Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to episode 5 of The Apothecary Diaries! Oh wow, what's going on with this rash situation?! And what does it mean for this big upcoming garden party?! Also, WHAT THE HECK, our girl has so much trauma in her past!!!! I gotta say....I never would've guessed that she was purposely doing things to her appearance for that reason, but it makes total sense. I just wanna hug her!!! Can't wait to see more! Great ep! Enjoy! ~ MH

Huh, you just came off a reaction that broke you before filming this? I can’t imagine what that could have possibly been… 👀 ANYWAY… Maomao is most in her element when she’s just off by herself gathering stuff, that’s how she ended up with the mushrooms. Not a mushroom person myself, but you can tell she’s really into finding stuff like that. And she’s even gotten the doctor to be an accomplice. The interesting about the curse (hey wait when did we turn into JJK territory?) is that it’s a specially treated wood - it seems that Jinshi has also put together that someone is sending out a code, which is why he’s got Gaoshun looking everywhere for people with the same kind of mark. This might be a good time while you’re stomping to remind you that nearly all of the males in the rear palace are eunuchs, for obvious reasons. As far as Maomao’s daily life, you see her coming up with “technology” nobody else thinks about, and her brain never stops working. In fact her ideas are so groundbreaking that they caught the attention of the emperor’s own staff. And this all started just cause she wanted to keep warm and keep from needing to run to a facility. Even after she tolerates and fulfills everyone’s request (they all realized they wanted what she was making), she’s like, “oh, I could also do this!” Being a creative genius must mean it’s also hard to ever stop. As far as her getting into the makeup phase, and then her conversation with Jinshi regarding her past, she was kidnapped because her makeup was faded. She looked more normal. Growing up in a brothel / red light district isn’t an ideal situation, but even less so for a young female not prone to the trade. Sadly there are some guys out there that just… give the rest of us a bad name. Maomao clearly doesn’t want to dwell on it as she just says “attempts were made,” but her dialogue also implies nothing actually happened to her - she was smarter. Apparently, Jinshi giving her a hairpin signifies something, and the other girls are jealous. But Maomao isn’t even sure what that’s all about. She just hit it after he heard her story. She’s angry about the way things are… but at the same time she’s a teen girl in medieval China. She can’t really do a whole lot to CHANGE the way things are - she would rather spend her time proving what and who she IS, rather than wallowing in self pity about her bad luck. Character wise: There are four first class high ranking concubines, the two you know, and then there’s Lishu, the young one, and Ah-Duo, the tall elegant one. These four are the most likely candidates to be the empress consort, since he doesn’t have one. And yes, some of these plot arcs will be two shots. Apothecary Diaries is much more grounded in reality, but it does take a similar story structure to Frieren, as I’ve previously mentioned, we’re going places, but we’re not in a huge hurry to get to them while Maomao keeps playing detective.

Things like freckles were perceived as “imperfections” that kind of lowered one's “value.” Obviously, you can still be cute and attractive, but I believe things like that were a societal thing. I assumed that selling and kidnappings were known and common thing because of how Maomao was talking about it in the first episode. And I’m sure it was but seeing Jinshi being very appalled at the thought brought to light how different this world is from Maomao’s previous one.

Right, I totally get that! It was sort of a standard/norm of the time. That's true, it seemed like they were pretty commonplace, yet this seems like the first time Jinshi's heard about it!

Hahaha take a guess :p I know, you gotta love watching someone do something they love! Hahaha yeah we're getting into JJK territory now! Oooh interesting about the code. Yeah, I can kinda see why they're all eunuchs now :/ Maomao is so far ahead of her time, it's no wonder her work caught the eye of the emperor and his staff! Lol it's hard to be that kind of genius I guess! Oof, so sad about the faded makeup and her kidnapping, sheesh. There definitely are some bad ones out there. And being around the brothel district must have brought out a lot more of them. Right, it doesn't seem that whatever happened was the -complete- thing, but it's still an awful thing to have to go through. Ok I knew the hairpin meant something! Thanks for clarifying the concubine situation right now. That's interesting about the structure, thanks for the heads up!
