Hey All,

I got some great feedback on the last Alternate Bard post, so I made a few small (but good) changes to the class to reflect the feedback there. Check it out!

Alternate Bard v1.1.1

  • Folklore // Opened up to any skill (not just Bard class skills).
  • Magical Secrets // Clarified wording
  • Mythic Secrets // NEW feature (basically 6th and 7th level Magical Secret).
  • Fool // Fool’s Luck // Removed attack rolls.
  • Loremaster // Wondrous Success // Now just makes the d20 roll a 20.
  • Spells // New Bard Spells // Adjusted material components to remove gold cost.
  • Conspirator // Devious Strike // New feature (replaced Extra Attack).
  • Mesmer // Wondrous Performance // Clarified the duration.

Alternate Bard by laserllama

An elderly man in an extravagant purple coat stepped out of the shadows into the middle of the giant lord's stronghold. With the eyes of all his foes on him, he began to play a masterful song ridiculing the frost giant lord.

Just wanted to let you know the text on Wondrous Success says it turns a d20 into a d20! Also, glad to be back :)

Mythic Secrets is definitely a huge improvement over Mythic Performance. Thanks!

I've really enjoyed your work on the Alternate Bard so far, and I will definitely offer my players to choose this class. However, I find the Conspirator's new "Devious Strike" feature to be a poor substitute for "Extra Attack". While it's more flavorful, and emulating "Sneak Attack" seems like a good fit for the Conspirator, it's a big nerf RAW. A rogue can reliably trigger "Sneak Attack" by getting advantage with their bonus action, either by hiding, by a subclass feature, or by the "Steady aim" feature. A conspirator on the other hand can quite easily be neutered depending on the situation, with no reliable way to trigger "Devious Strike".

Also, I'm kind of curious now what the Alternate versions of TCoE subclasses will be called. College of Eloquence would probably be Diplomat, but I'm not sure if Composer or Innovator works better for College of Creation. ...It's hard coming up with synonyms for "creator" that don't sound more like a wizard or artificer than a bard.

I am so excited to try this out! One question: how would you do a Spirits Bard?
