There's no single official origin story for the Joker, but in the comics and the Arkham games and some other media they typically go with at least a semi-factual origin wherein the Joker was a guy who was either pressed into working for the Red Hood Gang or was the Red Hood himself and fell into the vat of chemicals during a job, sometimes caused by Batman, sometimes not. That's where the whole vat of chemicals thing originates.

I love the soundtrack in the beginning..reminds me of the old batman cartoon i watched as a kid in the 90's :)
