I always find it funny that American reactors immediately know August is taking Adderall, whereas reactors I’ve seen from other countries are often confused about why he wants to take it or what the effects will be. Americans are just like “oh yeah, we know.” Doesn’t really say a lot of positive things about our culture, does it? I know you said you don’t want to talk about HS anymore, but you raised some excellent points at the end of the video. The two shows are definitely comparable in that they’re two takes on the teenage queer experience. They just take very different approaches and both are totally valid. I don’t believe in pitting one against the other because they aren’t meant to be compared in that way, but rather complementary (the two shows share a fanbase for a reason). Alice Oseman, the creator of HS, said she wanted to create her own happy ending, which is why she chooses to write with a more optimistic lens on the queer experience. But you’re right that YR is darker and grittier, yet still wholesome in its own way. Gossip Girl is a good comparison, especially because the show definitely spends a lot of time analyzing classism. Just look at August’s attitude towards Simon; he’s always pulling Wilhelm away from him because he’s “not suitable to be seen with,” even as a friend. I would be interested to hear more about whether your views about the show change after you finish the season. I’m glad you’re enjoying the show.

I like both shows! HS is super cute but it's definitely more of an escape for those days when you need a light-on-the-brain, sugary pick-me-up. The romance in Young Royals is fresh, young, and innocent, but the world around it is more multifaceted (and dark at times). I also like that the two shows are diverse in their own ways (queer-specific in HS and race/class/neurologically in YR).
