Surprise!

I’m going to be away next week, so I decided to post the chapter a day early. That way, I can fix the typos before I go, rather than let them weigh on me for the entirety of my socially-distant and internet-free vacation. The idea is to relax, after all.

The chapter after this one will be posted at the usual time. Stay safe out there.

Surprise! I'm gonna read it! Have fun!

John Settler

This was a nice surprise.

Reading the latest chapter like “pile onto the tank!” https://youtu.be/Et1SkVldiHI

Andrew

Thank you and have fun!

Adrian Gorgey

The start of something great. Searching for survivors is a great starting quest, a good way to familiarize everyone with their role, fix any remaining logistical glitches, and set the general tone for the company. I love the white-cammo coats, btw. Excited to see all the possible upgrades on the forgewagon - hopefully they can rig up a cryst-powered engine that's relatively efficient eventually. Combine engineering and enchanting.

Adrian Gorgey

The one thing I worry about, with this set up, is that because they have so many people, the payout for each quest has to be very substantial in order to be worth it. However, for now at least, they only have to firepower of a mid-grade party of adventurers - arguably less, since they need to protect all of their unpowered members. That sharply limits the danger and risk of the tasks they can undertake. So unless they can figure out some unexploited income source to make things profitable, it'll be like taking a mid-grade adventurer company and splitting the lot 50 ways instead of 8. Still, I have trust that you've got some interesting plot-threads worked up, these are just the thoughts that have occurred to me this chapter.

SunderGoldmane

you made me think I had forgot what day it was and i had a mild heart attack over the thought i might have missed going into work.

Awesome chapter, I loved the description of the forgewagon lol. I really look forward to some lair grinding

I often thought that Aura Compression was a mistake, a bit of over specialising. Something to get later not immediately. Now I really think that, imagine how much trouble rain would have saved if he unlocked and acquired Fall instead.

"It was as if the entire logical underpinning of reality had been shredded and thrown into constant flux. " Something... Something... Abstraction layers... Something... Something... Occlusion culling...

Hmhm, i thought he would make a steam powerd car, not one driven by muscle power. x) Hope the speach is now realy over, using up whole chapters while nothing happens...

Sam4005

Ghost Division was ruining while reading the first part. It was awesome.

Thenais

too much gears and steampunk engineering stuff.

And the status page? Could have just listed change to mana manipulation...months and that’s about it. Seems obvious his soul damage is the issue. Noted still hasn’t addressed how he can’t add alcolades...and whether he’s still hauling around the ones he can’t use. That would have been real progress...

The part about Soulspace having non-euclidean geometry(4D or 5D) combined with the statement about reality in his soul being uncertain in this chapter leads me to believe the system itself and Rain's soul are Quantum Computers, rather than a normal ones. Hopefully this isn't the case, since the exact mechanics of how Quantum Computers use qubits, essentially bits that exist in the quantum uncertainty state of simultaneously being a 0 and 1 in order to achieve processing power hundreds of millions of times faster than the fastest super-computers would be lost on 99.999% of people. OP did mention Rain's previous job had to do with computers though, so I guess it's possible. It would, however, explain a few things such as how a system can feasibly govern every action/reaction of every human/monster on the planet AND how it was able to devise a hybrid control panel between to incompatible operating systems in a few seconds.

She didn’t though, they had a fight because her mother was leaving her behind since she’s now a wanted criminal.

Michael Hughes

Great chapter. I don't know enough about cars to enjoy the technical descriptions at the beginning. The caravan is about to depart which is very exciting. Story progress is good but I wish there was more build progress. 1 second in the soul a few points in tolerances and synergies and level 9 for mana manipulation are nice but I want to identify the accolades and find the hidden skills. See you next time.

I generally enjoy this story, but this chapter was disappointing. It was an entire chapter of "tell don't show". Pages and pages of gear porn about the forgewagon, more pages of status windows, another page of names and a few words of nearly useless description. The most interesting part was the speech and by the time we got to it I was so disinterested that I couldn't really get invested. I did like the company name; it was the perfect choice.

Anonymous

Yea I found myself skipping about 1/5th of the chapter. The entire sequence with the wagon could have been skipped if OP had just shown the damn thing working along with a throw-away line alluding to how the process of Rain teaching people things from his world is finally starting to pay dividends.

David Zimmerle

The longer it goes the more hyped and curious I get about what his class evolution will be. He has to have something special with all the crap he’s done+plus his damaged soul bit+having unlocked so many trees.

Newguy Roy

there [was] enough play in the tracks to drive over small rocks,

Ziggy

We're only guessing that the other seasons are needed to unlock it. But if the guess is correct, he would have had to invest 3 more points into getting fall. Besides aura compression, that means 2 other of his skills getting nixed as well. As awesome as the seasons and Fall are? Not worth it currently.

Ziggy

Well now we have concrete levels for some people for comparison. Literally everyone except Ameliah and Tallheart are lower leveled than Rain. By a good margin. Makes it much more obvious why everyone considers Rain weak in comparison to other awakened of the same level. The last few chapters have made it more obvious why, culturally, people don't explore support roles/skills/builds compared to going full offense. Makes the world and them avoiding a build like Rain's much more believable. Especially when combined with the implied threat of slavery to those stronger than you if you're a support.

anyone else noticing patreon is frequently misplacing the like clicks to other posts? a fair % of the time, when I look at the page a few minutes later it shows the filled in heart on a completely diff post, and not on the one I clicked....

Pyrefiend

I really hope something cool happens when Rain maxes mana manipulation. Seeing hidden skills is good and all, but as mentioned in the chapter, it would really just be a tease.

Anonymous

Come on Rain, don't fall to the siren song of magical utility. Stick it out and get 4 defensive auras and 3 offensives for that sweet, sweet maxed specializations.

Ole Halvorsen

ofc he will go 4defensive and 3 offensive auras, but that does not mean it will be interesting to see what type of skills mana manipulation rank 10 opens up, it could change his potential build up in the future, and there is many of us who has made builds up to lvl 40+ and getting new skills is always interesting to see what is out there.

Anonymous

I wonder why Rain still deems bigger mana pool useless after his fight with Reaper, where he spend most of his mana in few seconds. Not to mention his force ward, capable of draining his mana pool instantly given strong enough attack.

Loipers

They are heading out the following morning? There will probably be two more chapters before the expedition arc actually starts: one for interpersonal communication over the night and morning, and another for some big wigs discussions and how the people of Fel Sadanis see Ascension. I really do like this story, but the meandering pace defeats any momentum the plot builds. P.S. - Do we know if aura range is affected by Aura Synergy, or if 18 meters the usual for a lvl 10 aura? This is vitally important for imagining how all the multipliers affect Rain's OPness in future arcs, as the 10 -> 15 skill cap boost combined with the increased number of auras he will have will cause Aura Compression to d e s t r o y everything.

Ole Halvorsen

Yes Aura Synergy effect both dmg and range, so combined with aura compression raising Aura Synergy with the power of 2 really mean that you can do 4 times the dmg

Minitiative

It's fascinating how several point of views in regards to the development of society seem to click in the story. Rain, coming from a first world society where science was used to advance the cause of civilization as a whole, looks at this world, sees what he's capable of in support, and sees incredible amounts of waste. Why are there so many unawakened? Why are so few of them supporting society, opting instead to be self serving? It seems like Rain's grand mission for the story is to find a way to alleviate or fix this problem. On the flipside we do know the old adage of power corrupting, etc. so when you can have individuals who can exhibit such domination of their peers at just the BRONZE level, let alone silver up to platinum, of course civilization stunts and power then becomes a means to simply protect yourself from the bigger fish. My prediction, in the far future of the story, is that Rain will find the trick to awakening others. At what cost this be is going to be the weird part.

Simon

I dislike the democracy premisse. Makes no sense to me. Rain was the one who decided who was going to be part of the company in the first place. Rain paid for everything. But now wants ppl to give equal voice in everything? And basically hands everything over? What happens if some people get greedy and vote him out to take away his tank for example and generally do lots of things he disagrees with? Does he get his money back? Will he leave and make a new company? What happens if they vote against democratical values? If they vote ppl in that are against him and his values? This whole thing would need a 'constitution' to have a chance of working at all. Even then there are lots of issues.

Anonymous

Rain would just go back to being a regular adventurer, abeit one who lost a bunch of time, dosh, and intellectual property, but learned a valuable lesson about trust. If the sheeple want to dispose a fair and benevolent warlord in favor of another corrupt asshat, they can go right ahead.

Anonymous

Backfire effect, maybe? When people are proven wrong they often double down and refuse to accept it because it would mean admitting to themselves that they were wrong. Rain is likely doing the same.

CentaureHeart

Really enjoyed this chapter :)

#BugReport Some of the math appears to be off in the attributes table on the status page on page 9 The effective stats of RCV and VGR does not match with the synchronization. RCV: the effective value should be 54*0,44=23,76 according to the synchronization or the synchronization should be 15/54=28% according to the effective value VGR: the effective value should be 62*0,47=29,14 according to the synchronization or the synchronization should be 19,7/62=32% according to the effective value

Great chapter! Excited for the hidden skills as a result of maxing mana manipulation. Also the reflection by rain on bonds/links in regards to party rules was interesting.

Ole Halvorsen

no he is right and your missunderstading how to calculate sync. any buff going above his tolerance or buff stat can not be calculated in to check his effective stats. So it's not 54*0.44 but 34*0.44 that is what you need to use to calculate. I think your mistake is a common one, but a if you buff a stat more than your tolerance you will not get the effect. Lets run an example. If you have a strength tolerance of 30 and 50%sync, this will show up under buff of 0/30 and you put on a strength ring that gives you 50 strength 50/30. you will have a total of 60 strength, or 1200 health pool, and (30+10)x0.5 = 20 effective strength.

What a great chapter!
