I'm looking forward to another year of smutty stories and Femdom thrills with you, so let's get started! First up, a quick review of the year-end polls. For both polls we had a clear, stand-out winner this winter.

That segues us nicely into this month's topic. I'm pretty sure I covered this in a previous Mistress Speaks long ago, but I've decided to revisit the issue. The debate has raged on the internet for as long as artists have been drawing women with cocks: What exactly is a futanari?

The etymology of the term is simple enough. Futanari is the Japanese word for "hemaphrodite", which suggests that a Futa would have both sex organs; a penis and a vagina. And yet, any cursory look at the landscape of Futa art will reveal that the vast majority of futa hentai is comprised of characters with female bodies but a cock and balls below. No vagina to be found (or if they do have one, it's often hidden.)

This makes most Futanari, as presented, more akin to pre-op trans women, if pre-op trans women were hypersexual, hyperendowed and often way taller and stronger than the vast majority of women. Of course, most trans women are nothing like that, so it's silly to compare them. The similarities are surface level at best.

It gets even stranger when you learn, especially in the early days of Futa art, that it was common to draw Futa with a penis and a vagina but no scrotum. James and I have discussed this at length and we agree that this is the worst look for them. It's neither aesthetically pleasing nor anatomically convincing. Obviously, some feel differently, but to us, that configuration just looks and feels odd.

On the other hand, since Futanari, with their typically supersized sexual organs and sky high libido, are already magical creatures of a kind, shouldn't it be up to the artist (or writer) to define them however they want? Futa may have derived from the Japanese word for hermaphrodite, but time and popular sentiment have changed what the word means. That's how it is with all language, ultimately. Cultures and their terminology evolve.

I asked James why he takes the approach he does to describing Futanari in his stories. He explained it thusly:

"The Futa characters I write are not only hypersexual, but purely dominant. To me, they're beautiful, powerful women with a cock who want to top you. The idea of them also having a pussy doesn't bother me, but I don't envision them that way. Why would I? In the stories I write, they exist to do the fucking, not to get fucked. Even if I decide to engage in a rare flip of the power dynamic (like I did in a couple scenes in Bayonetta's Abuse) a Futa can still take it up the ass.

Beyond that, adding in the vagina would mean I have to do even more description for Futa characters (who already need a ton.) It's not something I'm opposed to doing (if a commissioner wanted it, for example), but I'm not inclined to do it as a matter of course. It seems like a lot of extra work for not much utility, particularly for my purposes.

That said, I don't go out of my way to say "this woman DEFINITELY doesn't have a pussy!" If the people reading my stories want to imagine the Futa that way, they're free to. If they want to read about Futa with no balls, I suppose they'll have to find another author, because I'm never going to write characters who shoot gallons of cum from nonexistant organs. That's a bridge too far, for me."

There you have it. "The Futa discourse!" I wish I had more to add, but James and I are of like mind on this issue. I do think he could throw the poor pussy lovers a bone now and then. If people want their Futa with the works, why not give it them? Even if it's a little extra work...
