Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to ep 6 of season 2 of Oshi no Ko! Oh wow you guys, I never thought they could make me care about Melt this much!!! But WOW!!! I was so proud of him in this! Not only did we get some backstory that made his situation make sense even more, but we get to see him really making the most of his opportunity and taking Aqua's advice in order to really shine for at least one big scene!!! That was a great idea by the way! Never thought I'd be rooting for him and even crying over him so much, but that's just the magic of this show I guess. Next time, maybe we finally get to see how Aqua plans to handle this emotional acting thing!!! Can't wait! Great ep! Enjoy! ~ MH

Hi Hime :) The thing about Melt losing her virginity so early to an older woman, for stumbling upon a spoiler, this won't be the last time we get a story like this. After all, the story starts with a 16 year old girl getting pregnant... But it also shows Melt's evolution, since THIS moment, he lived his quiet life thinking that everything would be offered to him on a silver platter because he is handsome. Then he meets Aqua and Kana who put him back in his place, he works hard to catch up on all this wasted time to arrive at THIS moment where he is reborn. What a beautiful message, that without real work behind it, you will never go very far and that it is never too late to try to catch up. In any case, I hope we'll have a moment between Melt and Yoriko-sensei, especially now that he made her cry, she has no reason to hate him anymore (but will be able to continue to tease him a little anyway lol). Without realizing it, we hear dubbing actors playing actors, who play characters... It's enough to get lost lol

Hi Spadeas! :) Interesting, although sadly, it seems like the entertainment industry could be a place where that kind of thing happens a lot....! I was so happy to see Melt's evolution! He really has come so far! It's a really great message for sure. I couldn't believe he make Yoriko cry, and I hope we get a scene with them too! Haha omg I hear you, I was getting so lost in the story lol!!! XD

Just to prove how hotly contested a debate the Akane/Kana war is, the anime site that tracks this stuff conducted a Twitter poll asking their followers who they liked better: 2,976 votes with Akane getting 50.3% to Kana’s 49.7%. That’s a difference of about 17 votes. They’re still hotly contested both on screen and off it appears. 😳 The English translation to both the opening and ending themes are on this week’s release, I’d encourage you to examine them a little closer if you have the time - they’re definitely playing off of what Idol did last year and trying to be relevant to the current season. (Next week it’ll be JP lyrics so it’ll be two weeks before you have another shot at it on screen in case you’re wondering.) It seems like the studio wanted to give a lot of time in this episode to the actual play production, the look, sound, and feel of it. Like I said before, it would be really interesting to actually see one of these things operate in person - I have to assume these are based on actual productions. This one feels very shonen in nature. They showed six characters, and they’re basically all tied to a character we have at least some concept of. Blade is Hisegawa, Tsurugi is Kana, Kizami is Melt, Monme is Sakuya, Touki is Aqua and Princess Saya is Akane. Seems like most of Kana’s acting is taking place alongside the title character, Blade, and I can’t help but notice the way Kana’s dialogue is being delivered - she really seems like she’s going for a um… Pirates of the Caribbean style character? It seems the way the story’s laid out, the first three characters listed are on one faction (Shinjuku) and the final three are opposed (Shibuya). Which makes for some interesting parallel dynamics when you think about who is playing who. Speaking of, Melt and Sakuya both have an on screen clash at the start of Act 2. Apparently Sakuya is a really good and experienced actor in 2.5D, and Raida is glad Kusuragi was able to send him - even the theater actors are learning a lot from him. The problems were shown last episode, already, as he was hitting on anything that moved and pretty much giving Melt a horrible time for getting in his way. Seems like the character he’s playing is how Melt kind of feels in real life. It seems Raida is hoping the play will be groundbreaking enough to keep the expectations of the usual audience while shattering them at the same time and attracting new fans - which is what you see a lot of productions try to do when they realize their medium is getting a bit too predictable. Raida is confused why Kusuragi pushed for Melt - after all, we all know that Sweet Today performance is following him everywhere - and he admits he was trying to do the kid a favor but also he does realize the kid is working his tail off to get better. You were asking about it, it seems from the way the dialogue was presenting it, shortly after starting middle school, Melt was simply seduced by an older girl - it doesn’t seem like it was non consensual, but he seemed very confused about how it happened at first, and that was his clue that he could pretty much do whatever he felt like - he was good looking and popular, and pretty much rode on that for a while. Yojiro is also befuddled as to why Melt would be cast in a role like this - one, because he made a mockery of the adaptation of her manga and two, she’s looking out for her junior who has put a ton of effort into her work as well. Of course, that just gives him the chance to convince her - it’s one thing to make an error in approach once, but if you don’t get off the mat, you’re not going to improve. Even Melt knows how bad his acting was and doesn’t need everyone else to remind him - he’s literally beating himself up inside over it. He’s been trying to improve stamina and other approaches, but it seems Aqua has the best advice: focus on the big hits and the most important scene and don’t worry about the rest of the little things as much. Also if nobody expects anything, it’ll be that much better when you prove them all wrong. Even Abiko is like really happy, saying she didn’t think what she drew could be done when she sees it. That’s a pretty good sign you’re on the right track. The way he got here was sheer frustration - something Kana prods Aqua about as they’re watching. I don’t know if you picked up on this, but when they flashback to his rehearsal where he’s told to watch the others, someone (presumably the understudy) is doing his lines as he just sits there watching. It’s really hard to compare yourself to all the veterans because it’s overwhelming, but meanwhile he sees Akane trying to analyze all angles for her character and that just gets him more depressed. Then he applies those feelings to the manga and suddenly figures out what he needs to draw into - this isn’t that different from what Aqua has been tasked with - he’s just dealing with his own source of trauma. Even Sakuya notices what Melt’s doing on stage and apparently it seems to have worked as it even got to Yojiro. The animation effects they used here are pretty interesting - they look almost like watercolor. My guess is the sequence is meant to show Melt trying to grasp “it.” While that can be easy for a veteran actor, he’s just trying to get his feet on the same playing field. I think we all probably have felt like “I don’t belong here” at some point, and needed to up our game. But it seems to have had the effect he was going for. Even Sakuya was impressed - in fact Melt acted so hard that he has blisters on his hands, but I think he finally got the chance to shine he was seeking for. Or rather… I guess that’s why they titled this episode “Growth.” I couldn’t help but notice we had maybe twenty seconds of Aqua and ten seconds of Akane. Feels like they are going to string us along on this for a bit. I think the moral of this particular sequence is that just because you aren’t the main protagonist of a story doesn’t mean you don’t have a journey worth exploring. Everyone has a personal goal they’re striving for. You can do it, if you try hard enough.

Hey Melissa, I completely adored this episode. Absolutely gorgeous episode with great production all around. The people who questioned Oshi no Ko production values this season have to feel real dumb now lol. They went above and beyond with this stage play truly bringing it to life and giving so much love to Melt’s character. I love how the episode opens up with the audience perspective of the play before slowly transitioning onto the stage for Kana’s character’s introduction scene. The animation during that was so good and to her credit shows how brilliant Kana’s acting is. She really got lost in that role. But the big focus of this episode was on Melt, a side character who easily became a fan favourite after this episode. In just under 20 minutes we got such a good character arc for him. His hopes, fears, insecurities and past all perfectly interwoven into the play and connecting back to his character. While some were in-universe people had issues with his casting and accuse him of just getting parts because of his looks, he showed that he was the PERFECT boy for the role. Speaking of storytelling, I feel like some people complaining about the screen time Melt had are misunderstanding a key part of the series. Sure, the main characters are obviously a highlight of the anime, and the plot to find Aqua’s father is important, but the real depth and beauty of this anime shines through the hardships and appreciations of the entertainment industry. Melt’s character arc is a catalyst for showcasing the wild roller coaster that is entertainment. Watching his struggles for two seasons and how it affects everything around him was very realistic. In reality, one person can ruin an entire body of work. This show reminds us of that constantly. But in the face of this reality, choosing to stand your ground and make yourself shine when it matters the most is what Melt learns and strives towards. And that is a wonderful takeaway from any form of media, let alone an anime. The rest of the characters will get their chance to shine as well, I’m sure. But for now, I have nothing but respect for the entire Oshi no Ko staff for putting their blood sweat and tears into the making of this beautifully created and carefully developed episode and series. And LETS GOOOOO MELT

That was phenomenal. I for one teared up so Melts definitely doing something right. Seeing his journey he definitely had an IT factor drew other’s attention. It’s a natural talent all its own. And it’s good to have talent but it still has to be trained. I’m definitely taking the “lousy” lesson with me after this. I’ve been trying to avoid it and impress when I should be embracing it. A great lesson along a great performance. I’m really happy to witness his starting point of realization. It’s even better it happened because he could relate to his character so much. Mr Cool has left the building. Let Mr. imperfect show. Encore! 👏 💐👏 💐👏 💐👏

kamenriderhime

Omg yes! I'm glad I'm not the only one who teared up! I definitely think there's something for all of us to learn from the "lousy" lesson!!! It was really great to see this transformation right?! He's so much more likeable and relatable this way too, as opposed to Mr. Perfect. Encore for sure haha!!!

kamenriderhime

Hey Leonie! I agree!!! They really outdid themselves, particularly with this ep! It's so cool to do it from the perspective of the audience at first. Kana is totally killing it in her role for sure, and the stage play is totally above and beyond!!! I couldn't have said it better myself about Melt - in one episode that managed to highlight his issues, background, redemption, talent, skill, etc. so perfectly. He really did show everyone who doubted him that he belongs here! I didn't even realize there were complaints about Melt and how much screen time he's getting! I agree, at the heart of it this will always be a murder mystery, but even this season they've touched on how Aqua has really built a life around himself and each one of these characters has something to teach us about the entertainment industry. It's very realistic to watch his transformation from not caring and dragging down a production, to doubling down and doing his best to prove that he has what it takes. It's a great lesson for sure! So well said, the entire crew deserves a big raise for this one!!! YAY MELT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kamenriderhime

Oh dang, that's pretty close!!! I didn't see the english translation on today's, I thought it was the Japanese one?! I'll be sure to look for it next week! I love that they put so much detail into showing what one of these stage productions is actually like! I can tell you that I've watched recordings of similar stage adaptations and they really are quite the hype! Def very shonen-y!!! Hisegawa and Sakuya are the only ones of that crew that I feel like I don't know too well yet. Haha I can totally see the Pirates vibes with Kana's character! The fact that Melt and Sakuya have real life beef definitely helped make this scene more interesting. It's interesting that they want to pull in more of an audience - it seems like Tokyo Blade already has a huge fanbase, but it's always good to get more of a mainstream audience involved, especially from a producer point of view. I think Kusaragi sees something in Melt!! He has an eye for talent. Oh okay gotcha! The line "had her way with me" left me wondering, it might just be a translation thing, but that can kinda be taken many ways. I see how it fits with the idea that he was getting by on his looks though. Aqua was so smart in his advice! It's way better to make the most of one part, to leave the audience with something really big that they'll hold onto. I didn't pick up on the understudy thing but that just adds to it all even more. And that's true, so many of them have a cross to bear here, including Aqua. Was it watercolor?! It looked amazing! Yeah so many of us have had that "I don't belong here" feeling at one point or another. I think you're right that they're gonna string us along with the Aqua story! At least we got some Akane in today's ep!!

This episode reminded me of interviews and conversations with ADR Directors and Voice Actors and how they draw on real life experiences to push into their performances. Directors will sometimes taunt actors in a uniquely personal way to trigger the performance they're seeking. Voice actor Brina Palencia once explained that for one emotional scene where her character had to cry/sob deeply, she remembered her late grandmother back in Honduras and all the emotion Brina felt when she passed away and put THAT into her performance in character. While the character is "fake" the emotions in the booth were real.

kamenriderhime

Oh wow!!! That's such an interesting technique!! I can see why it would lead to more realistic performances.
