Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 16 of Vinland Saga!  WHOA!!!!!
I have to say, that is not what I thought was going on at first!  I really thought Gardar had left and taken Arnheid with him!  But wow, Sverkel is SO REAL for all his help!!!  And dang, Einar and Thorfinn putting it all on the line to help, they're the best as well!  The decoy plan would've been good if Snake wasn't so clever.  But WOW guys, I never thought we'd have the ghost of Askeladd show up at this pivotal moment for Thorfinn's character, dang!!!!!  What now?!?!?!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

The Ketil thing— yes, as much as he needs her, that's not love. It's convenient for his dilemma. He doesn't mean to be, but it is somewhat selfish. And for Arnheid, I mean her husband comes back, and she is pregnant with her owner's child. She never thought she'd see him again, and then all this happens. Even though it's not her fault, she feels like she's betrayed him in some way. Seeing him differently, yet hearing an inkling of his old self brought hope to her. And having no time to think, and with poop already on the wall, she most likely just ran on that dream of wanting to go back to how it used to be. She knows no good can happen by fighting the situation they were placed in, but who wouldn't want to try to go back after all that's happened? I hope they make it out. Thorfinn! Fights are bound to happen. In a perfect world, there would be no war. As Canute said, let's at least pick out spots. It's blurry, for sure. Snake has his reasons, like Thorfinn. Weirdly, Askeladd is “back,” but he's ironically the bridge that could draw the line between what's necessary and not. I don't know what will happen, but I'm honestly happy to see Thorfinn doing that stance because at least now he isn't doing it out of hatred and anger. There's an actual reason behind it. I'm hoping Sverkel can talk to Snake down. BTW Sverkel is the ultimate MVP!!!!

That's the thing, like I don't doubt he's really sincere in how he feels so strongly for her, but it's selfish at the end of the day. Exactly, like she must be feeling all kinds of things! That's such a great way to sum it up, in the heat of the moment she really just acted on that glimmer of hope. I hope they make it out too! OMG Thorfinn!!! That's the thing, I don't know if there will ever be a world totally without war or violence. It's crazy to see Askeladd being the voice of reason or whatnot here. That's true, I mean there is actual reason and feeling behind his fighting this time around, if he does choose to fight. I hope Sverkel can get through to snake too!!! Omg he's such a real one right?!!?!?

What a great episode I love it a lot. It’s a little funny but I think it’s also fun to describe things in historical fiction as canon and not canon instead of real & not real. Thors being at the end of the opening is a nice touch because it not only represents his father always being with him but also his father could be considered a representation of his hopes & dreams so it might be a way to say that his hopes and dreams will never die. You can really feel the urgency as both of them are running to Sverkel’s house worried about Arnheid with Einar desperately wanting to do something for her if he doesn’t know what yet. I think most people were surprised that Arnheid was at the house acting normally after what happened last episode but once we realize what’s going on it makes a lot of sense that she’s putting on an act as the best way to protect Gardar. I like being able to see Snake with so much focus this episode showing even more why he is the leader of the guests. I love how much trust Arnheid has in Thorfinn & Einar when she immediately tells them what happened. I like how she starts out explaining things calmly before she slowly begins to break down because it is realistic & to me shows that part of her demeanor is a mask that allowed her to hold back all of these emotions but I love how she never lost the kindness at her core. It’s so sad to hear what was going through her mind after the immediate worry of death. I have a lot of empathy for her seeing the man she fell in love with when looking into his eyes. It’s understandable that seeing all the sadness in his eyes awoke this desire deep inside her to want to start a new life with him & the new baby after silently suffering for a very long time. The way she talks about that desire as some sort of impossible dream once again shows the hopelessness of a slave & it’s an interesting comparison with Thorfinn & Einar’s “impossible” dream of a place without war/slavery. Because even if a dream is impossible people can’t stop dreaming because if we do that is when we truly give up. I think the show does a great job at presenting the tragic nature of what Gardar & Arnheid have gone through but I don’t think the pain of the current situation would be as effective if not for her incredible performance that really hammers home the grief/pain that I would describe as crushing/smothering her. I am so impressed by the ability of voice actors to be able to do a realistic cry while also acting the way she almost sounds like she can barely choke out the words is insanely impressive & then you have to consider the amount of control the VA has to have to be able to be understood while mimicking full on bawling. I don’t know the VA’s name but they deserve an award if they haven’t got one from other performances. This scene is another reason I said she is the best new VA this season. Also don’t take my word for it because I might be wrong but I think the music that plays while she is letting out her emotions and the boys decide to help her is the same music that played when Askeladd died & his final words to Thorfinn were basically what will you do with your life now which is a great music choice. I like Thorfinn being smart by pretending to do chores while actually talking. I think it’s good that Thorfinn & Einar are being realistic about how dangerous things are while still wanting to help her however they can. It really shows the kind of man Sverkel is that probably without many questions he helped hide Gardar right under Snake’s nose. Her love for Gardar really shows here with her being willing to fight for a life with her husband even with how hard the path forward will be. I love how our boys are immediately ready to help & come up with a dangerous but good plan. It’s a small scene but I really love this conversation between Snake & Sverkel about slavery & how slaves are unlucky and how he doesn’t have the same belief as many people during this time that slaves are just inferior people who deserve this place in the world. It’s really brave to go against the norm like this. Also while I’m sure he had this belief before but I think he came to this thought because of his interactions with Thorfinn & Einar as well as just his observations throughout his life. It’s so interesting that Sverkel has had a kind of similar and thought process to Thors that you should throw away your sword. What a powerful moment for him to want to give his farm to Snake & tell him to grow life because he thinks that would help him more than the life he leads now. It shows the deep friendship they have that Sverkel can tell Snake has problems that have led him to this life & wants a better life for him. Also I definitely think Snake agrees with these beliefs even if not completely because of what we have seen of his character in this season. Unfortunately because of the messed up situation with a lot of his men dead Snake just doesn’t care right now. Also I liked how without the information we as the audience have Snake’s plan is to use Arnheid as a way to draw in her husband which is a smart plan with what he know. Also it’s pretty funny to see him throw a cup at one of his men to keep them alert. I like how the author used the fact that they purposely made Einar & Gardar similar looking as part of this plan to use Einar as a distraction. It’s cool that Thorfinn can be so still that bugs are not bothered by him. Sverkel is a badass for going above and beyond with the help he is offering to come along in the cart to go unquestioned what a guy. Yeah I don’t think Thorfinn & Einar are planning on not getting caught with this plan of theirs they are most likely just willing to face whatever punishment is to come as long as are able to help Arnheid & Garldar escape. It sucks that the plan would have gone off without a hitch if only Snake was not so intelligent. It’s great in terms of story writing but I feel bad for Thorfinn facing his first real challenge after his vow of pacifism. What a complex & interesting question of what is the right path to being a true warrior violence in defense of another or staying a pacifist. I love that Askeladd appears in this pivotal moment talking about everyone having their own reasons for what they do when you think about the complex reasons Askeladd did things & Canute is doing things. And the tough part is that Thoifinn doesn’t have time to think & isn’t willing to let someone else die so he probably felt he had no choice. It’s sad that he in this position but it’s awesome from a character standpoint that he’s doing exactly what his father did for him when his father fought all those Vikings barehanded at the start of this show. Like his father it shows how strong & skilled Thorfinn is that he is able to fight against someone who is armed without using weapons himself. Even though I do feel bad for him it’s genuinely cool to see him summon up the old Thorfinn with that dagger stance not only because of the great animation & epic visit but because it’s for a good cause which is the name of the episode. I love that we can see how conflicted he’s about this but the resolve to protect someone as well thanks to the amazing facial expressions. I haven’t talked about the new ending yet while I think the last ending has better imagery I have a hard time saying one of the songs is better than the other because both ending songs are perfect for this season. Calling Sverkel a real one is perfect :-). I’m glad the comments are able to enhance your experience including mine I hope. It’s really fun that you are going at a good pace with this show instead of binging it makes the experience better as a watcher of your content. I might as well join in with the other comments & say the next two episodes are going to hurt you and I am preemptively saying sorry about that I hope you are as ready as you can be. One other thing I want to say is that haters are missing out by not thinking more deeply about this story. It’s unfortunate that there are too many people out there without good critical thinking skills/good media literacy. I am thankful that there are many people like you who are able to see the greatness & value of this story because it deserves the praise it gets. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Yeah it's weird to think there's so many real elements even in a story that's technically not real! That walk to Sverkel's was so tense. Arnheid breaking down was so painful!!! I couldn't agree more about the VA! And that's an excellent point about Arnheid's dream of having a family again running parallel to Thorfinn's dream of founding a new nation. OMG Sverkel is such a real one!!! He legit is willing to think outside the norm and really question slavery too. And the way he went above and beyond to help too. I think Snake questions it all more than he lets on too. I love the idea of Sverkel wanting him to focus on life instead of violence. Thorfinn and Einar are so real too for going into this knowing they'll almost definitely get caught. Askeladd showing up was amazing! So true that this is similar to what Thors did, having to fight to protect. Thorfinn hitting the dagger pose was so sick!!!! Hahha I just read the part of your comment about my calling Sverkel a real one and I actually did it here in my reply too lol! I was for sure not ready for the next ones even if I thought I was haha but man were they good. Aw thank you for your compliments!!! I'm really happy you enjoy my analysis and discussion of these eps and some of the themes/concepts/etc.!! I really appreciate it and I couldn't agree more that this show is so peak!!!! Thanks again ^_^
