After reading up on the intricacies of renpy character code, I took my previously single-image character graphics, and started breaking them up into layers. "Nude" body blank, various eyebrow expressions, various eye expressions, various mouths.... and of course, various outfits (including various naughty bits). 

The end result of this is that I can now program different outfits and facial expressions in, based on a set of small graphical elements, rather than needing a full-body character image for each one. This will save on a lot of art crunching, and also a load of disk space once this thing is finally ready to be packed up and posted as ready-to-run.
