Hey all, not sure how you all feel about the direction the newest player races are taking, but I thought it'd be fun to take a crack at redesigning them using the style of the 5e PHB.

I've also run them through the ever-popular "5e detect balance sheet" used by brewers everywhere to create player races balanced against official content.

As always, I'd love to get your feedback!

Astral Elf: This is now a subrace of actual Elves (kinda weird that it wasn't). To keep them balanced I removed their (strange) swappable proficiencies as I felt it was the least thematic of their abilities.

Autognome: Brought these bad boys in line with actual Gnomes and Warforged. I combined a few abilities into Specialized Design. Again, this one was way more powerful than any official race.

Giff: Love these guys, but the UA did them dirty. I brought them up to speed with the gigantic colonial gun-toting hippos from days of yore.

Hadozee: Again, these guys were way too powerful and straight-up had Thief Rogue's subclass abilities (not cool!). I've reimagined them slightly giving advantage on certain skills in specific situations. Monkey-on!

Plasmoid: These things are so weird that I'm not sure if they are balanced for most games, but I took a crack at dialing them back a bit. I really leaned into the amorphous nature of these blob-folk.

Thri-Kreen: Also fairly weird and monstrous, these guys had too many powerful abilities. I Removed a few small things and scaled back their telepathy.

Appreciate you doing these, they were definitely done dirty. Then again I guess that's what UA's for. I don't know much about it, think these are for Spelljammer?

I still don't know why Thri-Kreen are monstrosities when they used to be humanoids... The races in the UA barely align with the monster statblocks, making you wonder if they even read their own things, let alone reading the lore... Anyway, good job on scaling them back, a lot of the races are still on the strong side, but now they don't make warforged look like default humans (the non variant kind)...

They are remaking a lot of the monster stats block, so maybe they decided to transition Thri-Kreen from Humanoids to Monstrosities. I'm okay with this chance, honestaly, but I 100% percent get what you are saying. All I know is that the next game I DM, any Centaur or Minotaur will now be Monstrosities, because yes
