Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to episode 2 of The Apothecary Diaries! Here we get to see more of Maomao's new life in practice, and wow is it wild! I love how giddy she gets over experimenting lol, to the point of being sort of a mad scientist haha! Also, Jinshi (who is FINE btw) can't seem to stand that his charms don't work on her. And the whole aphrodisiac situation was erm....spicy!!! :P Shout out to me for knowing that rhododendrons are poison haha, I can totally see how Maomao is gonna be doing some detective work with her knowledge in the future. Can't wait to see more! Great ep! Enjoy! ~ MH

Hi Hime :) The saying goes that curiosity kills the cat and Maomao is often depicted with cat ears, I just hope nothing happens to her. Maomao loves her drugs and poisons, you will see her excited face more than once. It was more for the possibility of tasting poison than the food that filled him with joy during the test. Her love of poisons and the reaction of those around her to it will make for more of a fun scene to watch. When they say the money is sent to his "family", it's the kidnappers, so when the vase is broken and his "family" will have to pay for it, it's the kidnappers who will have to pay. Basically, the four other ladies in waiting will take good care of Maomao, she is in good hands. As for Maomao herself and her family, I'll tell you right away, you're not ready for her past and what's going to happen to her. But I can at least clarify this, Maomao grew up experimenting with poisons and helping her father who is an apothecary, that's where her knowledge comes from, but she has this curiosity that even her father has trouble containing. She also grew up surrounded by girls from the brothel, which means that she also has a good knowledge of things about love and the bedroom, we will talk about it more than once so don't be surprised. The Maomao/Jinshi relationship will be particularly interesting to follow, you'll see, between this handsome man who tries to seduce and manipulate her, and her who resists his charms and helps him in his "investigations", you can already see in these two episodes a game of cat and mouse between them, but this time it's not Maomao the cat lol. Honestly, I'm going to say it right away and even if I'm biased because I love Aoi Yuki, they chose the best actress for this role. Maomao is stoic most of the time, but also cute and crazy when it comes to poison, which Aoi Yuuki has already played more than once. In addition, later they will also make certain comments on its size and its lack of... shape we will say. Kind of comments that Aoi Yuuki is also used to seeing that it peaks at... 4.9ft ^^'. Now you still have to see other ranges of her emotions and believe me, some of them will give you chills.

This episode really convinced me to binge-watch the anime. I remember that there were already a few episodes available when I started the anime. And then I had to watch all the episodes that were available because I was so hooked. I really love the dynamic of Maomao and Jinshi. It's really refreshing to see that not every story has the female character immediately crushing on the male and everything is always portrayed so lovingly. I think Maomao also reacts so negatively to Jinshi because she grew up in the brothel. And that's where she learned since childhood how men behave and how dangerous they can be. And that's why she tries to be as disparaging as possible so that she doesn't draw attention to herself. Because she knows where that can lead. Of course, I don't want to imply that Jinshi would do something like that. He can't even do it because he lacks a "certain part". But I think it's very cool to see that Maomao is very careful about how she deals with men. I think all her love goes to her medicine and drugs. You could see that she loves tasting food that could probably contain poison. Any other person would have had the panic of their life when they found out what they were supposed to do. And Maomao is completely thrilled and very happy about it. I think she's a total likeably written character who is easy to sympathize with and very endearing. I love the comic-like depictions of her as a cat or as other animals. By the way, Maomao is 17 years old, so in her late teens. The thing about this anime is that you never really find out what the plot is exactly. The anime simply shows Maomao's life in the emperor's palace and the tasks she faces and how she solves them. There are of course big surprises and plot twists, but they are very unpredictable but still well written. This episode also introduced one of my favorite characters. Gaoshun is simply one of the best male characters in this anime. He just gives off such worried daddy vibes. You always have to watch out for Jinshi and see the games he plays with other people. And I think he's already pretty desperate. That's why I like Gaoshun so much, because his voice actor is Diavolo from Jojo and you know how much I love Diavolo as a character. And when I hear his voice actor speaking him, I love the character a hundred times more. You'll definitely find out what the ghost-like character is all about next episode. I can make one thing clear, nothing magical will happen in the anime. It's all historical and not fantasy-like. That's also the reason why I liked it a bit more than Frieren, because everything was always kept realistic and not always based on magic. Instead the characters in this anime have to use their brains and solve problems with their own abilities.

I neglected to say this last time but you asked the last time an anime cold opened the theme for episode 1: it was Frieren. :P Anyway, Maomao has been promoted partially because she’s made herself known to the higher-ups, particularly Jinshi - and it’s also because Gyokuyou only has a few ladies-in-waiting. She’s very reluctant to take on people she doesn’t know or trust, which is reasonable, but her rival has over twice as many of them, and Jinshi views it as a problem that Maomao can help to correct. Maomao has been hired as the taste tester for Gyokuyou - basically she has to taste everything the concubine will consume before it goes to her. The other girls look sympathetic because the last taste tester suffered nerve damage and still hasn’t been able to regain movement of her arms or her legs. The taster’s life is in the balance because they can afford to lose that person. Of course, Maomao is no stranger to poisons herself as an apothecary, and as it turns out she’s done far worse things to herself while experimenting. It also seems she’s got very a cute taste and smell. She even passes the hidden test Jinshi prepares for her. You know, his “charm” is working on the other girls, but on her it seems to have the reverse effect… Speaking of that, Jinshi presents some food offerings to her, some kind of bun, and Maomao pulls one apart and detects the aphrodisiac inside immediately. If you recall, later, Jinshi is approached by a concubine whom the emperor hasn’t visited. I think it’s safe to say this might be the culprit. But the women are supposed to be exclusive to the emperor, and Jinshi is also there as a bit of a test. I think she’s probably going to lose her standing, in fact it’s probably a safe bet. Maomao was sold off by her kidnappers, who get a cut of her earnings - she’s basically working off her debt, very similar to the situation we dealt with in Vinland Saga - but a cut of her funding goes to the people who sold her. The head lady in waiting breaking the vase is basically handing Maomao a loophole. If she takes that expense out of her “paycheck” that’s goi g to her family, then the kidnappers aren’t going to get nearly as big a cut either, and meanwhile she gives her a new salary that she can control. It’s sneaky but clever, and was done for her benefit. Jinshi wants to know why the soldiers were poisoned, and the answer is pretty simple, they were being careless and ignorant about what they used. It’s a good thing Maomao stepped in, otherwise the soldiers may have wiped out an entire village as punishment. So, what Maomao is making is actually chocolate - she’s just putting the aphrodisiac into it - however, it should be noted the other girls just went for the “safe” chocolate but since they weren’t used to it, it had some… unexpected effects. Gyokuyou pretty much is getting her own entertainment first watching Jinshi fail to get Maomao to try an aphrodisiac and later to resist his “charming personality” - but when she hears how powerful the new concoction is - she’s like… uh… hang on, is that even possible!? Better hope she takes Maomao’s advice and only brings it out when she’s visited by the Emperor. Jinshi seems to like that Maomao isn’t being taken in by his charms… here comes the guys always want the one they can’t get trope… 😅 We’ll deal with more of this later, in the meantime, find someone who looks at you the way Maomao looks at poison…. 👀 Housekeeping questions for you off topic: I admit was a little surprised you made us vote on Slime a second time, when it already got through the process once already, so do you think you’ll get back to it on your own at some point since you already began it? And second, I assume you’re doing 2 episodes of this a week, so between this, Gotchard and MHA, do you want to be uploading 3 episodes on one day for the schedule and just 1 on another like this week went or would it be easier to slide Gotchard and MHA together one one of the days so it’s 2 posts per day in terms of uploading time for you? Just thinking about how much per day you’d like to do. Keep in mind, this season of AD is done for now, so it’s readily available and you won’t need to wait for a new episode to post, like the other two. :) Regarding the category to put this anime in: call it a distant cousin to Vinland Saga, that’s probably best. A lot of the stories are going to be shorter arcs underneath an overarching plot, Frieren acted in kind of a similar vein, if you want an idea how the story flow is going to be. Well, there’s three reactions today, so I have one more to go. The song titles for the opening and ending did appear but in Japanese characters so here: Opening: Hana ni Natte by Ryokuoushoku Shaka Ending: Aikotoba by AiNA THE END iTunes shopping again? 👀

Yea I can’t help but compare to Frieren cuz obviously but it has a lot of different aspects to it as well. They’re definitely setting up something with Jinshi and Maomao. Idk what exactly but definitely something. I’m also curious to learn some stuff watching this series. The first thing is does her father at least know. Since paper and being able to write daily is a luxury I assume no. She was definitely aware of how this all works so it seems typical. It may be just because of her knowledge but I’m glad people are gravitating towards her. 🐷 She isn’t the average girl fawning over the usual stuff which I like. It’s setting her apart from the rest. It’s really entertaining to watch. Gah! What was that at the end? I was not expecting that. Boo 👻

Hi Spadeas! :) Omg, I can totally see the cat vibes! I love how excited she gets haha. OHHHHHH gotcha, I didn't realize "family" meant the kidnappers!!! Oh shoot! What, we're gonna get more on her past?! Dang! I figured her knowledge of poisons came from her upbringing, but it sounds like there might be more to it. I can see how the brothel girls really influenced her growing up too. Hahah it's cat and mouse with these two, only Jinshi is the cat in this instance! I know how much you love this VA and I can see why! Hahah wow sounds like we'll get some interesting dialogue down the road! I can't wait for more!

kamenriderhime

I can see why you had to binge watch! I love their dynamic too. I can totally see where Maomao is coming from! Right, Jinshi's literally not capable of that, but still! Omg, I love how Maomao is the one person who is just so thrilled to get to taste poison haha! She's so endearing! thanks for the age info! Oh that's interesting about the storytelling! I know how much you love Gaoshun and I can't wait to see more of him! Seems like Jinshi is quite the charmer and game player. OMG I love that Gaoshun also has the same VA as Diavolo!! I actually really love that this anime is so grounded in non-magical stuff. It's sort of a twist considering there's some kind of fantasy or supernatural element in almost every single anime I watch!!!

kamenriderhime

Yeah that's how I felt!! Ok it def sounds like there's gonna be a Jinshi/Maomao thing! I know, I'm happy people are giving her love and attention! She definitely has an attitude and demeanor that sets her apart. OMG right?! What a way to leave us!!

kamenriderhime

Hahaha no kidding, Frieren did that too?! I forgot :P Thanks for clarifying everything that happened in this ep. The taste tester is a super dangerous job but Maomao isn't sweating it. Also yeah, the charm is not working on her! Ok, I had a feeling the vase thing was that person's way of helping her, but now I know for sure! Yeah the reason for the poisoning was kinda dumb on their part, and if Maomao hadn't stepped in, the blame would've gotten really out of hand. I can see how this situation is very entertaining lol, and yeah, considering the circumstances, I'm sure it would be beneficial if she did bring it out around the Emperor. Oh yeah, the whole unattainable thing is in full swing here! HAHAHAHA anyone would be lucky to have someone look at them the way Maomao looks at poison!!! Thanks for the suggestions on housekeeping and for the song info!

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Part of Maomao's pay goes to her kidnappers not her actual family. The head lady in waiting dropped that jug so instead of yhem getting money they will get a bill.

kamenriderhime

Thanks for clarifying, someone mentioned that and it makes sense! I wasn't quite sure what they were getting at.
