Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of episode 2 of the final season of AoT!  So, we get a lot more info about Reiner, what's the plan is for our crew, etc. in this one.  I was so interested in seeing more of Reiner's perspective and current mental state!  And he and Gabi are related?!  And Galliard is the brother of the kid who got eaten?!?!  I loved getting deeper into this side of the world as we prep to reunite the two stories sometime soon (hopefully).  I also find it interesting that if you started the story off here, Reiner would be the main character, and you could explore what he had been through inside the walls in flashbacks!!!  Just a thought!  Can't wait for more!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Another great one, a lot of stuff here. First off, nice one about Grice. They don't drop same names like that for nothing. Falco Grice and his brother, Colt, are indeed related to this Grice. About the first time we saw Galliard, I see you were intringued, but with the conversation going on, you didn't have time to realised it. But this girl, Pieck, is the Cart Titan (hence her line about forgetting the bypedal thing after being in titan form for 2 months). And about being caught in a conversation, did you just miss the guy jumping from the roof ? Ahah ! A few second later : "I heard it was a soldier". It seems that one of this soldier suffering from PTSD choose a quick way out... Poor guy. And about the diner conversation with Reiner, really, potato girl ? Is this the best he could find to describe thoose horrible demons ? Hence the reaction of the mother. None of what he said depicted them as devils, contrary to his assesment. His monologue could pass as very sarcastic, but the thing is, Reiner didn't seem to realize this himself. The mother did catch the contradiction here, and couldn't have his son depicted them as normal human beings. Closing the window after that might be because of the wind. Might also be to prevent anyone hearing how Reiner described this "demons". About the visuals, there was some really good use of "3D camera" work here, and some rotoscoped moment. Really beautiful. Not so much during the Udo's scene (with the prisonners being loaded on the boat), some movments seemed kinda chopped. But overall, it was a really great job ! Oh ! And we had a classic "Not yet" from Zeke here ! He couldn't resist lol. Nice reaction as always, can't wait for next week !

The funny thing about that scene with Reiner at the dinner table is that when his family asks him what the island is like they're expecting to hear horror stories of these terrible people and the atrocities they've committed to which Reiner responds with a funny, harmless story about a girl stealing a potato and then sharing half of it whilst listing basic personality traits about some of the people there like forgetting why they went to the bathroom, caring about other people, etc. It's all BS, he knows it's BS but sells it as if he's being serious. The last expression he makes before saying that being there was true hell was amazing. The shocked face of his mother shows him that he was being a lot more open and honest about his experience there then he was intending so he quickly stops talking. After all if word got out that he was talking positively about the "Devils of Paradis" things probably wouldn't end well for him and his family. He totally realizes how absurd his words are and I love it. Probably my favourite scene from this episode. Along with the family scene I also loved the ones with Reiner and Falco and Reiner and Galliard. With Falco it was basically a forceful warning to him about how dangerous saying negative things about Marley is. Reiner even says at the end that he needs to rescue Gabi from the dark future that awaits them, making Falco realise that even he doesn't seem to believe that inheriting the titans is an actual honor and like him sees it as a horror that just leads to disaster. That line especially stuck with Falco because he knows if anyone had overheard him say it or Falco told anyone it would go badly for Reiner. Hence why afterwards Falco then questions Reiner's intentions and whether he wants to actually save the Eldian people from their current situation. In the case of his family like I said earlier if he were to speak honestly and positively about Paradis and the people there to his family, if word of that got out like Gabi, a naive child. repeating/spreading what he had said for example, it would end badly for all of them since they'd likely be punished for supporting the Devils of Paradis and be seen as allies or Elidan restorationists. This is exactly what Grisha's father was worried about when Grisha was mad about Faye being killed by those Marleyan officers, his own daughter had just been killed but he basically just told Grisha to accept it and keep on living a quiet and simple life in complete submission to Marley since speaking up could get their entire family killed. Then finally with Galliard, he was speaking slightly out of line about Marley's plans and openly disagreeing with him so Reiner intentionally cut him off and said that he fully supported the plan, since unlike Galliard he had picked up on Zeke's subtle hint he gave them that they were being listened in on. So yeah in all these cases Reiner is basically trying to save everyone's asses by acting like Marley's loyal dog that he was raised to be. Once again, very reminiscent of Grisha's father and how Grisha called him a dog obeying his master's command for submitting to Marley even after losing his daughter.

Also good job picking up on the Grice surname. It was the name of one of the Eldian Restorationists in Grisha's gang who got sent to Paradis. When they were on the wall he berated Grisha for failing them since he blamed Zeke's betrayal on him. He was then kicked off the wall by that horrible Sergeant and was chased down by the other members they transformed into titans. This can also further characterize Falco's character since it makes sense why he doesn't buy into Marley's propaganda and believe in it like Gabi does since his family actually has a history of being part of an Eldian resistance movement. Compared to Gabi's family who completely buy into the propaganda which shows the environment she's been rasied in and why she so strongly believes in Marley's propaganda. I'm not completely sure about this but I believe Grice may have been Falco's uncle.

Also in case you didn't notice Pieck, the warrior with long black hair and sleepy eyes is the Cart Titan, the one who was with Zeke last season and the one who had turrets on their back last episode. The funny thing is that the reason she has a crutch is because as she said she was made to stay in titan form for 2 months so she kinda forgot how to walk on 2 legs since her legs would obviously be really week after not using them for that long. That's why when the Warriors had that meeting she was sprawled out on the sofa like a cat. There's also a comedic scene that got cut out of this episode where when Galliard is on his way to the meeting he suddenly looks down and sees Pieck crawling on all fours like her titan form which scares the life out of him, as he's regaining his breath he asks her what the hell she's doing to which she responds saying it feels more natural to her lol. She's cute and quirky, I really like her. Sorry for all these comments btw.

In the manga, I thought it was a lot more obvious that Reiner's story about Paradis was meant to be subversive. He's like "yeah, they're awful... here's a bunch of silly stories about them". It's also possible that he was trying to get Gabi to subtly think about the "Devils" differently, even just a bit; yet Reiner's reaction when he realizes how open he's being implies that maybe he didn't mean to do that at all. Point is: yes, even if he didn't process it consciously, Reiner clearly doesn't think of the Paradis people as anything close to "Devils".

Almost no one caught the bit of info about Grice. You are an expert now delving and dissecting this story, characters and mythology! :D They are adding a lot of psychological and emotional baggage to the story and characters we thought we knew. Black and white now becomes gray. The dinner scene, when Reiner describes his former friends, is wistful, melancholic, and subversive. What he describes are not devils, but everyday people. In the manga it shows us images of each of his friends as he describes them, perhaps as Reiner remembers them. It was more obvious there that he missed those times, perhaps because he did care for them, even if he intended to kill them, as Bertholdt himself said.

I caught the Grice info after watching the episode for the third time with friends.... along with other things ;)

Great reaction as always... I think.... thats all I want to say for now, may be in the future I'll tell u something else lol. but well done catching that Grice info btw

1st off I loved the reaction. I love that this season is so focused on showing that in a war both sides are just people. And yes Marley is clearly in the wrong and is doing terrible things but that’s really just the government and military the Marleyen civilians and Eldians are really just normal but are extremely indoctrinated because of years of propaganda and discrimination. Now to talk about Reiner who is now in my top 10 characters though I’m not sure exactly where I would rank him. I always found the Titan shifters as I call them interesting but to see 1 of them explored so deeply from a psychological standpoint makes me love him as a character so much. Also I know a lot of people already talked about this in the comments but the dinner scene is 1 of my favorite scenes possibly in the entire series. I know it’s animation but the way it mimics a camera slowly panning to Reiner as he talks while the sound slowly fades away until only a droning sound at least I think that’s what it is remains. I love how he is talking about the people on the island being evil but then just starts telling a mundane story talking about regular people. This is supposed to be ironic and subversive and even if Reiner doesn’t completely realize it himself he’s just destroying the indoctrination and propaganda and any idea of things being black and white. It’s just depressing to think about this character and everything he’s gone through especially him honestly thinking of people on the island as friends and having trouble reconciling that with the indoctrination. And this really reminds me of the whole thing of Grisha’s father pushing his beliefs on him and then in turn Grisha pushed his beliefs on Zeke. It’s just chilling how well the indoctrination works and like you said in reality we know this can happen. Also it seems like he’s trying to protect people from saying things that might be construed as against Marley it happens twice this episode and might have happened in the past or in the future. I love that they bring up PTSD/emotional trauma because I’m not a psychologist but I’m almost 100% sure Reiner has that and is going through that from him having nightmares and flashbacks as well as some of his actions. Also does that scene at the end with training remind you of the training the scout cadets went through early on in the show I don’t think that’s a coincidence I think it’s deliberate. I’m so glad someone else caught the Grice thing it makes me feel less crazy for catching this. I almost forgot but I love Pieck she’s cute and quirky. Also almost all Titan shifters can’t stay in Titan form but the fact that she did so for 2 months makes me think that might be the special ability of the cart Titan. Also the reveal of the final Titan we didn’t know the identity of is revealed and it sounds awesome and terrifying the Warhammer Titan. I have no idea what it’s powers might be but I’m interested and extremely anxious to find out. That’s all I have to say besides how amazing the music and all around sound was. I can’t wait to see the next episode and your reaction to it. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Yay, thank you so much!!!! I'm so happy I caught that about Grice, I miss so much lol, what are the odds?!?! XD Ahhhh okay, I was wondering which one Pieck was, sorry for missing it! I totally missed the poor person jumping off a roof!!! Yikes!!! :O I know, I was kinda thinking that about Reiner, I couldn't tell if the tone was that he was genuinely traumatized, or that these were all really silly examples!!! I think I even started to say "really, this was the best you could come up with" but not sure if I got the whole thought out in the reaction. That's interesting that the mom closed the window to prevent anyone from hearing the way he was describing these so-called demons. Yeah, the animation in that one scene was spectacular!! Ohhhhh where was the "not yet"?! That's so funny!!! He said the thing lol. Thanks again and can't wait to see next week's ep/for you guys to see my reaction to it!!

kamenriderhime

Thank you so much for all this info!!! I really appreciate it! So interesting, I had a hard time telling if Reiner was being genuine when telling about all those "horrible things", but now that you've explained so much of this, i.e. the scene in the meeting room where he cuts off Galliard and what he says about Gabi, I can see that he actually does have a bigger perspective on it but is trying to be the "loyal dog" and not get caught. That does make sense that Falco, based on his family history, would see past it as well! So glad I caught the name, yay! And thanks for clarifying that about Pieck, that makes sense that she'd be on the crutch/sprawled out like that, I had a slightly hard time keeping up with all the dialogue but I'm glad you pointed it out! I thought she was just chilling lol. So she's the Luggage Titan!! Nice! Thank you again for all the info!!!

kamenriderhime

Got it!!! I couldn't exactly tell! I knew the stories were not that bad (really, especially considering there was bad stuff in the walls he could have given as an example!!), so thanks for clearing that up! But true that whether it's subconscious or intentional, he doesn't really feel that way! Thanks :D

kamenriderhime

Thank you so much! I'll look forward to hearing more in the future!! Yay, thank you!!!!!!! I actually caught something haha!!!! XD

kamenriderhime

Yay, thank you!!! I'm so happy you enjoyed it! And I agree that the dinner scene was so awesome and well done - I had a hard time telling if Reiner was being intentional or not, but either way it says an awful lot about how the experience affected him. I couldn't agree more that Reiner is going through some form of PTSD, his total personality split was probably an early sign that something was super wrong emotionally speaking!!! And so true about indoctrination - we see it not only with the nation/gov't. towards the people, but also with Grisha's father towards him, and eventually with Grisha towards Zeke. The black/white way of thinking is very dangerous no matter what side you're on, which is something this show has been demonstrating to us for a while now, in very emotional and well done ways. Again, so happy you enjoyed it! Thanks again!

My comment just disappeared for some reason, I hate when patreon do that, I wrote a text and even put some links to manga panels from this episode to explain things better 😭😭😭

kamenriderhime

Oh no! I'm messaging you your comments now! So sorry about that - Patreon does it all the time and I'm not sure why! >.< If you wanna re-post them here after I message them to you, I'll write back so we can discuss what you were saying! ^_^

Let's see if patreon allows my comment to live now 💀

Oh no!!! I don't see it so I'm gonna paste it here so I can respond: "Not ganna lie here, I didn't like much how they adapted this episode, feel rushed and they cut a lot of moments important for the plot and characters(that talk with Gabi and Reiner in the end was also cut in the middle of it). The dinner scene was also much more confusing to get in the anime. Long story short, The dinner scene is to make Reiner's point of view clear, shows us that he not only don't think the way that they think(in the manga, while everyone is praising Gabi for her achievement in the battlefield, Reiner in the background looks kinda of angry for the way that Gabi almost got killed doing it). Also, while they are talking about the people in Paradis being devils and all that stuff, he giggles at what they say on accident in the manga, probably thinking about idiots like Sasha and Connie being called devils(and they removed that moment in the anime), he thought that situation funny for a moment, in a tragic way. He is alone there, only one knowing the truth and he's surrounded by people who know nothing and he have to pretend that he's one of them (even because besides the fact that all of them being, at a certain level, brainwashed, if he says what he knows it could be seen as betrayal/rebellion by Marley and would put his entire family at risk, the whole situation is very complicated and delicate). They are also not focusing too much on Reiner's expressions or making different expressions than the ones that he did in the manga. Which is also bad, because in this arc Reiner also communicates with the public through his facial expressions. In this dinner scene for example, when he finishes saying the things he was saying about the island of Paradis you clearly see a sad expression on his face (something that would also help to better understand the scene). Reiner looking angry while Gabi is talking about how she risk her life and almost got killed while everyone praise her(if this is to small for you to see you should be able to zoom it too): 1.bp.blogspot.com/-GqUKG-9cQiA/Xe6FU50ntvI/AAAAAAAAS04/_TmqmuY5iCIyKZG8MMHqu9Rv_3b1d9C8ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/015.jpg Reiner's expression after he talked about the "devils" of paradis: media.discordapp.net/attachments/365007091460734988/789020564857552936/unknown.png?width=540&height=473"

I gotta say I’m very disappointed in MAPPA studio not only is there adaption to the manga not as good but they also ruined this season with there horrible CGI I mean it’s just cringe now every time a main Titans on the screen it looks like a toy action figure at this point I hope they split this season into 2 parts and they fix there shit cause AOT shouldn’t go out on a bad note

Ahhh I'm sorry to hear the animation really isn't working for you!!! I think it looks good in some spots but can see where it's really different from the way that WIT looked. I hope it doesn't take you out of the story too much, especially since this is the last season and all!!
