute best for straight up “how to” work on BMW’s. Be careful of those with whom you collaborate, just my opinion of course. Your content is straight up great without an excess of self back slapping. Thanks, as always, for the marvelous production work and excellent “how to” content.

Anonymous

My 2 favorite youtubers doing a collab build?? No way!!

Anonymous

Looking forward to to you bringing the B7 back to life. I’m sure you’ve seen Hoovies experiences with the B7 and the car ninja? https://youtu.be/Y4qewQkYTTs

Alpina took one of the most ugliest BMWs and turned it into a badass automobile. Absolutely adore the B7, especially interested to see how the supercharger works! From my understanding, I don’t think BMW have ever put a supercharger on a car (apart from the minis). Can’t wait for this series :)

Jose Martinez

Wow, an Alpina, this is going to be awesome! Don’t worry about views, Hoovie gets views because he buys the worst of the worst for his hooptie fleet. You’ll get plenty of views with this beauty! Can’t wait to see what you do with it!👍🏻👍🏻

Anonymous

I'm so fuckin stoked!!!!!!

Anonymous

Awesome. As a long time e65 owner I am very interested to see how you deal with this project! On the potential collab; I really like Alex; he actually does a lot of wrenching and is also entertaining. But I also like Sreten's purist "man fix machine" with a hint of humour approach. Could be interesting to see how a collab would work...

Anonymous

Yes!!! Very Good Proyect! I was wanting Hoovies finished that car, i liked it. Hope yours not that bad, but you can lower the cost by doing it yourself!! Wating for that video without Patience! Lucky 4k peanuts, but unreliable, i am soo sad for BMW downgrading in quality soo much over the years, that now i think 3 times before buying one!! Keep it coming!

m539restorations

Awesome to see such a great response! Thank you, fellas! I'm stoked too and we'll keep you posted on the progress.

Holy Thor, project is chasing project😲😲😱😱🤩🤩

Anonymous

Like most of your projects I look forward to living through you restoring this thing. All that is missing option-wise is a leather upper dashboard/doorcards. Could be worth searching for a complete full-leather set in the states where it is easier to find and cheaper. Though i suppose an E65 dashboard would be literal hell to remove in comparison to the older cars you usually work on.

Anonymous

Finally an N62, been waiting for ages for one of these.

Anonymous

Congratulations Sreten! Can’t wait to see the transformation!

Anonymous

That engine is insane! Another great find, another greats series to come! mmmmm Autobahn good times. The Akrapovic exhaust is gonna sound ballistic @ 300kph and with a 'hint' of induction noise thrown in for good measure, it is a sure fire recipe for success.

Anonymous

I dislike these vehicles. Alot. Having said that, I'm really, REALLY looking forward to you restoring this one. Good Luck!

Anonymous

Oh, and a collaboration with Alex? All the better!

Anonymous

If anyone can make 1Mk views out of the sheer contradiction, of loving an E38 and buying an N62, it's you! We have faith in you! And, your skills.

Anonymous

holy poop, an Alpina and a chance to meet Alex. I am so happy for you my dude

Anonymous

That's super cool, I follow Alex as well. Looking forward to that, muy bueno!

Anonymous

Mannnnnnnn. This is fantastic. Completely unexpected. I think it will definitely keep you busy. As a viewer, I love this!!! 😄😄

Magnus von Brömsen

Finally a E66 :) I love this car - nothing beats it on a long drive

Anonymous

hoovie tried to fix one and gave up, good luck buddy

Anonymous

Both the car and the Collab are very very exciting news. I think it’s great how you are growing your channel! :)

Anonymous

What a beauty - I can see how it splits opinion though. Lots of great stuff to look forward too, thanks for giving us the heads up!

Anonymous

This is interestig. Surely one of the worst track record models from modern BMWs, but also surprisingly nice car(from the inside). Looking forward to this.

Anonymous

You do like to bring them back to the motherland. This is going to be a fun engine to watch you pull your hair out with.

Anonymous

It appears this model is loaded with many extra systems, including variable ride height, rear wheel steering, turbocharger with water intercooler. A casual look at used turbochargers for sale for this model shows them to be expensive. I hope for your sake you do not have to buy too many parts. Good luck. I look forward to seeing you tackle this complicated beast.

Anonymous

Can’t wait for this project 😆

Anonymous

I never thought of this car to be on the channel, but I am so excited to see that it's going to be restored. Can't wait until it comes to Frankfurt.

Anonymous

Yes! Perfect car to represent my city. Can’t wait to see this one, and hopefully own one soon (non-Alpina for me).

Anonymous

I was never a fan of what Alpina did to perfectly fine BMWs and never understood why someone would buy one over an M car... But this car is different and to me, really stands out from the other Aplinas that came before it. Even though I lost interest in the more "modern" BMWs, I always had a soft spot for the E65. Great buy and I can't wait to watch the episodes!

Anonymous

You will soon require a small army of Sreten Minions to assist you with all these glorious projects.

Anonymous

I think Alex is a nice guy, this could be awsome. Your both chanels and job quitting for full time youtubing means that you're on the good way! If only you had the taxes from USA, not EU, would be easier for you! Can't wait for that Alpina!

Anonymous

Insert Dominic Toretto face : “Shit just got real”

Anonymous

If the car turns out to have really good bones and the paint ends up being in really bad condition, would you consider a colorchange? I mean you say yourself you dislike black alot, and there are a bunch of cool BMW/Individual colors to pick from that would suit such a special car

m539restorations

I'd love to repaint it blue but to do a proper color change, it's so much work, especially if I want the engine bay done as well.

Peter Schroeter

If Alex does come over, do let me know and I'll join you guys for a quick speed run in his favorite car that he got me into E55 Wagon with pretty much the same stats as the B7 only a tad faster as it's probably lighter than the E66... https://youtu.be/uTwsMUQUFoA

Peter Schroeter

Just noticed it is a SWB E65 isn't it? That gen 7 series it's sometimes hard to tell but it does look like the regular 'short' version which I think looks way better anyway. I share your sentiment with black paints but this car is so good looking in jet-black! Congrats on the purchase. Record depreciation for sure.

Peter Schroeter

If you ever get the chance, drive one. The thing about Alpina is the cars are not BMWs in character. They're quite exotic, torque heavy and high speed gliders purpose built for long distance hauls. Totally different than an M car, super comfortable but still handy - you won't find anything more balanced than an Alpina suspension. I rode in a 1990 B10 4.0 E34, it had received a new factory exhaust from header to muffler and it felt like a Ferrari in a 5 series suit. I do love Alpina so I am biased but get a ride in one or drive it and I'm sure you'll understand what they're all about and why a BMW or M car are just different.
