Go back and rewatch the 3rds funeral. Asuma is front and center, and pensive. If you watch everything really carefully they drop a lot of not so subtle hints. And he has a brother, who is Anbu, and who is never seen or mentioned really. A fan theory supposes that the Anbu guy in white during konoha crush is possibly his son, which is why he's so incredibly invested. But I actually like how they don't make a big deal about Asuma's relationship with the 3rd. They don't hide it, but they never directly draw your attention to it. Like his last name is Sarutobi, just like the 3rd and konohamaru. Its right there from his first introduction, but you have to be able to put it together.
