ty for the chapter

Draugluir

Some more hints about his soul there! I still like the theories that he's somehow stronger than his level because of all the extra exp.

Alexander Dupree

I can't stop grinning after that flight. :D

Luck

Great chapter, all the info was great, but the flight was the best part. Very cute.

Kendelle Trotter

I saw it!!! Fredek's getting the Passivist build!! Kung fu battle monk here we come.

Yshua

Thank you for the chapter! The bit about Rain worrying about family planning felt out of place. How for it make sense that that is on any way his problem? What would a pamphlet do?

Kendelle Trotter

It's his problem because as a delving organization without an established base of operations that needs all the manpower it can get, children and the pregnant are a liability. Of course he has to worry about it.

Daniel S

When did Vanna and Val become a thing? Was that seen at all in a chapter or just a thing that happened in the background?

Thenais

Nice flirting

I really appreciate the short time skips between chapters. I think it keeps things moving.

Adrian Gorgey

A great chapter. I really hope the respect Rain built during the Fel Sedanis isolation keeps these people loyal. There's a lot of potential for abuse if people were to join to awaken only to leave in the middle of the night. People need to pay it forward for the next group for things to work. Also excited about the printing press -- it sounds amazing, and honestly, they might even be able to make money on it considering the price of books.

Pedro Villa

Yesss, more skill tree info! I'd be surprised if you don't have at least a rough outline of a game progression tree by the end of the story. Although, I do understand that it would be chapters like this that would be the hardest to write just from all of the planning that has to go into making it. Hell, 123 chapters and we don't even really know of anything past tier 1 outside of Rain's skill trees (just snippets here and there). The crafting trees have been sorely missing from any sort of scrutiny up until now, considering how important they will be for the company. It's interesting to see how you laid them out. I wonder how Staavo's experiments are going to be augmented once they have some legit magic crafters. Also, why go for a material other than Metal Working? Is it just for availability's sake? More bones than iron in the world? What about a poaching/looting skill for improving the quality of drops from a monster? Would that be something that exists?

Andrew

Thank you!

Neih-impossible —> nigh-impossible?

They’re way past point of no return. A small group needs to be stealth focused to survive at low levels in a higher ranked zone. As the watch guard put it, “leaving they would run out of mana, stamina and health, probably in that order.” If people drop out, it will be once they’re back at an unranked zone. And if they make it to that point, they will be rich, and have a lot of (newly) awakened with them. So recruiting unawakened replacements will be easy.

Anonymous

Here’s my theory, this lair is using the mana Ameliah provided it to protect itself from attacks. Keeping up the attacks would let the unawakened break it eventually. And the mana is not showing up as strength because it’s storing the mana, wanting to respawn all challenges at once.

Boredwayfarer

Hahha if he does dual wield scimitar and have a magical panther, a copyright strike might hit

Orion Dye

Looking forward to the day when rains company has 20 platinums and becomes the defectors power in the world. Ofcourse that will be in the far distant future, but it’s something to look forward to.

Another info heavy chapter that I found very enjoyable. Always a good sign. I also liked the very human moment of Rain needing a moment to chill (HAH), and getting to play some Ranks with Tallheart. Egads there are a lot of possible crafting class paths with that information. We can understand the basics, but leaves room for all sorts of possibilities and fun surprises. On the flipside, Tarny the fanatic went with a class similar to Rain's, surprising no one. And an attempt at the passivist build? Nifty. Oh boy. Printing press. That'll piss off a lot of people in power. Cheaply educating the peasants and spreading information like that will have a massive effect. And the printing press is actually a pretty simple thing when it comes down to it, so once the idea is out there, everyone will make one. Hell yes.

Tycho Green

I was looking forward for someone eventually becoming a passivist. So many possibilities when you sprinkle in an active abilitiy like mana manipulation and elemental refinement. Maybe a weapon kata as well. Excited for what Senescent is about to think up for this character in particular.

Anonymous

I’m not sure how big deal a printing press is. They seem to have alternative methods, which might not be as cheap (aka needs awoken to work), but removes a lot of the explosive political potential of the press. After all Melm had books, and they included trivial stuff like children’s tales, and Jamus was able to loan a dictionary and bring it into the wild. All of that suggests books are accessible already.

Elmhedera

Hey, think you got some mistakes there: It was [neih-impossible >> nigh-impossible] At least I know [that's >> that] [its >> it's] coming.

Ameliah just handed us the key to the mageburn equation. People are being neutral affected by the ambient elemental mana spells generate because they aren't manually focused on excluding their own soul domain from the spell's effect. Also we get to see why Ethereal Aura would be better for charging dungeon cores. The catalyst effect auras use to generate elemental mana should be significantly more effective than manually weaving normal mana into elemental mana.

Anonymous

I don't think mageburn can be fixed with soul domain. Fire spells for example physically heat up air. This hot air has nothing to do with magic now and will do damage.

God i love this story but im in pain to wait 1 week for only 1 chapter sniff (well i guess that what we get for quality stuff) Yeah he have a lot of stuff to write on how its work (build other class/artisant class) Its a little just a little bit off ameliah talking just now about stuff soul (when they know he have a big problem on it and need know how to controle/influence/etc and she just drop a "bomb" now ("yeah i encapsule your soul with mine so i can use my spell influence on you ("control of your soul to use the spell")" Excuse me if you can do some mesure of control why did you never tell poor rain who is on complete wowo blind for his condition of his soul and how to fix it (controle/manipulate)

Anonymous

lovely chapter, hope they bang

Ziggy

Man. You are a dog with a bone with that concept. Anything within even spitting distance and you try to connect it to ethereal aura being used to charge cores. Stop trying to jam every shape of peg into your extremely specific hole lol.

Wish there was a compilation pdf with all the chapter together. Am a new patron and its a pain downloading 100+ pdfs to read.

Pyrefiend

Fredek the passivist, we shall watch your career with great interest.

Derrick McDowell

Or just the text like the other patrons do. Super nice when you get the text to your e-mail.

giom

You can use calibre with the fanficfare plugin to download the chapters from royal road, then get the 8 or so remaining chapters on patreon. Not ideal but it's what I did and works rather well...

LEMON

Yeah, why hasn't Ameliah told Rain more about this soul encapsulation. I'm sure when Rain asked for help with his soul litterally any info would be helpful.

Chris

Are there Dwarves in this story?

Off the top of my head, reasons for woodworking: making bows and arrows, buildings, siege weapons, boats

just saying... enchanted bolt cutters or a portable guillotine that can be used horizontally. cant be used against tallhearts people but still packs a punch enough to wound a monster or a dungeon core.

Anonymous

I ship it. I wonder if Tallheart would be willing to make an enchanted dagger of +1 dark damage then hang onto it just to break cores.

matticide FOWD

People would use the bolt cutters to take trophies

Anonymous

I'm not so sure about the enchanted weapon theory. Tallhart broke a dungeon core with his bare hands, remember? My personal theory is it's more about bringing the core within your paling to force an override of it's innate defenses in order to damage one. Hmmm but even that has a heckofalotta holes in it. It's prolly as simple as cores, like monsters, have a certain base resistance, and the unawoken will need a way to deal an immense amount of damage to compensate. Like, a hydraulic, steam-powered hammer would prolly work as well as an enchanted weapon would.

Pebble

You're on to something. This may not be the first time an issue like this comes up, so instead of having to come up with a weapon each time, they could just have Tallheart make a specialized Core Breaker tool that is deliberately made too unwieldy to be used as a weapon against another person. They wouldn't then need to destroy it after use, but could just keep it around for next time.

Anonymous

@Hubris Ahh but by manually excluding your soul domain, you would dissociate the mageburn effect from the environmental effect. In other words, Rain's armor would now absorb the ambient fire mana. Excluding the vast amount of ambient mana from the equation would significantly lower the backlash associated with his spells(probably). He could also heighten this effect by keeping an accolade hidden on his person prior to casting, as the initial testing with them showed they act like mana black holes, pulling all the mana in the environment into a seemingly endless pit. Sure the air will still be really freakin hot, but without the mana I don't think the net effect after resistance applies would be anywhere near what we've seen previously. Similarly, if Jamus employed the same tactic of excluding his soul domain, all he would need is a metal gauntlet to absorb the ambient arcane mana to avoid the localized paralysis effect of his charged bolt.

reji

Yeah, but Tall-bro have hundreds of Str, while unawakened - like what, ten?

Anonymous

But if they all believe in the power of friendship, then maybe....actually you're probably right. The power difference between a physical specialist awakened and some average joes has to be astronomical. much more than an enchanted weapon or shoddy steam engine could likely overcome. Maybe if they make an enchanted, single-use(so they can't use it against his people), steam-powered cannon...

Anonymous

Or maybe just send in Special Agent Dozer to eat the core.

Anonymous

It's likely she doesn't know anything about how to fix it. The watch people told Rain the condition is super rare, and that the solution to it requires a deep look inside your own soul. They also mentioned the way to fix it is different for each person. Though, I can't recall a moment when Rain ever asked her about it, so it might be good to do so to cover all his bases since the awoken don't feel the menacing aura he's constantly putting out.
