Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to season 1 episode 1 of Haikyu!!! We got established with our main guy here, who seems like a hard worker, a good leader, and an all around sweetie pie! Of course it wouldn't be a sports anime without a blossoming rivalry!! And surprise surprise, these rivals end up on the same team!! How will they learn to cooperate?! Guess we'll find out! Overall I'm loving the cute vibes and I have a feeling this will be about life just as much as it's about volleyball! Great stuff! Enjoy! ~ MH

The most difficult episode to react to is the first one in a series as you’re trying to keep a dialogue going while also learning the ropes and the characters. Ironically, I actually know a few things about volleyball as I was a scorekeeper and team manager throughout high school - which was a while ago, don’t ask how long. 👀 —————- Here’s a crash course in the sport: The sport is played by both men and women, although in USA, it’s far more common for women to play organized. Most teams are separated by gender, however, mixed games are not an uncommon occurrence, especially recreationally. There are six players on each side of the court. Volleyball is played in “sets.” It appears here, they use rally scoring. The goal is to score 25 points before the other team does. However, you must also win by two points at least. (If the score is tied at 24, one team must get to 26 without the other getting to 25.) It looks like matches are going to be best of three sets here. (A set is one time getting to 25 points and winning). Play starts when one team serves the ball over the net. If the ball doesn’t get over the net, a point is awarded to the other team. If the ball does not stay inside the net’s lines, or goes too far, it is “out” and also gives a point to the other team. The team not serving is receiving the ball. Once it goes over the net, players can touch it three times and no more. The same player cannot touch the ball twice in a row. If either of these rules are violated, the other team gets a point. (One exception: if the ball is blocked and ends up on the side it was blocked from, that’s not counted as a touch.) Players cannot go over the center line under the net. Normally on the third touch, the team that was possessing the ball will attempt to get it to hit the floor between the outside and back lines on the other side, which gives them a point, unless the other team stops it and begins their own three touch sequence. Also If the ball hits the floor but outside the side and back lines, it is out, and the team that was defending gets the point. Unless one of their players touches it first. I don’t want to overwhelm you too much so I’ll leave it at that for now. If you have a hard time getting that down, just try to get these concepts: 25 points, win by 2, best of 3 - three touches, same person can’t hit twice - the last person who hits the ball is responsible for the result of the play if it’s in or out. —————- Now I’ll talk a bit about the episode, but first: Shoyo (the VA is Aki from Chainsaw Man, Joe from Parasyte, and Kotetsu, the Swordsmith kid from Demon Slayer). He seems to be a very motivated boy and it seems like this tournament he entered was just because he got five other people to agree to play one match. He seems motivated though. Kageyama (the King): The VA is Iida from MHA and Naofumi from Rising of the Shield Hero. He seems to be a rather tsundere character doesn’t he? I’ll have more thoughts after next reaction, but figured I’d try to give you some of the basics here. :)

The first episode is the set up of course. The prerequisite of the series. As you saw, it starts to get fun in episode two. The characters are great. So Shoyo is a bit on the short side as you can see. He loves volleyball. And the “little giant” is a player he saw playing nationals that he resonated with since he isn’t the ideal height for volleyball. The article was about Shoyo’s team losing to Kageyama. Shoyo team consisted of friends willing to help him out since they know he has been trying for this. Very commendable. I’d definitely recommend paying close attention to the dialogue during games because you learn a lot. A lot of us were not sports enthusiast. And even if you are but never played volleyball, you will definitely understand more about the game. Trust me I’m not into sports. In fact during volleyball month in high school I used to get hit in the head with a lot. Actually that applies to not only volleyball. They called me a ball magnet 🙄 I’ve never heard anyone else make the comparison between Naruto and Sasuke and these guys. And that is SO SPOT ON! Now I can’t I see it👌 Anyway I’m so happy your enjoying it. It only gets better from here. 🏐

Yeah it was a good establishing ep! Shoyo is so cute! I love that he found a role model in the Little Giant! I'm sure there's more to come about that. Thanks for clarifying about the article! They still really put forth a great effort. Oooh that's good to know about the dialogue, I'm excited to learn more about volleyball! Oof, I'm sorry about your bad vollyeball experiences :((( NOOOO not a nickname and everything! I'm so sorry Manny! Aww yay, I'm glad you like my comparison hehe! I'm really excited for more!!

kamenriderhime

Exactly, we're just jumping in and learning everything! Oh wow, thank you for the very thorough explanation about the rules of the game! OOOH thanks for the VA info too, nice! He's a bit of a tsundere for sure hehe.

Melissa: "There sure are a lot of balls to faces" Fujoshis (probably): YAAAS.

Our main boy and the King actually make sense as teammates...MC is a spiker, the King is a setter. They need each other.

LOL!! I really didn't mean it to sound that way but there's like, no way for it not to sound that way :P
