Grey, I'm surprised to didn't mention the king of all workweek schedule options! Add weekend Wednesday, but keep both normal weekend days as days of rest. The 4 day work week is amazing if you can swing it

That answers the question what I should do with all my vacation days, now that 2020 isn't the year for travelling.

I used to work 4 10s, and I gotta say, extra weekend is incredible. If it was weekend Wednesday, I bet it would have been even better!

I would be super excited to try this if I didn't just take a job that requires 4 days / week travel 🙃

Andy Shih

I did this for a while. Worked for a place that allowed PTO to accrue without limits. I had too much to do, so I didn't get to take vacations. My PTO accrued to a point I was told I had to take time off, but I still wasn't allowed to be gone for a real vacation. So I started taking Wednesdays off every other week. I thought I was being nice by sticking around on Mondays (when I had to fix things that broke over the weekend) and Fridays (where I had to fix things people forgot about until they were about to take off for the weekend). Eventually, I was told I couldn't take Wednesdays off because it was bad for the morale of the other people in the company. I don't work there anymore.

Nice to see the old animation style put to use again.

I worked 4 day weeks at my last job, but days off were different each week. Some times you could have 6 days off in a row, like an unscheduled vacation and then you could turn around and have 8 days in a row working. Toward the end it was 12-14 hour days, so I had to call it quits, but after 10 years I can say that the best schedule was 2 days on, 1 day off, 2 days on, and then 2 days off. Even working 12 hour days didn't seem that much when it was only 2 days in a row.

I can kinda one-up that with my work scheudule. I work in construction, all by myself, abroad, so staying in hotels and then drive home for the weekend. Monday-Wednesday are LONG days, as much as I can cram in there. By thursday early afternoon I got my 40 hours for the week in and that's it for the week. The rest of thursday is just very much needed recovery, but that leaves me with 3 full days just for me. Working 4 - 3 (or even 3 1/2 - 3 1/2) is SO much better!

Thanks for making this video. One of the reasons I went freelance was to add Thursday as an non-working day in addition to the weekend. I'm significantly more productive working a four-day week compared to five, even working the same hours per day, and the weekends actually restore energy levels properly. It's a game changer.

Interesting concept! There’s one major flaw - and it’s the same thing as with many other things in life: working with other people. The fact that a portion of the population would work on this “shifted” schedule means those working on wednesday will be pestering those who have it off - and the opposite for saturday!

I do think this schedule mainly works for people who aren't interested in socialising, since a lot of people do that on Saturday, leaving Sunday as the "recovery day" afterwards. Of course you could shift your weekend day off to Saturday, but then you don't have any time to recover after. When I worked weekends at a radio station, my biggest frustration was not being able to spend time when other people were free. I couldn't do anything on my two days off (Monday and Tuesday) because the rest of the world was working! So glad when I changed jobs and got my weekend back. And I'm not even an extrovert.

I work third shift, four ten hour days. Which gives me Sunday through Tuesday off. If I flip my schedule Saturday mornings, I can have the whole Saturday to do things when other people are off, then still have Monday and Tuesday to run errands while veyone is at work.

I would LOVE to do this on a regular basis. I totally feel exactly like this every week.

I did (basically) the same when I worked 4 12s (0000 to 1200).

In my job, I have Sunday off and must select another day other than Saturday. I have found Wednesday is the best exactly as you pointed out!
