I will never have to apply a balance patch to this chapter. Nope, never. No sirree, Bob.

Thanks 😁

Bloodorange17

I immediately recognized the CGP Grey references. I love it

Andrew

Thank you!

" Something about ink belonging on paper, but not on cloth." - So is this because the common world knowledge effect on the skills or Rain's own knowledge? Since Rain's own knowledge should include stuff like picture prints on a shirt, which are kinda of ink belonging on shirts.

I lost The Game

Chris Mantakounis

Lol good luck with not having to tinker with this chapter at least 5 times.

Critical Hit

Still no status check? Has his status not actually changed with Dozer doing whatever he did?

Alexander Dupree

I loved the chapter I hope that rains new perfectionism is here to stay as a small reminder of dozer

Ethan Gardner

If I remember correctly there is no status changes in relation to the soul. It seems as though Dozer is influencing rain through his soul based on the description of dozer trying to get back to him and the fact his soul is openish. If he is in his soul the interface shouldn't show it, just as it doesn't say anything about his current soul issues. Then again, it could be that easy and Rain just hasn't looked at his status properly.

Alex Matheny

Ive spent the past 15 minutes giggling on and off at "No. You may not."

Mike G.

Good stuff, thanks!

What do you mean, *you people*?

Ziggy

Ohhh hello sweet, sweet accolade data. Depending on what gets retconned and balanced, obviously. And I see you, "resistance cap" mention. So we have a gambit of accolades listed here. The "special" ones are cool and show how extremely varied and unique they can get. Stronger grip only when climbing and no discomfort from cold? Cool and extremely specific. I should've seen the common to legendary rating coming into play. I didn't, and it works. So! For tier 1, for resistances, the range is 3-30. 3 common, 5 uncommon, 10 rare, 30 legendary. Whereas the next rank of tier 2 starts at 50 resistance for common. So while two legendary tier 1 plates are better than one common tier 2 plate, good luck finding that many legendaries. I'm assuming the ones that played a factor in the Swords beating Ameliah are the Strength, Health, and Force resistance accolades.

His Dad

The Common Knowledge series is intended to provide an overview of various topics. Some background information and descriptions A full discussion on this effect is beyond the scope of the Common Knowledge series. also another place

Ziggy

Several times now there are references made where I'm like.. wait do I know that thing? Yes. Yes I do.

Anonymous

Thanks for the chapter. A full list of Accolades, cool, that won't ever get retcon'ed, no, not at all. Though, seriously, Thanks for the Crunchy Bits and Lore.

Frogspoison

It's interesting to note that a Tier 1 legendary accolade has lower stats then a T2 common accolade.

Anonymous

Also, one chapter closer to the titular Delve. 'Titular' will never stop being funny. Also also, Rain's Power Up and Impending Level Grind should be fun. But something I'm looking forward to is more Skill Tree Unlocks.

Ziggy

I think that works. Because as is, 2 of those legendary resistance accolades is 60, but the 1 common is 50. So legendary ones can be slightly better for the same amount of slots than a common one of the higher tier, but would be weaker than even an uncommon accolade of a higher tier. This rewards having more power to challenge higher tier lairs, as is common in the system. Even if you're lucky enough to snag a legendary, you're going to want to challenge as high a tier a lair as you can handle for the better rewards. Like let's say you can handle a tier 2 lair. You're going to want to hit it, because even an uncommon tier 2 accolade is better than two legendary tier 1 accolades. And legendaries are obviously less common while you can easily get an uncommon accolade. Or better even. If legendary accolades were more powerful, you'd frequently clear less dangerous (to you) lairs in the hopes of getting legendary plates and make your build more efficient. It would reward the cautious route, and also leave less lairs for the lower leveled. Whereas with the current setup, you're not gonna bother with lower tier lairs after a certain point. Unless you're obsessively looking for skill accolades or respec accolades or something. Or you're a collector.

Thank you for the chapter

His Dad

Sorry Im talking about italics but patron comment editor is eating my text

Ziggy

Also, here's a breakdown of some of the things Rain can currently manage with those accolades by using multiples. +160 strength, 16 slots +5 speed, 10 slots +4000 mana, 8 slots +3000 health, 12 slots +800 stamina, 5 slots +1200 force resistance, 18 slots (1 +200 force resist left, not enough slots) The piddly common to rare resistance accolades for tier one from 3-10 resistance are generally not impressive or worth it.

His Dad

He says "activated Essence Well, sending a few thousand mana to himself" EW doesn't generate Mana??

Ruriva

I like Kettel but he’s kinda annoying. On the flip side Tarny is annoying but I kinda like him.

Anonymous

You mean hidden skill unlocks? He’s already unlock a shit tone of skill trees

Anonymous

Tarny grows on you, while Kettle grates

Joshua Little

Can't wait to get Rain to Silver finally. Thanks for the chapter.

Anonymous

Agreed. More specifically Kettel is understandable but progressively more annoying, Tarny is zealous but getting better.

Anonymous

It does if min maxed well enough. That was the entire point of "essence meditation" so long ago, and also likely how Rain broke his soul.

Maya

i loved this chapter from beginning to end

M van Dongen

My suggestion : put all the accolades in an excel sheet because this is not legible.

Anonymous

Finally ENDLESS REIGN just a level grind away.

Enkelados

Well that would be ink in an ordered and recognizable pattern. Not only the substance but the pattern is important. Dirt in the living room? Filth. Dirt in the garden bed? Perfectly fine.

Enkelados

It is perfectly legible though? I read the dark version.

It kinda a strange decision to bring only Rain to silver. I mean you are risking 2 silvers(dunno if Tallhearth is not gold), 1 bronze to get 1 bronze upgraded. Even if bringing additional 2-3 bronzes was not beneficial for the fighting power of the delve party, the reward from promoting would be much larger...

Zarik0

I dont understand he give them the list to all, its fucking dangerous for him and for ascension (if other organisation hundred old years dont do this) what made him thinking his organisation 1 month old can do it? (he know the people for 1-2 month) basically they stranger (he have no detect lie like the watch so cant know their ideal is really the same as ascension, a lot of opportunist or selfish in them for sure (human nature) and now he say to them they have accolade who can buy a entire city, what a recip for disaster when he dont need to (they for talbeart, he killed he have, they can give some of them to ascension yes but the ultra rare of ultra big buff no, and why say they have 93 seriosuly Thinking is naive thinking was over and he finnaly wake up Without the trick of the watch to see lie (using it only when people want to join ascension (so sure they good people and same ideal at them) and using when problem (big?) happen (fight/disagrement/steal/etc) Well that cant work, its gonna be a disaster at some point If you cant eliminate the rotten partie surely ascension with this type of ideal gonna collapse and in a ugly way

Anonymous

did you by any chance watch a video called 'the rules for rulers'? edit: 'I would be lost without CGP Grey' i read that line right after commenting lol

Monsters don't scale like people, it normally takes a full party of silvers to take down a silver blue monster. What they're doing is only possible because Tailheart is super-strong AND experienced, and even so, it's going to be incredibly difficult to keep Rain alive. Every instance of effectively dead weight you add means Amelia and Tailheart have to divide their attention again, between killing the silver and stopping the dead weight from dying. In-world, what they're doing would already be considered suicide, making their odds worse isn't smart.

Anonymous

That is why it could work almost everyone there has nothing but ascension by their own choice. Telling them means anyone on the fence about whether or not Ascension will work now has access to more powerful items then most adventurers see in their life in less then a month and if that isn't incentive to keep your mouth shut I don't know what is. Even if they are only there for the profit the silvers are already starting to power level up members which has been mentioned to be a very risky and expensive task. Plus no one can touch Tallheart right now. Anyone out for personal gain in ascension has to play the long game. The biggest worry about announcements like this is people not trusting Rain to follow thru which judging on their reaction and past actions is not the case.

Andrei

C'mon, go go go! He's been stuck at 18 for waaaaaay too long!

Rain, what have you done? The people of this world will not thank you for empowering bureaucracy.

How come Tier3 force common resist is 200, but heat uncommon is 1000? I think it would make sense for 1000 heat to be rare at least. Unless more common elements have higher values?

Anonymous

I understand now why Rain is so infantile and soft: he likes "The Hobbit".

Håvard

Force resistance is pysical resistance. I am not 100% sure but I belive it protects you from normal attacks therefor is worth a lot nore than heat that only protects you from some mages same with Arcane resistance.

Deegles

Gave me goosebumps!

Ziggy

Do.. people not usually like one of the most iconic and popular fantasy books? Did I miss the memo? Unless you mean the three movie monstrosity based on The Hobbit. God those were bad.

I like rains speeches tho?

Was expecting firebolt and a few chonky focus accolades on Brovose since the madlad actually used basic bitch tier zero firebolt against a (weakened)level 18 blue in chapter one(38k hp I think). I guess I'll just go with he accidentally his whole shield mage build by getting firebolt and fire metamagic. Also gotta give Anton's build some props. Awakened, for all their power, are still humans. Using a juiced up bleeder skill on Ameliah would neutralize her as fast as any other bronze/silver/gold plates on the planet, even if the skill was only doing 1 damage. Technically, this technique should work on monsters as well, since most of them(including the stumper) still bleed.

Adam Roundfield

Balance is for plebs. OP characters just need bigger challenges, because a nuke is still a nuke, after all is said and done, nobody wants to get MAD...

Tohron

It's a bit odd that an accolade providing 1000 heat resistance is estimated at only 6 times the value of one providing 3 cold resistance, even though the former takes 3 accolade slots. According to that algorithm, 6 of the latter accolades would be worth the same, even though they take twice as many slots and only provide 18 resistance instead of 1000. Seems like the algorithm isn't very reliable. Given that higher tier accolades appear to have some form of exponentially larger bonuses, it would make sense for the value estimation algorithm to also have exponential growth.

Anonymous

We might need a little bit of moderation. The warden mentioned that one of the main reasons Laverro turned into a murderhappy crazy bitch was because her build was rediculously powerful for a silver plate.

Anonymous

Yea that video is good. Prolly one of the most educational things I've seen on Youtube.

Ziggy

Yeah I will reluctantly give Anton those props. Archers are skewed towards being great against awakened, but she was still a tier higher and like 50% stronger levels wise.

Rebecca

I lost the game.

Andrew

I think that the part she was objecting to is his reading out the list of accolades and what they do. That would be somewhat boring to listen to.

Anonymous

The whole valuation system seems broken. As the note stated, it should really be based on the bonus divided by the number of slots (tier). An even more broken example than the one you gave is seen with The Icy Cellar and The Pride of Eker. Both are worth 2 GTs even though one gives +500 Health and the other only gives +50 Health.

Anonymous

If I were Rain, I would slot in: Southshore Rat Warren: Health +1000 (assume tier-2 uncommon) 2 slots The Icy Cellar: Health +500 (tier-2, quantity 6) 12 slots The Lair of Embers: Heat Resistance +1000 (tier-3) 3 slots Ander's Corpse: Chemical Resistance +100 (assume tier-2 uncommon) 2 slots for a general purpose configuration. I'd have 2 of the speed accolades bound so I could swap them in for heat & chemical when speed is needed. Could also swap the heat resistance (3 slots) for perception (1 slot) and "The Game" soften steps skill (2 slots) when scouting. Not much need for most of the others given his malleable ring and his force ward skill. Note that he also has a cold resistance +20 ring. It would be nice if he could get some more resistance +20 rings. Light, dark, arcane, mental. Depending on what resistance(s) Tallheart puts into his armor, maybe he does not need all four of those as rings. Actually, if he could get +20 heat and chemical as rings or armor, he could free up 5 slots and then use 2 speed accolades (4 slots) and his perception accolade (1 slot) in his general purpose configuration. I wonder if the Crimson Swords had any useful resistance rings.

Ziggy

Those +500 health accolades are not worth it compared to the strength accolades. The +20 strength accolades take up just as many slots, and (should) incidentally give +400 health. So only 100 less health but also 20 stats to strength on top. It's a shame those force resistance accolades are tier 3 but only 200 resist. I'd slot one in though so the force resist is 200 at base with how much it defends against.

Personally, I can't help but think about the massive shift once Rain gets to Level 25, even before Class choice he'll have to take the time to grind up his Skill Ranks. A total of 15 Auras at Rank 10 means a boost of 150% from Aura Synergy alone, before Class Upgrade. But after? +0.1% per Rank of Aura Synergy per Rank in all Auras, with a prospective Cap of 15. So, 0.1% × 15(Rank of Aura Synergy) × 15(# of Auras) × 15(Rank of Auras) = 337.5%(I think?). If I somehow got that wrong please tell me, I'm low on caffeine (a critical nutrient).

Anonymous

Also hoping after Rain inevitably gets Ethereal Aura and Prismatic Intent that he finally completes the seasonal Aura set(Spring, Summer and Fall/Autumn). I've been curious about Fall/Autumn's specific effects since it was first mentioned. Plus, whatever potential 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Tier Skills it might reveal.

Anonymous

He should definitely get Prismatic Intent at level 26. But Ethereal aura is lower priority, and Autumn is much lower priority. His silver rank skills should probably go like this: 26 Prismatic Intent 27 Summer 28 Life Well 29-31 Remaining 3 Ward Auras 32 Spring 33 Discombobulate

Scott Frederiksen

Has he looked at his status yet? Didn't he again a lol 1 taming skill or something from his soul companion?

Anonymous

He almost certainly have. We haven’t been shown the result. I assume that since there’s no change of significance.

Cirvante

Rain needs to learn how to use his offensive auras better. That fight against Hegar was embarassing. Using Extend before Focus was the dumbest move ever. [Edit for clarity]The priority order for which metamagics to apply on offensive auras to maximise efficiency in terms of damage-to-mana ratio is Compression>Focus>Channel Mastery>Amplify>Extend while pulsing them in bursts. With just Compression, Focus, Channel and Amplify he could have finished off Hegar with 8k DPS for 900 mana/s. I understand that SenescentSoul wanted Rain to lose and Tallheart to save the day, but that was just painful to read. Doing the math and finding the most efficient metamagic combination is something Rain used to do, but now he suddenly goes full retard?

Anonymous

Didnt even try to do the math, maybe i’m missing something, but i dont see how order matters considering they are all multipliers ? There are indeed better combinations when aiming for damage per mp, considering some metamgic have a bigger cost increase than effect increase, but its not really an order problem.

Anonymous

Has anyone else thought about how well Rain might have done in Amelia's home town(Brightside Chasm?)? I mean a Purify obsessed Dynamo in a place that relies on Purify users to function would kinda be ideal. I'm probably forgetting some critical information that refutes the idea but it finally occurred to me and I thought to share it.

Anonymous

[Troll]He'd prolly do pretty good seeing as Ameliah could survive and she couldn't even beat two bronze plates as a silver lmao[/troll]. On a more serious note, I wonder if he could teach the people how to reconfigure their purify aura. Like...if he could teach them how to update their [Filth] definition to include whatever is causing the problem, he'd prolly be seen as a hero. I don't actually remember when the heck Ameliah told us about her hometown, so this might not even be a thing.

Anonymous

Having now seen all of the Crimson Sword's Accolades, I am at a loss to explain how Hegar stood up to Rain's initial attacks so well. Before the final 1-second Refrigerate Nova, Rain hit Hegar with a few seconds of 1500 cold damage per second, and then a few seconds of 2000+ cold damage per second, and Hegar's Health was only "gradually eroded" from those attacks. Even if Hegar had all of the cold resist accolades slotted in, that is only 46 units of cold damage (per second, I assume) that he can block. Even if he had the hypothetical Intrinsic Resistance which triples that, it is still less than 150 Cold Resistance. Maybe a little more than that if he has very high Endurance, but it cannot be too high since his Class is certainly concentrating on Strength. So his Cold resistance is, at best, around 10% of the damage Rain was sending to him every second. Even if Hegar had 15,000 Health, after a few seconds of 1500 Cold damage each second I would expect his Health to be dropping more than "gradually". And then when Rain turned it up to 2000+ damage per second, I would have expected Hegar's Health to be dropping at faster than 1,000 per second, a rate which Hegar is unlikely to consider "gradual". It was only after Rain hit him with around 10K Cold damage in one second that Hegar was significantly impacted. Judging from Hegar's comments, that big 1-second hit must have taken him down from well over 10K Health to below 6K Health. That is understandable. What I cannot understand is how the several seconds each of 1500 and 2000+ damage per second did not have a stronger effect on Hegar.

Anonymous

I think it is odd that the resistance for each 10 points of Endurance is only 1 unit. Why not 10 units of damage resist for every 10 points of Endurance? That way a person can resist a non-negligible amount of damage if they concentrate on Endurance. For example, a person with 200 Endurance and the hypothetical Intrinsic Resistance skill could have 600 units of damage resistance. Not a huge amount if people are throwing around 10K damage, but it could at least make a difference if the enemies are weaker and can only manage 1000 units of damage at most. But with only 1 unit of damage resistance per 10 points of Endurance, even someone who has an Endurance-focused build can only manage 60 units of damage resistance in the example provided. That is pathetic!
