I worked in a high end Vietnamese restaurant early on in NYC. It was more pan-Southeast Asian cuisine (not that most people knew the difference), but I picked up a taste for the food I've never been able to shake. I routinely went to restaurants where I'd be one of the only white people in attendance and I still routinely go to Asian grocery stores. I feel weird when I'm there, but I legit just want the food. I don't mean anyone any harm. Food is such a big part of ethnic identity, even cheap items like spam. I had this babysitter growing up who'd feed us a huge batch of Kraft Mac and Cheese with cut up hotdogs in it, and I still get hungry for it sometimes. Even today. I regret it almost immediately after eating it, but I just can't help myself.
