One week before trip I began preparing for it. I bought tickets and packed all my stuff. I had bought tickets for the night-long trip so it wasn't so hot. As I didn't know how long I would stay in Europe, I packed a variety of things. I planned to visit France and Spain to explore old castles. That's why I took my camping stuff like a sleeping bag, a inflatable mattress and a tent. All in all, my backpack was very heavy. I had a good mind to travel. I wanted to see something new and explore unknown cities. I had only 150 euro, which I thought was enough money to travel across Europe. I came at the coach station and got on my bus. The first city was Minsk in Belarus. This is not far from Kiyv, so you can get there by bus. To be honest, I don't like to travel by bus because it's very inconvenient. I've never seen buses with toilets in CIS. I don't get how people can travel by bus longer than a day. Only if you don't have any other options. I was lucky and I could take 2 seats. I was listening to the music and enjoying the views of the city from the window. There were not a lot of people on the bus, apparently few people travel from Kyiv to Belarus. A couple of hours later I got to the border. I took my baggage and went to the border monitoring. The insistent Belarusians asked me where, why, with who I was going to stay in Belarus, but then eventually let me pass. I was worrying about my baggage a bit as I was bringing my barlow knife with me, the officers could take it away. I was checked by an X-ray and said to go back to the bus and to take my seat. The rest of the way wasn't very long, it was already morning and I had no Internet connection. I could lie down on 2 seats but it still was too uncomfortable to sleep. When I was approaching the city at 7AM, I immediately began looking for a place with WiFi on my offline map. The bus stopped near a shopping center, I got off the bus and decided to go inside the store. By the time I came to the door I had realised the center was closed so early in the morning. I completely forgot it was too early and nothing was working. According to the map, I was far from the center of the city. I decided to get there as fast as possible to go to McDonald's and contact my friend, who I was going to stay with. I found the nearest metro station and headed to the center. When I entered the station I was asked to go to the special room with an X-ray. In the Minsk metro all suspicious people or people with big backpacks are asked to go to the security room. It's the main rule of the metro in Minsk. According to the locals, someone put a pyrotechnical device under one of the benches and left. Nothing exploded but there were fireworks right on the station. By security cameras the police found people, who did it, and punished them. Since then, all the benches have been bottomless and all the visitors have been being checked at the entrance. I was allowed to enter the metro, I bought a ticket and began looking for the right distance to go. At first I couldn't understand where I was but it found out, I was at the terminal station and I could get on the only one train. As usual, people were looking suspiciously at me and my big backpack, I've already got used to it. I came to the city center, found McDonald's, my friend came, we went to his place together. Finally, I could leave my stuff here and have a rest. I wanted to do nothing but to sleep. That's how I fell asleep.
2 hours later I woke up and chatted all my friends from Minsk who climbed roofs here. I agreed to meet someone in the afternoon, but now my friend and I were leaving home to visit an old roof in the center. I was 100 percent sure that the roof was opened. To my mind, the lock has been broken so many times that even citizens stopped struggling with it. In Belarus a roof is a public place and if anyone sees you and calls the police, they won't be able to do anything. But there are such rules as "you are not allowed to drink alcohol in public places" or "you are not allowed to swear in public places" if you swear at the police. The building is situated in the center and the city view is just incredible here. I climbed up the top of the building and enjoyed the picturesque scenery. My friend asked me not to show myself too much at the end of the roof as I could scare people in the street. I wasn't near the end of the roof for long, I appeared there only to film something, the rest of the time I was just chilling and enjoying the experience. 15-20 minutes later while I was filming a video I noticed a fire or rescue truck. When I looked at the truck, the driver saw me. He immedeately got into the truck and drove straight ahead the building. I thought they would drive to the entrance of this block of flats. I told my friend about the fire truck and wanted to leave as soon as possible. I'm not afraid of getting caught, I'm afraid of getting caught in Belarus. I didn't know what to expect from the Belarusian police, that's why I did my best to prevent meeting them at all. My friend knew several units from the roof. We decided to go to the opposite side of the building not to get caught. We descended the stairs and went outside, there was no fire truck. It was very weird cause where else it would drive exept here? We walked around the building to get to the main stret of the city and saw this truck there. I pretended I didn't know the car but the firemen didn't notice us either. I still don't know why they came there.
I didn't eat all day so I decided to go to the shopping center to grab some fastfood. I know, it's super unhealthy but it's also super cheap.
I didn't want to spend much money on food, sometimes I had to eat fastfood.
My friend had some plans and left. For now I'd like to have a walk around the city. As it's a week-day, there a few people in the streets and I can enjoy the atmosphere of the city. To be honest, I'm from Ukraine and I see the exact same advirtisements, architecture, language and people. I couldn't see the difference between Kyiv and Minsk exept there are fewer high buildings here. It looks like everything was built in the Soviet Union and still remains. New blocks of flats are being built only in a few parts of the city and the new ones look just same so it's difficult to find out which is new and which one is old. When I was walking, another friend contacted me and we met. It was time to explore new roofs. This time the way to the roof was closed and we had to get through a very narrow hole. There were only stairs in the entire building and the hole was above 9 floors of abyss. I tried to get through the hole first and get trapped suprisingly. My hips couldn't go through. I began getting out but I had to be very careful because I didn't want to fall. I got out and watched mt friend getting through the hole. After he did it successfully, I gave him all my stuff and it was my turn. I couldn't do this for the first time as I was in a wrong position. I could hardly do this. When I came to the roof I wasn't suprised. Most of the houses were as high as this one but there was a extra floor here to look around. I had already filmed my video and was ready to leave, my friend offered to climb one of the constructions. There were several concrete towers on the roof, they were 5-7 meters high. By the time I had come to the tower, my friend was aleady on the top of it. I began climbing and found out it wasn't as easy as it seemed to be. The construction was old and all of a sudden everything could collapse. I got to the top of the tower, the view was much better than just from the roof. I could look around carefully and I saw a high crane in the distance. I felt curious to know how high it was and how difficult it was to climb it. I told my friend about the idea to go there and check.
We got out of the roof and went to the metro station. I saw the USSR state emblem, which was a very weird thing for the tourists, even for me. Because in most SIC countries these emblems have been already removed. As it was a work-day the crane was supposed to be used. On our way to the construction site I was thinking of how to climb this crane. If it was used it would be impossible to climb, but if it wasn't used we had a chance. The closer we was getting to the project site, the more nervous I felt. When I saw the crane I was literally amazed. It was the highest crane in the city. The apartment building had more than 30 floors erected with the help of this crane, and the crane itself was twice as high as the building. I got closer and looked at the crane. It wasn't used which didn't mean there was no worker in cabin on the top, but we could try to climb it. We got on the territory through the opened gates without any security. I ran to one of the buildings to look around and be sure there was nobody nearby. My friend said we'd better go to another house with the stairs inside and we started looking for the entrance. After 10 minutes of running around the site we found the sought-for building and the sought-for entrance. I was doing my best to be as quite as possible. We got to the 25th floor and went to the side of the house where the flats were situated. As there were crane feet, one of them was on the 25th floor. We had to use them to climb the crane. The distance between the building and the crane was about 15-20 meters. When I saw my friend walking straight on the foot I was amazed. Then it was my turn to do this trick. I got on the foot and found out I couldn't stand. I hadn't trained my balance for a long time so I had to move on my hands and knees. It took me a little while but I finally was on the other side. When I was on the crane I felt more confident and began climbing up. Nobody had noticed us yet. I was almost on the top of the crane when a worker saw me from the balcony. When he noticed I was looking at him as well, he hid himself. From the top I saw the beautify of the city. It was actually the highest spot in the entire city. My friend wanted to get on the crane boom but there were many workers below us. I was sure that if we cimbed the boom we wouldn't be able to escape at all. I took a couple of pictures and began descending. What a pity we couldn't spend much time here! But it was time to leave. I was trying to descend as quickly as I could. We got to that crane foot, this time I wasn't as scared as I had been for the first time. Holding the crane I
stood up and began walking. I was trying not to look down and striding confidently. It's not as difficult as it sounds, however, it's pretty scary. Got the adrenalin going we began running down the stairs. There were balconies on each floor and workers could see us running and they knew where exactly we were. I had got an idea and started jumping from stairs to stairs not to show yourselves. So we had some chances to escape. When we got to the ground floor and was thinking of what we could do, I knew the workers would wait for us to go outside. I ran through the balcony on the 2nd floor and got into the building. I could see no workers which made me even more nervous. I was running around the building and looking for ways to escape, I found a window on the opposide side of the block of flats. I looked out of the window and figured out it was impossible. It was about 6 meters above the ground and it wasn't sand, it was pure asphalt. I thought that if I jumped I would break my leg, and ran to find something else. I was running in the hall when 2 security guards rushed in and shouted: "Where are you running?!" There was no time to think so I tried to use my only chance and ran downstairs. I wasn't lucky. A worker was waiting for me. After a while all the workers and guards were there. They seized us and led towards the gates. The police had already arrived. While we were going to the guard box we were being interrogated. I was very scared to say that I was from a foreign country because I didn't know what would happen to me. The guard asked us to enter the box one at a time. When I came there, a guard and a policeman were waiting for me. I didn't want to tell them my real name but I didn't bring the passport with me either. The fact I was from another country was good and bad for me at the same time. My excuse "I'm a foreign and I came to your country to enjoy the views" was pretty good sometimes, but it could end very bad for me. I asked the guard to leave me alone with the policeman. The guard didn't want to leave us. I said: "I kindly ask you to leave us alone. Should ask you in another way?" I wanted to talk to the policeman in private. He understood, I would tell him nothing if the guard was there so he asked him to go away. I told the policeman the truth, that I had come from another country and about my job. I
apologized for bothering them and asked what I was ought to do. I gave the policeman my personal information and I was ready to pay a fine. The policeman asked me to wait until he talked to the guard. When I went outside the guard asked me to delete the video I had filmed, but I had been able pull the SD-card out of the camera before. When I turned the camera on I tried to hide the screen from them not to show there was no SD in camera. The guard didn't notice it, I opened the settings and pressed "delete all" Then I took my phone, said: "To avoid any problems I'll also delete everything from my phone" and deleted the GoPro app, explaining that all the files were in the app. I was believed and said to get into the car. When we drove away from the construction site he said: "Oh, what a mess you did! Now you delete everything from your SD-card and we get you to a bus stop, otherwise we'll take you to the police station and detain you" I pretended to be a fool and said that when I had been in the building I put the card in my phone and had deleted everything. I was fined and let go away. I calmly went home. I went to bed thinking of what would happen to me in this trip.
