there is an extra episode but it only recaps season 1 + the girls go swimming but it isnt important. the movie ordinal scale comes after season 2 and the 2 progressive movies you can watch whenever you want because it shows what happened during the time skip from episode 1-3

Raven Dyer

Your expressions this episode were S tier!

For a chronological order: SAO -> Exta Edition (not necessary for plot) -> SAO 2 -> Ordinal Scale Movie (technology introduced in the movie is expanded on in the next season) -> SAO Alicization -> SAO Alicization: War of Underworld. SAO Alternative: GGO and SAO Progressive are their own things. GGO is a side story that doesn't relate to the main story at all and only makes minor references to Kirito and the Gang. SAO Progressive is a retelling of the events of the first arc of SAO through a different PoV.

U won't have to watch any OVA's or movies until after season 2. So you're good for a while to just watch the anime.

Renaud Nadeau

No OVA's Movie after season 2 before 3

This show covers some really crazy stuff. I can't wait to see you react to the Mothers Rosario arc.

Nick is Rad

Neel's face when he saw what kind of villain we were really dealing with here was priceless. There's your YT thumbnail right there. 😂

Саша Одинец

Technically, SAOP isn't a retelling, it's just a second iteration of adaptation of the novels, that partially overlaps with what was already adapted before :) If we do not count the anime-original-character stuff - it's a lot of newly adapted material that wasn't shown before.

Imagine the books went through all that and possibly more and still have a proud 13&up on every cover xD At least in US and Russia, not sure about Japan There's something poetic about Kayaba coming to rescue in a role of literal devil of the crossroads that comes at moment of desperation to propose a deal to the character (in the book, Kirito even screams in his mind that he would sell his soul if it means he can save Asuna from Sugou, and right after that is when Kayaba starts to speak). Who knows what may come out of it eventually if the time comes to pay the price of that deal What Asuna's father did is baaad, and the series is criticizing arranged marriages by this, but I wouldn't say it was *as* bad as it may look right now. I mean - even without this, it pretty much all would've been the same. Sugou wouldn't hold Asuna separately because he awaits to get her father's money but because he personally knows her anyway. And he's not literally marrying her but on paper is being adopted into her family, as he said in the first episode of the arc. For the most part what it did is to push Kirito into the ALO at highest speed possible (I mean, he would go anyway because of Agil's screenshot, but wouldn't be as hard pressed to do it before end of the week) - so in a way, Asuna's father for being such a bad judge of character is the one who helped to save her in time...

Real Kayaba died almost right after completion of Aincrad, but before own death he kinda transferred his mind into virtual reality. It was risky, because technology was not tested, but as we can see he succeeded, at least to some degree. The Seed that he gave to Kirito is a set of tools for game developers, software, etc. If you keep it - you give virtual reality another chance, after 2 big scandals as you mentioned yourself

you can immediately start season 2 of SAO with no problems if you would like. there's an extra movie (literally called SAO extra edition) which is 80% a recap with lots of fanservice. it does contain tiny bits of new information about a certain character, and there's a fun little side story which takes the last 20% of the movie, however I believe it's not important and most people end up skipping the movie anyway. but if you do decide to watch the it, it takes place BEFORE season 2. after season 2 you just do the (SAO ordinal scale) movie and then continue with Season 3 and Season 4. and that's the main series as of right now. there's more to come since SAO hasn't ended but for now that's it. there's other stuff too but these are just extras : a spinoff made by a different writer, called GGO alternative. I never watched it but it's disconnected from the main story iirc. and then you get SAO progressive; a series of movies that are STILL currently airing, and they aim to fill the gaps of what happened in the original SAO game, and expand on the whole concept. same characters, same writer, more details and depth, and better animation and music basically.

Iruzu

I'm defending Asuna's dad here. In his perspective, Kayaba may be the one who's holding the 300 (+asuna) hostage and Sugou is the one keeping those people alive while "figuring out how to get them out". You can actually see (however subtle) Asuna's dad not liking the marriage either and maybe Sugou made a deal to 'Prioritize' Asuna in return of marriage, or he just outright threatened him.

Ryuuji Gremory

What her dad doesn't like is the fact that his daughter is still in a coma and showing no sings of waking up, that marriage is in the context of "she might never wake up and need someone to take care of her for the rest of her life", so it's not like it's something he could be happy about, but he simply has no clue about Sugou's true nature. He doesn't know that Asuna and her brother have hated Sugou for ever either, since they never came forward with it, because they believed, that with how masterfully Sugou hid his true nature in front of their parents, their accusations wouldn't stick. In the eyes of Asuna's father Sugou and Asuna had a good relationship and everything was smooth sailing to eventually have Sugou marry her and become part of the family, until the SAO incident.

Antoine Jones

well you forgot one thing about Progressive... Asuna is the main character/focus not Kirito.. so its basically retelling season 1 from Asuna;s perspective

Antoine Jones

"there should be no reason why we make a third one right?" Soooo what would you guess the other seasons would be about then? lol

This episode, to me, changed the way I saw Kayaba. At first, I did see him as nothing more than a mad scientist creating a death game for his own entertainment. But now, I can kinda understand him better. He created SAO so that he could live in a world completely different of our own. Sure, he had no need to trap people inside too. But nonetheless, he still lived in that world alongside them. That's one of the main differences shown here between him and Sugou. Sugou chose to stay on top of his tree, looking down on others and never interacting with them. He only saw Alfheim as a game and a lab for his twisted experiments. That's why he was unable to conceive that the physical limits of that world could be beaten, and why he flipped out where Kayaba accepted defeat. There's a series of SAO video games that were made (under supervision of the actual creator of SAO, so while the story deviates from the original plot, it still follows the same logic), and the first instalment delves a bit deeper into his mindset. To Sugou, the only thing that matters in games is stats and equipment. To him, as long as your stats are above your opponent's, you're sure to win. He doesn't account the fact that VRMMOs require experience, acquired through battle and through interacting with others. To get back to Kayaba, I think he chose to help Kirito because Sugou was perverting his creation, and that's exactly what Kirito felt as well. The goal of the full-dive system was never to find a way to control or change the human mind. It was to allow people to experience a different life in a way that has never been done before. Of course, it needs to be regulated and monitored to ensure that nobody takes advantage of that technology, but it has so much potential that you can't just throw it all in the trash as soon as someone goes too far with it. I see Kayaba more as a misguided genius, someone who gave up on the real world, but eventually chose to share his masterpiece with everyone. And let's be honest, compared to Sugou, he's a way better person.
