Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to episode 19 of The Apothecary Diaries! OH DANG you guys!!! It really was all connected!!!! I knew there was something off about the way we "resolved" all these other mysteries....but I never would've guessed they were all so incredibly connected when you look at the bigger picture!!! Maomao's got some big brain energy to figure it out! And we tracked it all down to this ceremony.....where the craziest of things happens!!!! I can't believe how much damage Maomao took, that Lakan helped her, and that Jinshi got saved by her!!!!!!!!!!! There's no way they killed her off here but WOW was that carrying scene emotional! Great ep! Enjoy! ~ MH

Hi Melissa, I was so looking forward to this reaction today as I knew these videos were just going to be good. And your reaction to the many things revealed in the two episodes did not disappoint me. You actually connected almost all the story points well. I'm very proud of you! I was also always a bit unsatisfied with the little mysteries we had in the last few episodes. They were all intriguing, but they didn't really make sense to me as a whole. And in this episode, everything suddenly fell into place. It shocked me so much. And I was just like Maomao and wanted Jinshi to be saved really quickly. Even though Maomao didn't know yet that it would be Jinshi she was saving. I kind of knew from the beginning that it had something to do with him, because we saw him briefly in the ceremonial clothes in the opening. And when he mentioned that he was taking part in a ceremony, I thought to myself, “oh God, this isn't going to end well”. I felt the tension in my body when Maomao was determined to get past the guard. I think we saw very nicely in this scene that she's just a little girl who has to fight for her position in the palace. And in any other normal anime, she would have become a Super Saiyan, knocked out the guard and saved Jinshi, like a Superwoman. Here you can see the difference between Shonen and Seinen very well. Everything here is kept very human and realistic. Maomao is simply knocked out by the security guard as if she were a fly. And she's really badly damaged. A blow to the head like that can quickly cause whiplash. You could also briefly see that her vision was already blurred, but as she's very tough, she was able to stay awake for a bit. I was also very surprised that Lakan ended up coming to her rescue. I don't necessarily think he's involved in all this randomness. He knows that Jinshi isn't who he claims to be but he's never threatened him in any way. Of course, that could change if it were discovered that Jinshi is very much in love with Maomao. Then his paternal instincts will probably come through. The author of the light novel also wrote on Twitter, which I found out later, that Lakan is said to have beaten and tortured the soldier who injured Maomao, but didn't kill him. But he did use his power over him because he was so angry. Unfortunately, it's not in the anime or manga, but I would have liked to have seen it because I was really angry with the guard. I was so relieved to see that Maomao was able to save Jinshi. But seeing his face, how desperate and scared he was about her critical condition, was really heartbreaking. The scene where he carries her out was beautifully directed by the animators. The music was also fantastic. At the beginning I was really confused as to why he was walking so slowly, because Maomao was bleeding a lot and was supposed to be treated quickly. But then I realized later through comments that he didn't do it specifically because she probably had a whiplash injury and if he shook her too much when he was running, it might make the situation worse and that's why he ran slowly. Besides, it wouldn't do his status any good if everyone saw that he cared so much for a normal servant.

As I said teasing this week, everything is connected - Maomao puts it this way, not all of these were expected to work, but if enough of them coincide… Jinshi pretty much has figured out Maomao by now - when you like something you spend a lot of time thinking about it, right? So that’s why he dangles the ox bezoar in front of her. As for how everything is connected, somehow this was all set up in advance and a lot of the cases are interconnected as previously discussed. The how was discovered - but never the why, until now. The warehouse fire, the manager with the sweet tooth, the seaweed, and the metalworks were all pawns in the same scheme. What wasn’t counted on was 1, Maomao figuring it out and 2, Lakan’s interference. Maomao is pretty much seething already when he shows up but she did mention she didn’t want to know who was behind her - which makes me wonder if she recognizes the voice or just puts two and two together. What ticked the guard off was her implication that he was in on it, and she proves that her station isn’t that well thought of. Of course, she does save “a person of the most noble birth” which just happens to be Jinshi - so now the question becomes - who set this up, and why? Also, you immediately went to “she’s dead”? Anime must have been traumatizing you recently. :P As far as the procession, they’re all paying respect to Jinshi as his status is known at this ceremony. As for the repercussions, please see the next episode. :)

Yeah, it really was all connected! Hahaha Jinshi knows her love language now! I love how it all came together! Yeah I kinda thought Maomao was trying to provoke the guard, but to what end I'm not sure. Lakan was def a wild card here. I have so many questions! Hahahah recently?! When has anime not traumatized me?! :P

Hey Leonie!!! YAY!!!! Thank youuuu!!! I'm so happy, I actually understood lol!! I hear you, none of the mysteries felt really resolved. It makes total sense that it was Jinshi being targeted but I think you're right that Maomao didn't even know that. OHHHH that was in the opening too, wow! I hear you, like I expected for her to superpower up or something, even on adrenaline, but it's kind of a nice touch that she's really a petite girl with no fighting skills underneath all her other skills, and that's ok - we don't need to superpower her. Poor Maomao though, she took so much damage!!! That could be so dangerous!! I don't think Lakan was involved either, but it was bittersweet to have him come in for a save. OMG I wonder what he'd think of Jinshi's feelings for Maomao?! WHOA, that's crazy about Lakan's response to the soldier!!! The scene of Jinshi carrying her was so dramatic!!! Ooohh good call about why he wasn't walking quickly, honestly between that and the music I kinda thought they were implying that he thought she was dead :P But it was a great scene!!!
