Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to episode 6 of The Apothecary Diaries! Oh dang, here it is, the garden party!!! WOW do we have some stuff going on! We get to meet the other ladies here, and there's definitely some tensions going on. Not to mention some....reveals that were a bit hard for me to handle!!! What's the deal with Lishu being targeted?! Fortunately our resident poison lover is on it haha! Can't wait to see more! Great ep! Enjoy! ~ MH

Hi Hime :) We're all here for some more shirtless Shinji lol Besides, Basen, the one with whom he trained, will return later in the series and you will have a surprise as to his identity. Jinshi who offers his hairpin to tell everyone not to touch Maomao, we can already say that he no longer considers her as a “toy”. Lady Lihua gives it for the same reason, as for Lihaku (who we will also see again later), it is more for his own career, being well seen by the lady in waiting of the four highest concubines is rather good. About Lihaku, we also see him shirtless later, I thinks it would be best if you had fan at this time lol. Lady Lishu was the previous emperor's former concubine when she was 9 years old, but it is explained later that the current emperor showed no interest in Lady Lishu, so he took her as a concubine more to protect her, and for another reason that you will learn later. But I hope that can reassure you a little about her being a concubine currently. Lady Lishu's taster willingly swapped her tray, Lady Lishu's lady-in-waiting take her for a brat and someone who is picky with her food, they didn't know about the poison, they just wanted to make fun of her and torment her. But Maomao made it clear to the taster that this "joke" could have ended very badly and that next time, if anything happens to Lady Lishu, it will be her head that will fall. And yes, power struggles don't just happen between concubines...

I don't think I promised too much when I talked about a toxic garden party last week. Because unfortunately this has become the truth in MaomaoLeben. But let's start from the beginning. Maomao's hairpin situation is already very tense, because not only did she get one from her own mistress, but also from another concubine and from other eunuchs. But if you go into detail and look at the difference between Jinshi's hairpin and Lihaku's, you can already see a huge difference. Jinshi's is made of silver and is of a much higher quality. This indicates a higher status for our favorite boy. But don't be too judgmental of Lihaku. He really is a pretty cute boy who you'll get to know better in the future. I could already imagine that the whole thing with Lishu would really piss you off, because I already knew that from Jojo. That's why I was prepared for it. Unfortunately, it was the case back then that young girls were married off very early, even if they couldn't have children yet. And that was the situation with Lishu. I don't want to give too much away, but you will learn a bit more about the previous emperor. What you have to say is that the current emperor doesn't really have a thing for Lishu because he doesn't like girls that young and therefore neglects her a bit. Which is good for her on the one hand, but not exactly good for her image. And since she wants to provoke something with her somewhat arogant nature and her striking clothing, it is not far-fetched that she has had poison mixed in at some point. Maomao thinks the whole thing is great, of course. I find it really interesting to see how happy she is to eat poison. And how little it does to her body. I find it all the cuter that Jinshi is so worried about her. The mystery surrounding the wooden sticks remains, but it will be interesting to see who is really behind it.

I keep meaning to say this but you can’t do your usual “when we start off with the theme…” spiel on this particular series, because they do it every time. 😅 The garden party seems tailor made to put all the concubines at odds, and while they themselves don’t come to blows, their servants certainly are in too close quarters. It is rather funny watching Maomao freak out the entire group of Lihua with just a look - she looks SO different that nobody picks up its her until one of her fellow ladies-in-waiting calls her by name. Gyokuyou’s group never looked back so they have no idea what’s going on there. Okay - yes, I did warn you there’s gonna be done vast cultural and ahem… other differences in this time period. But the fact that Maomao is even being taken aback by the situation should give you an idea that this is an uncomfortable situation even for the people of THIS time period. If you are confused about how it exactly works, it would probably not hurt to replay that scene and get all your facts in line. The basic premise I came away with, was the previous emperor must’ve been quite the scumbag. But, the emperor can’t be refused or denied, so it’s not like there was any choice in the matter. We haven’t talked too much about the current one at this point, that’s a conversation for after some more information gets presented. Maomao certainly is busy collecting hairpins, even though she’s not really trying - but that also kind of proves her point - if she went around like she normally looks, she would attract unwanted attention. She’s not dwelling on her past, though, and wouldn’t want you to either. She’s more busy trying to figure out how Lishu got attacked by having the dishes switched. Now it could’ve been an honest mistake, and it could’ve been intentional. When Jinshi tries to get her to accuse the servers of making a mistake, she doesn’t place a blame because whoever she makes out as the faulty party is probably losing their life. She doesn’t want that sort of thing on her conscience, especially with incomplete information. She’s too busy trying to get the rest of the soup - which WAS poisoned and apparently someone had to go and follow up. This is one of those things where when Maomao tells you what sonething is, you probably should listen… She really does have a modern day mind while being trapped in an archaic time period… but that’s why she’s so interesting. :)

I know tradition is essential and that it's important for their culture. But as beautiful as things are visually, this series has me thinking not about how impressive the customs and stuff are but how outdated they are. I knew about the circumstances of the young, but never THAT young. My god, she was practically a fetus. 🫢🫨😨

kamenriderhime

That's the thing, like there's a lot to learn, observe, and even appreciate...but yeah, it really highlights how different things were! Seriously, we're talking fetus here :/

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) Hahaha oh yeah! Oh that's interesting, I'll look out for him! Ohhhh ok, that's what the hairpin means! And interesting about the meaning behind why Lihua did it. LOL sounds like I'm gonna need to really stay cool with all these shirtless guys around!! Ohhhh ok, well at least there's more to it than what I was thinking then! Ok thanks for clarifying about the taster! It seems like there are probably a lot of power struggles going on here...!

kamenriderhime

That's so true about the hairpin quality!!! I'll look forward to getting to know Lihaku better then! Lol I'm glad you were prepared for me to get upset :P But yeah, it makes sense that things like that were common unfortunately. I'm hearing that there's more to the story about the previous emperor, which gives me some hope! That's the thing, like I'm glad he's not necessarily into young girls, but I know that's bad for her "status" as a concubine. I guess it makes sense she'd be a bit of a target then! LOL Maomao is having way too much fun with this! And Jinshi being worried is so sweet! I can't wait to see more about the wooden sticks!!

kamenriderhime

Haha yeah, apparently every ep is like that since the theme is always first ;) Omg for real, this whole thing is a hotbed for drama. LOL Maomao being intimidating is amazing! I replayed that scene so much, I'm surprised that no one finds it annoying for me to watch it again LOL! But yeah, it couldn't hurt to go back and review. And I agree, even the characters of this time period were surprised, so that's saying something. That's pretty much the impression I got too, but I'm told there's more to it. Lol she really is amassing quite the collection! Yeah, that's the thing, the way she actually looks would draw lots of attention for not the right reasons for her. Maomao's smart not to make accusations right away, since she knows the consequences. LOL she wants that poison soooo bad! But yeah, they should totally listen to her. She's so far ahead of her time! It's totally what makes it so interesting!!!

Technology the ex- emporess. She is the Emperors mother. The previous eperor was essentially a lollicon. Lishu who was 9 was Ah-Duo's mother in law. Ah-Duo was the current emporer's concubine while he was still a prince. His father was definitely a pedophile. . Don't worry too much because Lishu is still a virgin. Maomao spent 2 months with those other ladies in-waiting The fish was not poison. It's like you said. Lishu is allergic to it. Her taster and her other ladies in waiting bully her, so the taster switched Lishus food wit Gyoykuos food becase she thinks lishu is just a pucky eater. Some otger person tried to poison lishu. It really made no sense since all the food gets tasted forbpoison. Lishu would have been fine if her taster did not switch the food, however by switching the food she saved her own life. Umlike Maomao who has a tolerance, Lishu's taster does not.
