Hi everyone! I've been busy working on a few different features that I'm excited to complete and share with you. In the meantime, I've received an email from Patreon about changes to their membership/subscription options that I wanted to briefly discuss.

Patreon will be changing from offering a "charged on the first of every month" billing option - which I use - to only offering a "charged on the day you sign up and every month on that date" billing model. This change will begin happening from November 2024 (although I can potentially delay it until November 2025).

I have a few concerns:

  • I mentally work on a "first to the end of the month" schedule, which helps me keep an eye on how much content I'm providing in any given month.

  • Pausing my Patreon to allow me time away from creating - which has been necessary for mental health reasons in the past and may be again - could become difficult. I don't think I would feel comfortable pausing my Patreon at any point if there are patrons who only subscribed a few days before I paused, effectively "cheating" them out of weeks of content they signed up for.

That said, I'll try to adapt as best as I can and hope the subscription change isn't too disruptive.

The reason for the change relates to the Apple iOS app store, which brings me to an important question: Do any of you use the Apple iOS store to to access the Patreon app? There are some backend settings I need to deal with that relate to users accessing Patreon via the iOS store, so knowing how many - if any - people use this method would be helpful to me. Please let me know in the comments if you use the iOS store to access Patreon.

Thank you!

i downloaded the patreon app from the ios store - is that what you mean by accessing it?

Kimie80

That's crazy and I am sorry that that will disrupt so many of you. I'm a samsung lover and user so apple doesn't affect me

I don't use the Apple iOS store to access the Patreon app. If it helps your decision, as a creator I've decided to "Maintain earnings and cover Apple’s fee by increasing prices in iOS app." So in essence, I'm passing on the upcharge to my patrons. I hate to do that, but patrons always have the option to become a member on the web to avoid that upcharge.

Magestical Mysterium

I use the patreon website to access your creations, I don't see a need to use the application on mobile, but that's just me, (Plus I can access it on Desktop using the Site)

Patreon's exact language is this: "new memberships purchased in the iOS app" "only applies to new memberships purchased in the iOS app" My reading of the email is that they're talking about anyone who downloads the Patreon app from the store, opens it, and then decides to pledge to me from within the app. If you pledged to me via the web, and just downloaded the app and use the app to read posts/write comments/send messages, I don't think that includes you. So it depends on how you signed up to my Patreon.

maks

ooo gotcha - i’ll definitely keep using the patreon app, but i’d be fine to unsubscribe on ios and resubscribe on my desktop

simdulgence

Thank you! I understand that they're just trying to make their app still work with the Apple store's new rules, and hopefully it won't cause too much of a disruption overall, just might take some adjusting on my part.

Francesco

I access Patreon on a desktop PC, as I use it almost exclusively to download CC for the sims, which I play on said desktop.

simdulgence

Yeah, that's something I'm unsure about at the moment. I don't necessarily want to do it, but it's a little bit easier to do as long as patrons can still pledge via the web. I suspect that more people sign up via their computer anyway (in order to download files and put them in the actual game) and use the app for updates/communications, but I wanted to get a reading on how many people use the app before I decide for sure.

simdulgence

Thanks for the feedback! Part of the changes include fees for *new* iOS subscribers (that wouldn't currently mean you as an existing subscriber), which I'll navigate depending on how many people use the app to subscribe. Subscribing via desktop avoids any possible fees to my knowledge, so it's good to know that's an option.

simdulgence

Yeah I figure a lot of people access it via the website so they can get the CC I'm sharing. Thanks for letting me know!

simdulgence

Thanks for the feedback! I assume a lot of people use the web/a desktop so they can access the content to add to their game, but it's helpful to know for sure how people are accessing it!

Arkenon8

I pay directly to the Patreon system, not through the Apple Store. I use it on my Samsung or my Desktop PC.

Spica Naos

I've started all of my Patreon subscriptions on desktop, but I have the iOS app for notifications as well. Sorry to hear about the change...

Jake

I use the iOS app for notifications but I'm pretty sure i wouldn't have subscribed through the app. I think spotify had a similar issue, but it was worse for them because apple is their direct competitor so they would have to charge extra for premium and it would make apple music a cheaper option

ThisGhost

I use only the website. I've been following the Apple/Patreon issue and I feel like Apple is seriously overreaching here. My vote is for doing what's best for your desktop subscribers.

Rexedo

I use the iOS app for all my patreon pledges and subscription payments, but generally like my payments being deducted at the beginning of a month. So only initiate subscriptions in the first few days of a month and just wait till then, if I need to.

Francesco

Regardless of what happens - and to be frank, I am not sure I understand the change - a big thank you for all the marvellous content you produce. Throughout the years, I have mixed and matched "body" stuff from various creators. In the end, I've settled for your CC as my go to, as it's high quality, updated frequently and suits perfectly my needs. Thank you!

fmsednanref

I use Patreon website on PC for any download I have to do here but, I do have the Patreon app though I'm an Android user as it helps me to keep an eye on updates amongst creators I follow/pledge ;)

simdulgence

Yeah, I assume more people use it for notifs than pledging/accessing content. Thanks for the feedback!

simdulgence

I agree re: the Apple decision. But I guess Patreon doesn't feel they can afford to push back or risk being removed from the app store. I appreciate the advice/feedback!

simdulgence

Do you make your pledges using the iOS store/app? Or just use it for notifications/reading messages/leaving comments?

simdulgence

My understanding is there's going to be a fee attached to new memberships pledged through the iOS version of the Patreon app. For existing subscriptions, there won't be a fee, but I'm not sure if that's also true if you ever cancel and then re-pledge to a creator. Just something to be aware of going forward!

simdulgence

That's good to know! I think some of the changes Patreon is making will only impact Apple iOS app users, so at least that shouldn't affect you (excluding their overall change in subscription billing model). Thanks for answering!

Heidi Wilde

I usually use Patreon via my PC, but I'm an Android user for mobile, so no Apple iOS for me.

fmsednanref

I went through the comments and from what I understand, only new pledges via the Patreon app on iOS will be impacted. If that's the case, well the option would be for people to pledge via the website exclusively so they don't have to pay the extra charge (asuming you choose that option). I always pledged via the website anyways, so even if that would happen for Android users, I'd keep doing it as I did so far :-) It's always good for us know and share that information though ;-) Thanks for that! :-D

simdulgence

Yes, that's my understanding at the moment. The only question that's outstanding for me is about anyone who joins, then cancels, then re-joins. I assume that's a "new" membership, although I can't say with 100% certainty. Regardless, the option is there to pledge via the website and I'm going to make a separate post about it at a future date as well as include some notes on my page for potential new patrons so they're aware of the cost using the iOS store. That's if I choose that option, of course. I don't fully want to pass an extra charge on to patrons, but if the option to join via web exists and those people can sign up in a way that incurs no extra fee for *anyone*, I strongly encourage that. As I said, if I do make that decision, I'll try to make it clear to anyone who wants to sign up.

simdulgence

Thanks for letting me know! It's helpful to know how many people are accessing via iOS so I can take those numbers into account. :)

simdulgence

Thank you for saying that! I'm really glad that you like my work so much, and I hope that what I make in future continues to satisfy you. I'll make another post about the billing changes/issues a little later on (if not this month, then definitely before any actual changes happen) just to make sure that the situation is entirely clear for everyone. This was just a heads-up and a way to figure out how many people are using the iOS store to pledge as a first point of discussion. :)

Sean

I process all my payments through desktop, I only have the iOS app for notifications and to listen to some podcasts
