20:25 Does he mean "Kim, people are dying" which is a KUWTK reference, not mean girls? Sorry, I know too much about 2000s pop culture.

Interesting take. The Iranian 'left' seems historically to be made of students and urban elite. There aren't trade unions to represent workers because the country isn't industrialized. In a broader historical sense commodity rich ex-colonies have attempted to build counter power via national liberation movements, so a western left wing ideology oriented at liberating workers from their domestic rulers is counterproductive to the aim of national sovereignty.

Iran is more industrialised than one might think. Of course, they also ban usury and encourage the formation of cooperative enterprises over corporations.

Just spend a week buying vodka redbulls in Pristina and you're golden.

Brace had an interesting comment about Doctor's Without Borders. Anyone have any useful reading material about DWB?

DumbDumDumbDumb

DWB is fine but it's still neocolonial philanthropy that plays by Western rules when it comes to embargoes and sanctions

Mo Cheikhali

This guy eats up too much western news sources on Iran. Much of what he says is true, however he severely understates the overall majority support for the Islamic Republic among the working class in Iran, much of whom are pretty religious. Shia Islam does and will likely always exist as the dominant force in Iran. No leftist ideology will ever replace it. Either Iran remains united under the current government, or it fractures into civil war. This dude is acting like the Iranian government is this incompetent entity solely using repressive tactics to remain in power. This is the result of his diaspora centric consumption of news and events relating to Iran. Disappointing because he’s clearly not an idiot. How about talk to people who actually spend time in Iran and can actually visit the country?

Speaking for 'the people of iran' is just like talking to 'the people' of the US - rich iranians like marjane satrapi and lotsss of expats are up in arms that their window washers got any power from the revolution. The leadership is both an uplifting force and an oppressive force. The idea that shia islam isnt, in many was, farrrr more leftist than say, protestantism, is silly. You talk w most middle and lower class iranians and their concern and care for ppl around them and at large far exceeds anything in the west.

Seamus, i think has a... Kind of ok perspective for a political, western journalist. Its true though - its apparent that iranian culture and interpersonal mode of operating hasnt been sufficiently experienced on his part, the longer he talks, the less i feel inclined to listen, he's a bit irritating, just...lacks the warmth that i associate w everything ive experienced in iranian culture in 10 yrs

I think more than anything, ppl in the west need to realize that iran has a beautiful culture, and their refusal to suck the US off is integral and admirable
