April Dormitory Diary Entry - Junta Sakurai (Patreon)

Thank you for your support, and my apologies for the significant delay—here is my April diary entry.

When I was a student, I used to sneak a sketchbook under my notebook during class and often doodled. It turns out that even Director Hideaki Anno used to draw flipbook cartoons on the margins of his textbooks during his school days. Experiencing this makes me realize that everyone starts from similar, ordinary beginnings.

Since my last dormitory diary entry, much time has passed, and many things have happened, including my first day at the studio and various training sessions—it's been quite a whirlwind. During these trainings, especially the less enjoyable ones on etiquette, it’s not unusual to spot fellow newcomers discreetly doodling. After all, we are animators, accustomed to drawing while listening to others. While it may not be something to praise, or perhaps it is fitting for an animator, this ability to draw as naturally as breathing reminds me of a documentary featuring Director Hayao Miyazaki doodling during meetings, which even commands respect.

Recently, our technical training started, cementing my first steps as a career animator. My days are occupied by drawing followed by thinking about drawing, which is challenging, perplexing, and enjoyable at the same time.

From the days of secretly drawing in class to now proudly and openly working as a professional artist, I am committed to giving my all, knowing it would make my younger self proud.

Last month, I also had the chance to interact with other residents of the dorm. Meeting my peers, many of who have come from distant regions, gives me courage. I enjoyed our time together. Once again, I look forward to getting along with all the dorm residents.

お世話になっております。大遅刻、4月の日記です。申し訳ありません。

学生だった時、授業中にノートの下に自由帳を忍ばせてよく落書きをしていました。教科書の端っこにパラパラ漫画を描くことは、あの庵野監督も学生時代にやっていたそうで、みんなはじまりは似たような、ありふれた日常からだったということを体感します。

前回の寮生日記から日が経ち、その間にスタジオへの初出勤や研修などさまざまな事があり激動の日々だったと言えます。

そんな研修の最中、あまり楽しくはないマナー研修の時に、近くの同期の方々がこっそりラクガキをしているのを見かけることも珍しくはありません。なにせアニメーターが集まっていますから、人の話を聞きながら絵を描くことは手慣れたものです。褒められたことではないかも知れませんが、いや、アニメーターであるならばむしろ、正しくはなくとも相応しい姿かも知れません。どんな時も息をするように絵を描く姿は、会議中にラクガキをしていた宮崎駿監督のドキュメンタリー映像と重なり、敬意さえ感じてしまいます。

最近はアニメーションの技術的な研修も始まり、いよいよアニメーターとして動き出しました。文字どうり一日中絵を描いて、絵のことを考える日々は、苦しくもあり、悩ましくもあり、楽しくもあります。

授業中に隠れて絵を描いていた日々から、堂々と誇りを持って仕事として絵を描く日々に。これから全力で取り組めれば、あの頃の自分も誇れるはずです。

先月は寮生のみなさんとの交流もすることができました。自分以外にも遠くの地方からきた仲間が沢山いて勇気をもらえます。楽しい時間を過ごせました。改めて、寮生の皆さんよろしくお願いします。
