Tempest1395

There’s a reason Eren was nominated for best Protagonist and best Antagonist in the Crunchyroll anime awards like homie is going crazy lol

Tempest1395

I think he totally can, and idk his nomination for best antagonist doesn’t seem too far off (especially if you’ve read the manga) like he’s making an enemy of the entire world including his own people. He went from being a vengeful protagonist just trying to eliminate titans, to the hateful antagonist trying to eliminate the world. It’s a hell of a transformation but it’s becoming clearer each week that he is in fact the enemy, the final boss of the series. Kinda cancels out the whole protagonist thing but that’s what’s great about it. At least I think so.

# eren did nothing wrong

Eren: "Why am I the only one popping my f*cking p*ssy right now?!" I am staying with my boy. I had to really process what that meant when I was reading the manga and after a month I stayed on the contract.

Raiden

I think you are misunderstanding what antagonist means. Antagonist doesn't mean the bad guy, it means someone who opposes the protagonist. Eren IS the protagonist however much of a villain he becomes.

Tempest1395

That’s true you’re right. Personally I like to just trust the creator’s intentions. Cause really at the end of the day the main character is whatever the creator wants him to be regardless of what we say ya know, with enough creativity there is endless potential for a unique main character. But I do like that he was nominated for antagonist like I can still see it and to certain extents it kinda makes some sense depending how you look at it. But that’s what’s cool about this series is that we can have these kinds of talks because the creator really did try to blur the lines between good and evil, protag and antag as much as he could ya know.

Tempest1395

I appreciate your feedback and input by the way! This is an interesting conversation i enjoy it lol but for anyone who likes to argue and get heated please remember I am not calling him the antagonist, I just think it’s not impossible. It’s Crunchyroll who labeled him the antagonist in their anime awards so please take a look at that.

Kalm

I just remembered that there are other eldians around the earth too.😶

Antagonist (this is the literal definition): a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary. So yes, Eren can be and is an antagonist. He is opposing and is hostile to the entire world.

Tempest1395

Yes, the main character is whatever the creator wants, they are not limited to being “protagonist” or antagonist” and (at least I think) the creator of AoT wanted Eren to ultimately be an antagonist. https://storymind.com/blog/how-do-you-create-a-main-character-who-is-an-antagonist/ This is a link to a thing I found about this topic. As a writer myself this is actually very interesting I think. No one has to read it but it is a nice read.

Raiden

Crunchyroll isn't right either btw. Also, the guys on the CR Awards panel are just random content creators who might not even have anything to do with anime or even storytelling. I don't think a lot of them understand what an antagonist means either. If Eren was there for the villain category which doesn't exist, it would have been fine but an antagonist is someone who goes against the protagonist, it doesn't matter if they are good or bad. So, by definition of the word, he can't be the antagonist because he is the protagonist.

Raiden

He is antagonising the world but in storytelling, in a particular story, antagonist is the one who opposes the protagonist. If you dive deep into literature, there have been a lot of protagonists who are completely antagonistic towards others and in general but they are still the protagonist of the story. I hope this doesn't come off as me saying Eren is not the bad guy. He IS the bad guy of the story but, at this point still, he is also the protagonist of the story.

Tempest1395

Nah you’re good, that’s an interesting point! Like I said before I like how really deep the creator made this series because we are able to be here and have this kind of discussion and dissect the characters the way we are, it’s cool! Anyway, these are some good viewpoints everyone is making towards this topic.

reanimated

If you’re using the “storytelling” definition then yes he can’t be the antagonist.

Ivan

I don't think we are ever going to experience another well written story like attack on titan, and the many plot twist and turns.

reanimated

Yeah, it'll be awhile for sure. Sounds weird but Dorohedoro from what I saw was pretty insane with all the twists and turns and the crazy world.

Steve

why Eren sound so smooth when he said his name lmao

Ymir literally had Stockholm Syndrome

I'm still with team Eren. Yeah, there are a truckload of innocent people around the world, but I guess you guys kind of forgot that last season right before Eren started to rampage in Marley, the leaders of the world unanimously decided "FUCK ELDIA, they're too dangerous". They were right though but you gotta protect your peeps. This is war and there is no righteous side in a war. Everyone loses something. Side note, liking dark shounen that borders on seinen huh? There is this dark triad of such recent mangas, where the authors of all three actually know each other: Chainsaw man, Hell's paradise, and you may have heard of this one, Jujutsu Kaisen.

I'm kinda Team Eren, but also kinda Team IDGAF. It's kinda fucked how there's really nobody I can actually root for or get behind. There's literally zero good outcomes possible. Genocide seems like it's gonna happen either way. Whether the world is united against a single race of people, or whether Eren just wants to protect his homies. How the fuck do you enjoy a story like that? I like the anime, but it's went down on my list because it's become like, "everyone's fucked either way, so fuck everything." Main character is convenient, since he's been around since S1, and I have no investment in the outside world. Idc about ppl I've never even seen in a fictional TV show. Random NPC's with no names. Whatever happens happen, though. Ultimately it's an anime, so why do any of us even give a flying fuck what even happens at this point, when there's actually nothing but gray. Not even the slightest hint of black vs. white certainty.

My view is we can't forget about the alternative being most of the world powers attack Paradis. Even if it was Eren manipulating his father to get this far, he didn't push Marley into forming an alliance and attacking Paradis the first time. Now as far as destroying the rest of the world, I can see why he wouldn't want the potential for a Marley 2.0 to exist so I can understand the logic to his decision but it's still fucked.

Imagine your people being second class citizens at best for 2000 years. Only for your oppressors to point a thousand nukes at you and go to an island to live happily ever after. I imagine you'd be pissed too

Anonymous

It's not even a single race. It's literally a little over 1 to 2 million Eldians. Most Eldians live outside the walls.

Anonymous

Bruh Eren's goal lines up perfectly with that pedo king's goal lol

Jaze

Imagine your people being nothing but tools and weapons used by those oppressors and after 2000 years being held responsible for their actions while simultaneously being ignorant of the whole thing. Never said Marley didn’t have reasoning for being developed the way that it did. My point was he didn’t manipulate Marley into attacking, the Rumbling was his response to the inevitable.
