Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to season 1 episode 7 of Haikyu!! Wow, Oikawa sure is a character....I find it interesting that he's your typical egotistical/charming/stuck up athlete type, yet also kinda not? Like he seems to genuinely care about being challenged too? Anyway, it was amazing to see Hinata's big win here!!!!!! And I'm so curious about who might be returning...!!! Great stuff! Enjoy! ~ MH

Breaking my usual silent watching to talk about one of my favorite characters, Oikawa! You do know that voice, he's done so much including Hisoka from HxH and Choso from JJK. I love Oikawa because you can feel how much he loves volleyball, even just from this episode alone. He's bratty, a little full of himself, loves to tease (both his friends and competitors), but he's also such a realistic portrayal of a serious student athlete. Also, it's subtle throughout the show, but he has his own setter/spiker situation with one of his teammates that is a cool mirror/parallel to Shoyo and Kageyama that adds an extra layer to how oikawa operates in his team. (It was the dude that threw a volleyball at oikawa when he said his toss wasn't as good as kageyama haha)

In addition to the voices Kirsten previously mentioned, the VA for Oikawa is also the performer for Haganezuka (Tanjiro’s swordsmith) from Demon Slayer, and Anasui from JoJo Part 6. Basically it looks like the entire voice cast is pretty loaded so I’ll keep digging for you whenever there are new characters popping up. I noticed a couple things about Oikawa - first, he wasn’t playing from the start because of a bum ankle, but yet he felt like he didn’t need to even to show up until two sets had already passed. Then he spent most of the third and deciding set warming up and scouting - things he probably should’ve been doing much earlier, and he didn’t even substitute into the game until Karasuno was at match point. Also he immediately addressed Kageyama by his given name, and was the reason that they wanted him to play setter the entire match. I’m not sure how I feel but that’s extremely arrogant and high handed, at least? It does appear that the team is starting to at least make attempts to get along, but as the match points out, receiving is a problem. By the way you asked if hitting the shoulder of a player was okay when Oikawa was serving. That’s a very common look - the idea is to place the ball in a spot where the player trying to receive it is not going to be able to handle it and get it up in the air. “Pinch server” is basically when Oikawa substituted for another player, it was that turn in the rotation to serve. It’s like a pinch hitter in baseball, bringing in someone who’s better at hitting. Kageyama and Kindaichi are still at odds even after the match - it’s a stubborn guy thing, they both have their pride. But what throws him off is when Kageyama talked using “we” instead of “me,” something he clearly had no expectation for. Takeda’s post game speech was so epic he started a clip show. But they still need an actual coach. And it sounds like that’s a big reason Kageyama came to Karasuno in the first place… Someone who gets more fired up than Tanaka? That’s a bit hard to imagine… 👀

His first match! Hinata did that! They all did amazing. It’s a practice match but like Takeda sensei said this will definitely mean big things for them in the future! Oikawa is definitely what you’d expect but kind of not. Frankly he kind of reminds me of Kageyama after the first episode. He’s bratty and stuck up yet very much dorky when you get to know him. Im jumping in to the next one. I’m really excited for you to meet our libero! 😁

I'm so proud of him!!!!!! They really did!!! Their future is bright for sure! Yeah I can totally see the similarities to Kageyama's attitude! I'm getting that vibe, that he's arrogant but also kinda loveable in a way! Ooohhh hope you're loving my reactions!!! Can't wait for more!!

OMG I knew it, I was getting total Hisoka vibes (I mean, not really, but in the voice lol) :P That's the thing, like he's kinda arrogant but there's a sincerity in how much he loves the sport. Ooooh that's interesting about his setter/spiker situation, I'm glad you pointed that out! I'll have to go back and see that scene again so I know for next time, thanks!!!

I knew it was Anasui!!!!!! And also Hisoka from HxH :P That's interesting about how he handled this game, I hadn't really thought about it that way. Oh interesting about how common the shoulder thing is! Oh gotcha, makes sense with the whole "pinch" thing, like being in a pinch! Yeah the use of "we" was so subtle but great. Hahahaha you know a speech is epic when a clip show starts rolling :P OMG I know, it's hard to imagine anyone out-firing Tanaka :P
