Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction to episode 22 of Vinland Saga!  Wow, just when I thought we knew Askeladd....we REALLY get to know Askeladd!!!  Dang, what is it with this show and having no real good/bad guys?!?!  I see so many similarities between him and Thorfinn, but the biggest difference is the way they've handled their revenge missions and the differences in how they see the world.  Thorfinn has tunnel vision on revenge and is clouded by his rage.  Askeladd sacrificed all that emotion and did what he had to do to get his revenge, basically becoming someone else in the process.  What does this mean for Thorfinn?!  Will he start down a new path after this?  Will he "learn" anything as Askeladd suggested??  Can't wait to find out!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

The thing that Thorfinn has going against him is he is still a teenager. He is able to learn from his experiences but it is real hard to break free from that thing that drives him. He made this idealistic promise of revenge when he was six years old and he feels like if he doesn't follow through that would be disrespectful of his father. So you mix the naïve idealism of a child with hardcore teen angst and it isn't hard to see why he gets manipulated so easily. To break away from that now would be admitting he was wrong to even start down this path. So he just keeps on going and things keep getting worse.

well.. Askeladd could give Thorfinn some slack that he want to kill him in fair duel.. :D Askeladd would too never kill his father in fair duel.. :D that is like the only slack i am giving to Thorfinn.. but other than that Askeladd is right..

Man, you were right on the dot with whole blinding rage and temper notion.

Very true! Such a great point that the mix of childhood naivety and teen angst does not help him out here. And true that if he stops now, he would see all of this as wrong/a waste in the first place. Talk about a downward spiral!

Well, that is a fair point!!! At least Thorfinn is fighting fair....but I think the way Askeladd sees it, there's a difference between right/fair and effective, perhaps!
